Sounds like a hammered dulcimer... try looking up Gypsy music (between the depiction of mama Lazarou, and the "language" they speak, looks to me that LOG is mocking Roma culture)

Papa Lazarou's one of my favourite characters, along with Pop the repulsive Greek father...It's really hard to do horrible-funny; LOG always manage it. I couldn't sleep after the Herr Lipp episode when he buried Justin. It was the snorkel sticking out of the ground with the air gauge going up and down that did it! They do brilliant characters - Edward and Tubs, Hilary Briss, the Dentons - Auntie Val naked will haunt me forever!- that are genuinely disturbing as well as creepily funny.
