What a wonderful refuge for parrots that have had bad homes!!!I I just wish there would be a low passed to stop breeding and the sale of parrots in pet stores. RESCUE INSTEAD!
Lukeschedel - Regardless of wether you are referring to the rescue, please report the trappers to local wildlife authorities, if that fails, then go to the press. These are wild birds, as you said, this is wrong. Who cares about price, these are the lives of wild animals... unless I missed something.
Lukeschedel seems to have MISSED THE POINT completely! The pet trade is a multi-billion dollar industry producing thousands of parrots each year dooming them to a solitary, unhealthy life nothing like they deserve. Please educate yourself more and think about it. Refuges like this are making valiant efforts to clean up after this awful mess.
YOU MISSED THE ENTIRE POINT! The pet trade produces thousands of parrots each year to live in solitary captivity as "Pets." That's the crime. Refuges are their small chance at some sort of "parrot life." Think about it and educate yourself please.
Keep up the good work - I just hope more people will watch this and realize that taking on a parrot is a long term commitment and not something that should be done lightly.
On another note :) what is the backing track ? My birds love it.............
i just adopted a b&g macaw who was being teased and really missed treated.. i had him for a month now and there is a huge noticeable change in him.. i wanted to tell u guys i really respect and admire what u guys are doing here.. keep it up guys.
I visited the refuge yesterday. I love this place and they do fantastic work. Many of their birds are disabled and they receive such wonderful care. We took out a membership last year and we enjoyed a long chat with Wendy. Got to renew that family membership! A good deal for $100.
Parrots need constant companionship, varied activities and constant intellectual stimulation - searching for food, things to tear apart to make nests, mates and friends for grooming and reproduction etc. You cannot spay/neuter a bird so they will become sexually active and even aggressive around 8 years of age. It is not unusual for a 10 year old bird to have been passed through three or more homes plus the breeders and pet store by the time they get to the refuge.
Because they normally spend 10 months with the parents in the wild, and then bond with a flock/mate for life, this causes tremendous emotional trauma to the bird. Many never recover. At the refuge most do regain some sense of how to be a natural bird again and even though they still like human attention, they have their permanent flock at the refuge and are as well off there as possible.
By the way, no, they can never be returned to the wild for many reasons.
I have 12 Parrots, most came from bad situations and I cry evertime I see the terrible things humans have done to these beautiful creatures. It makes me so angry that there is not more being done to breeders.
Thank God for people like you. You're all wonderful, amazing people with a gift. It's touching to see these incredible birds given a second chance in life-all because of you. Thank you so much for caring the wat you do x x Head scratches for all the birds!!!
Hey, what an awesome place for birds! So cool! I actually live north of Sidney, maybe this would be a good day trip or something. On that note, are tours by donation, or are there set admission prices?

Thanks for helping these exploited birds.
People who breed parrots need to get out of the business, because too many parrots pluck and are not well adapted to life in a cage.
Really make captive parrot breeding illegal already.
