  • If I ever had to light a fire with book matches I hope I'll be in my yard.

    Because they suck.

Otherwise, a good kit. Fatwood & jute twine are great. But I'd honestly rather have a small firesteel than a book of matches.

  • When you consider what's being used here, it makes a lot of sense. You have fatwood, cottonball, jute twine infused with parafin, and part of a paper towel roll, with shredded paper stuffed inside and covered with wax, plus that paper towel thing underneath it all. All of it combined into one kit, with a burn time of over 20 minutes. I think it's a good idea. You could probably assemble your own, but depending upon the price, it might be worth buying.

  • @dunfamalb I just looked on the Duluth Pack website, and the kit is $10.00. It also comes with a plastic bag to store any unused items, and a book of matches. Not all the items have to used at once, since you could start a fire with only one or two of the components pretty easily. But in case of emergency, wet conditions, etc., it appears you could burn the whole thing and be certain of getting a fire going quickly. I still like it.

  • no good if its windy
