Port2344chester, yea I am from Soundview Projects, the south bronx in NYC! Started spinning in 78 (I was 16). Grew up in a house full of music, plus the fact that I was down with Africa Bambatta, Jazzy Jay & dj Red Alert, I listened to all types of music, but r&b was my 1st love. Back in those days, a dj "broke" new music. When I heard this, Rising to the top by Keni Burke, Curious by midnight star, & no one was really playing them, I played songs that I could feel! Hot!
Yes, this is my sh***t! I picked up this album for the radio hit "Bon Bon Vie", but while listening to the whole album, I fell in love with this song! I started playing this in soundview house parties, block parties b/4 anybody knew what it was! Got classic hip hop tapes from early 80's with this song on them b/4 Jazzy 5 would perform...CLASSIC R&B!
Msredhoney720... sharing my love to you also... cant keep this rare yet classic tune to myself... i share & its so nice to see that you are feelin the same style oldies like myself... Awesome track right ....Peace XOXO 1 LOVE
Yo uncle rubin man... here is one of your old school joints. Give me a few seconds & i will return the favor bump up the volume so you can enjoy the sounds of some old school classics. I owe you that much for your knowledge of soulful jazz funk boogie latin tunes which you schooled me on as a kid. I love you for that man... Peace & one love to the old school ... we all need tunes like this during bad times "RECESSION BIG BROTHER"
Must show my love to you & the old school... Ahhh man i'm jammin hear in my house... with the volume up & just kickin back... glad to see that you like this jammm... off the charts right Tina.... haha
Played this at parties in the eighties in London then again as Rare groove in the late nineties. Still a wicked cut. Gets the ladies up the same way Stephanie Mills "Keep Away Girls" did/does. Great post.
I agree with you, funkymusak! until I saw this ,I thought Fat Larry's Band's was the only version. But being from Philly, naturally I like that version.
This is the cool out jam on sunny summer day. I loved this tune. I understand TS Monk's sister and his girlfriend who were the vocalists in the group passed away. RIP sisters, this was quality work.
Oh Wow !!!!!!!!!! THE MEMORIES that this song conjures up! Living in the dorm at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. Everybody had a top of line stereo system. Jammin this and other songs like (I thought it was you by Herbie...Searchin to find the One by Unlimited Touch....oh man back when music was simple and pure!)
Oh God...THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS ONE. I haven't heard this song in years. My mother use to play "Bon Bon Vie" to death from this album, but this was my cut right here. Now this right here is what soul music should sound like!
1980s, he had formed his eponymous band, which featured him on lead vocals and drums. The group's début album, 1980's House of Music featured several hits that placed on the Billboard R&B chart, including "Bon Bon Vie (Gimme the Good Life)" and "Candidate for Love." The band went on to release two more albums throughout the early 1980s, though singles released from these albums did not fare as well as those on the début.
Their first single (recorded at the Hit Factory Studio's in New York City) , 'Bon Bon Vie', made the R & B Top 20 and hit the UK charts, as did the follow-up 'Candidate For Love', both.Tagedy hit the group in 1983 when both Boo Boo and Yvonne (women on album cover) died from breast cancer within a year of each other
1-18-12: Good post. This is a forgotten gem from their first LP.

I wouldn't call this "rare" exactly - their first album was a massive hit for them when new.
