@foremanblessed safe(r) than at the shore. The wave only breaks (and becomes massive) as the depth of the water decreases towards the shore. Out in the ocean, the wave isn't too tall at all . . . in this video it's big(ish), but it would get much bigger as the depth of the water decreases...

Yes, actually this is a tsunami that's headed for Japan. You definitely would see a tsunami on the open sea as they are the shockwaves produced from tectonic plates shifting, and they don't just appear out of nowhere. The closer it gets to shore, the faster it gets due to water depth and friction with the seabed. In the video it is pretty fast, but it's so widely spread that it only seems sluggish.

It's the other way round: The deeper the water ist, the faster the Tsunami. In the open sea the speed is about 500 mph. And the reason why you can't see (or even feel it) is because the wave reaches to the ground (waves caused by weather don't reach very deep)...when it gets to the shore it becomes slower and noticeable. The wave in the clip has to be some kind of freak wave.

Lucky for them that they were on the water in deep water. Had they been nearer to the coast they'd have been swept inland and would have probably died. I'll never forget the images of a fishing vessel trying to make it over the tsunami, only to see black smoke from its engine as the engine died. Anyone know what happened to that vessel?
