Do you know why the South Koreans want to change the name of "Sea of Japan" ?

Among maps published in the 19th Century, 82.4% or 1059 map pages used the term "Sea of Japan" or "Japan Sea". Specifically, there were 563 maps published in the 19th century during Japan's isolation policy up until 1860, and 74% of 417 pieces used the term "Sea of Japan". These facts shows the validity of Japan's argument that the name "Sea of Japan" had been standardized in Europe and the U.S.A since 19th century, when Japan, under its isolation policy, could exert no international influence.
No, No, Sea of Japan is correct. Do you know the truth of "East Sea"? Because the name is not for the sea, it is the name of LAND, lol. Yes, Japan has the same name, that is 東海(East sea), which is located to the east of Japan, lol. Korean should understand the meaning of the name

You also believe that koreans are the center of the world since you want to change the name Sea of Japan to East Sea. Is the east sea east of Japan? No. Is it the east sea for Russia? No. We might as well call the gulf of mexico, southern gulf of the United States of America. Yeah? Yeah.
Most Japanese people don't care what you koreans call the sea or even know that you call it the East Sea (of Korea).
"East Sea" is distorted claims only by Korean. Sea of Japan is defacto standard on the international geographical name. Although around 1740-1770, sea of Korea was increased in some maps ,but after La Perouse and Krusenstern's explorer on Sea of Japan late of 18century and early 19century, "Sea of Japan" global standard had been establsitherd. On the other hand, Sea of Korea is disappear and the "Korea" name is succeed to Detroit de COree(Strait of Korea) and Brounghton Bay=Korean Sea(or Gulf)
Korean distorted to claims it is "Oriental sea or Mer du Orientale" is (Korea) East sea. But"Oriental Sea/Ocean" is not confirmed concept before La Peoruse and it were many places named on Pacific ocean, sea of Japan, or East of Kamchakka. Anyway, after La Perouse and Krusestern's discovery expedition, oriental sea did extinct and it is change to Pacific Ocean and Sea of Japan. Finally "TungHai or Oriental Sea had established as "China East Sea"
China East Sea/Oriental Sea means it is east of China. At the era China had Hegemony in East Asia. the name of "Sea of Japan means Japan Islet separates Pacific ocean and Sea of Japan. Korean Peninsula separates China Eastern Sea and Sea of Japan so we call it "Korea Strait"(Detroit de Coree9
Let's decide it by chinese map! Why China? Because the time of the period when the name of the sea determined, Korea was a tribute state of China all the time. Let's see the chinese map! Oooooops, Sea of Japan!
I think japanese should teach korean a lesson. Who can image what will happen in the future. the stupid person maybe command china to name the yellow sea as west sea...

i cant believe this. Even Japanes know sea of Japan belongs to Korea. i really dont understand how they keep insisting that east sea belongs to japan. Of course they are much stronger than Korea but it is ridiculous.
when they colonized Korea, they changed all Korea's map and stole Korea's culture and countless relics. It is really sad.
They also changed Korea's real name. actually It is Corea, not Korea. But Japan did not like that the letter "C" is ahead of "J" so they changed it.
"Korean cyber terrorist VANK" sends a enormous amount of [spam Emails] all over the world like as "Change the name of the [Sea of Japan] into [Tonhe!] "
"Sea of Japan" this name is right geographicaly, historically too,
& this name is the decision of the United Nations.
Back when Portugiese sailors "discovered Japan" they invited Japan into the IHO to start naming Oceans. Japan gave the name Sea of Japan into the Pacific Ocean. He named the Sea west of Japan the Sea of Japan. But curiously, why the west sea of japan. Japan = Sun origin, then shouldn't the East of Japan be Sea of Japan? Europe already called the water mass the Pacific Ocean, so Japan took the cowards way out by naming its west part Sea of Japan.
Yellow Sea is West Sea and the sea of Japan is East Sea??? When did korea get to be big to insist like this??? korea is the central in asia??? don't make me laugh, fuckorean!!!
First off, true that if the Japanese archipelago wasn't in the way, the area would be called the Pacific Ocean, but Ancient Japan makers did in fact make a map using Dong Hae for what is no Sea of Japan, and the Pacific Ocean as Sea of Japan. Even-though Japan blocks it, Both Korea and Japan "shares" the Ocean area.
"Widely known things are not always right." Spaceships are exploring the universe to correct things wrongly informed. <b>Mistaken things should be corrected.</b> You should not make the same mistakes made by the people in medieval times.
That would be a workable argument if this were a question of reason. It is not a contest of reason, it is a question of custom and nationalistic emotion. There is no "right" or "wrong" here, so by definition there is no "right" answer. It's simply a few Korean nationalists rising contempt of the Japanese. Why should gaijin/gweilo change our minds about anything?
In the medieval times, ancient European people thought the earth is just flat. Although some thought it shapes sphere, they hardly thought "it revolves around the sun." Galileo was ridiculed and blatantly biased when he defended heliocentrism and published a book 'Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems' about the theory. Columbus himself regarded the land he had landed in 1492 as Asia and the people there as Indians til the day he died.
Recently Encyclopaedia Britannica recently referred to this sea as <b>'East Sea (the sea of Japan)'</b> and viece versa. Encyclopaedia Britannica is not the so called touchy Koreans as you stated before. Japanese government must suggest the neutral name for resolution at least or accept <b>the order of international society for simultaneous designating</b>.
So what if Brittanica did? Why should that mean the rest of the entire Western World change all their maps, references, and vast libraries to accommodate touchy Koreans? What's in it for us? Since there is no valid logic here on either side, we side with custom by default and convenience. Unless you want to give us trade bonuses or money or something.
According to precedents, the sea located between Norway and Denmark in the east, Scotland and England in the west, and Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France in the south is officially referred as a neutral name <b>'North Sea'</b> even though widely known as 'Germanic Sea' before. and the sea separated by the islands of Great Britain from the Atlantic Ocean is officially referred as <b>'English Channel (La Manche)'</b> simultaneously.
The North Sea doesn't help your argument at all: it was only called the Germanic Sea BY THE GERMANS which helps the neutralist 'Sea of Japan' argument. And the 'English Chanel' is only called 'La Manche' by France: the rest of Europe calls it the English Chanel. Neither argument helps the nationalistic change theory, they help the custom and convenience theory.
At the IHO general meeting being held in Monaco on May 10 2007, David Wynford Williams, chairman of the meeting, proposed to the country representatives that <b>the name of the sea in question could be completely omitted in the fourth edition of the IHO's oceanographic chart</b>. It proved that this controversial issue over the name of this sea is disputed.
And in 1977, <b>UNCSGN resolution</b> said "when countries sharing a given geographical feature do not agree on a common name, it should be a <b>general rule</b> of cartography that <b>the name used by each of the countries concerned will be accepted. A policy of accepting only one or some of such names while excluding the rest would be inconsistent as well as inexpedient in practice</b>."
There're still controversies over the correct perception of history between countries like Greece and Macedonia. For the resolution of these 1974, <b>IHO resolution</b> said that if the sharing countries of a geographical feature do not agree on a common name, <b>the different names should be recognized simultaneously</b>.
but <b>'the sea of Japan'</b> was <b>adopted</b> at the meeting of the International Hydrographic Organization <b>in 1929 when Korea was still under</b> Japanese <b>colonial rule</b> and had no representation of the IHO. Therefore this controversial issue about designation should fairly revert to the starting line.
And on The Cairo Declaration in 1943, it was said that .... Japan will be also be expelled from all her territories which she has taken by violence and greed... and on the Potsdam Declaration in 1945 it was said that The terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out and <b>Japanese soveregnty shall be limited to the islands of Honshu, hokkaido, Kyushu, shikoku, and such minor island as we determine.</b>
It shows <b>the deals under the colonial rule during the WWII should be nullified</b> and the belongings taken under that inequivalent contract should be restituted to the original proprietors.
On February 22, 2007, German government returned a painting 'Fiat Justitia' that hung for many years in the presidential palace in Bonn to the heirs of a Jewish art collector Leo Bendel who sold it in the 1930s and was perished in the Holocause during the WWII since it was suggested that it's the Holocaust-linked art treasure and its sale was prompted by the Nazi ban.
Sorry that my english is so strange. but I'm trying my best. and hope to talk more appropriately soon. then I can talk more with you freely. By the way let me say this.
Say what? You didn't write anything else. Also, don't you think it's being a bit insulting while writing so carelessly? If you'd like to write in a non-native tongue, spend some time crafting the sentences. You may speak less, but you will be understood far more and not cause shame.
Japs think that they can buy anything (like sushi on top of women's naked body) with their money they stole from neighboring Asian countries during WWII. They buy their lobbying power with their money.
All of the counties admit this area is the sea of Japan. Only Krean scream that it is "the East sea", the chief of Krea has said it should be "the Peace of sea" and reacently some Korean said it should be called "the Krean sea". The people of the world cannot understans what Krean people want to insit.

Korea is always repeating intentional attack against Japan.

Japanese government must suggest the neutral name for resolution at least or accept <b>the order of international society for simultaneous designating</b>.
doctorexl 4 years ago
So what if Brittanica did? Why should that mean the rest of the entire Western World change all their maps, references, and vast libraries to accommodate touchy Koreans? What's in it for us? Since there is no valid logic here on either side, we side with custom by default and convenience. Unless you want to give us trade bonuses or money or something.

According to precedents, the sea located between Norway and Denmark in the east, Scotland and England in the west, and Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France in the south is officially referred as a neutral name <b>'North Sea'</b> even though widely known as 'Germanic Sea' before. and the sea separated by the islands of Great Britain from the Atlantic Ocean is officially referred as <b>'English Channel (La Manche)'</b> simultaneously.
doctorexl 4 years ago

Say what? You didn't write anything else. Also, don't you think it's being a bit insulting while writing so carelessly? If you'd like to write in a non-native tongue, spend some time crafting the sentences. You may speak less, but you will be understood far more and not cause shame.

All of the counties admit this area is the sea of Japan. Only Krean scream that it is "the East sea", the chief of Krea has said it should be "the Peace of sea" and reacently some Korean said it should be called "the Krean sea". The people of the world cannot understans what Krean people want to insit.
