  • At the time of the british raj in india it was hard to fight against a army which used large cannon guns and modern weapons. Still the gatka sikh warriors were known to be the best at their art, without modern warfare.

  • Gatka swords are better than slice, but not really good for thrust...........they should stage a fight btw Gatka and the Japanese Samurai, it would be an awesome fight, maybe bring Tony Cha from Thailand too.

  • @moderndesignworks .....i would love to see that!!!...though being of sikh parents i would hope that the singh wins, but it will be excellent to see!!!

  • hmmm very nice. Maybe he could be a character in soulcalibur (^_^)

  • It seems like you are the one showing ignorance right now.

  • LOLLLLL

  • gathka is a aggresive and spritual thing like saint soliders saint is sipurtaul and soilder is agressive but the aggresivness isnt rely anger its joshe(srri for tha spelling mistakes) i am in australia and if anycomplaints jus ask me i go to gathka to ;)

  • I've seen this Gatka Akhara, their wkd...

  • very good techniques 5 stars thanks for sharing

  • Captain Nemo!!!

  • Yes it is he... :O

  • I have seen those moves somewhere... the film "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen", I think Captain Nemo uses that sword technique or something very similar.

  • I think Captain Nemo is a Sikh so it only makes sense for him to use gatka and a tulwar.

  • Captain Nemo worshipped Kali in the movie did he not? Sikhs do not worship Kali or idols! I can't remember the movie that well so if anyone would like to correct me, be my guest!

  • but simkiliar weapons are used like the kirpan and the chakram

  • dnt wori desiestjatt04 i will

  • may be u shud learn som respect!

rather than use foul language y not jus explain wat u believe is ryt...

    u fool!

  • Keep hatin asshole...

  • not only gatka, but most martial arts

  • this martial art is AWSOME for two good reasons...

    1. they don't resort to bullcrap guns and bombs.(oh lordy how i HATE guns)

    2. they believe in honor and will fight proudly and not hide behind civilians.

    unlike warfare today.

  • I am so happy that this art is gaining popularity, i am so tired of japanese and chinese martial arts. i am realy tired of people who claim the katana is the greatist sword ever made, the talwar is atleast as good and many other swords are great weapons as well.

  • This is the martial art that was used by the Khalsa Nihangs under the command of Maharaja Ranjit Singh to create the Sikh empire in the early 1800s. It is very practical and it has been used in fighting since the Mughal rule of India, furthermore Sikhs are renowned for winning battles immensely outnumbered, because that is what this art was designed for.

  • gatka wasn't used by the nihangs, nihangs used shastar vidiya, gatka came about during british times when shastar vidiya was banned.

  • lionjatsingh, now heres a guy with sense

  • What's the source of your information.

  • Nihang Singhs from akali nihang khalsa

  • what's the difference between shastar bidya and gatka.

  • shastar vidiya is the the teaching of weapons and defence.

gatka actually means stick. it is more of a display form and sportsmanship.

  • gatka is da best lol

  • why you laughing?

  • be4 u try n suggest any wrong ideas im a sikh n i strongly beleive in it. I didnt intend 4 that message to go anywhere else

  • hi was wondering does anyone know how i can get in contact with the people who teach gatka

  • hey well where do u live coz i go 2 one of the gatka clases!! so if u wanna join jus send me a msg kl wjkk wjkf!

  • hey, wat gatka class do u go, im not lookin 2 join but i wish to film a gatka performance for my film year project at uni wish is based around Gatka n its history

  • where abouts to live... i mean most gurdwara's have a gatka class.

  • would u be willing to film shastar vidiya, the true khalsa warrior arts?

  • unfortunately no as I finished university and I dont not have the equipment available to me sorry

  • ok cool, hopefully in furute there will be such a project, at the moment there is a program about the chakram done with some shastar vidiya by discovery channel.

  • is it true u use the Chakram? disc? i heard other indians use it too

  • Yess It Was On Discovery Channel, Its Also On Youtube Know If Anyone Is Wlling To Watch It Its Great!

  • hey i can do gatka im tring to do that with a wooden stick i always get hit in the face lol

  • Coming from an Escrima point of view I too do not think it is very practical! In a modern street fight where your opponent is armed with a knife Gatka has no system that teaches how to defend yourself, whether it be empty hand work locks and take downs I've seen this MA in action it looks good but is not effective! Ps- My comment is not racist

  • Gakta is actually called Vishta Vidiya which pretty much means to fight in all forms i.e. from knowledge of fighting bear handed all to way to the art of fighting horse mounted...its just unfortunate to see that a majority is concentrated on the Shishma sword.

  • gathka is called shaster vidiya, when u use weapons

  • gatka is a one against may martial art designed so that one sikh /person can take on atleast 15 foes at once. you underestimate the gatka warriors, the long sword is for many foes yet they do not just use swords, if they do not have a long sword they use special stances called "penthras" which can be used to disarm and kill a foe bare handed within a couple of seconds.

  • very practical art. works in fights.

  • what they are wearing is reallly funny lol

running shoes with that uniform skirt thing? and gatka is totally not practical at all

the long history of this weird looking martial art probably start by someone just randomly swinging things around and think he's really strong~~ lol

  • very practical I have used it before..you don't know your racist and ignorant.

  • dude, to me you are just a bunch of ethnocentric freaks

it's not like i care about that people think or trying to change what you think

    my comment is totally neutral.

judging by the movement of this Gatka martial art, there is no precision or power what so ever, even if they land a slash it can only do some superficial lacerations but that's about it, not much damage.

  • the most critical part is when they swing the sword around they are wide open to attacks, you may argue that they use the shield to defence but it is useless against kicks and punches

the advantage i see in this martial art is that you can pretty much master it in a relatively short time compare to chinese wu tsu or western fencing

  • the guy doing gatka got a sword, he can jus chop off the dam leg...lol

  • No, this guy's footwork is pretty good. The art is old and martial arts don't tend to survive unless they work. But many of the old masters were killed by the British I understand. The Sikhs were renowned fighters. BTW I am not sikh and do TCMA.

  • i went to shastar vidya camp. i learned almost everything bout gatka. i know team usa captains. they live live here in cA. I learn frm them

  • Lol i do this. It's so hard. I hit myself loads.

  • How much do Sikh swords weigh, I have a Katana at home that weights 6lbs. BTW it would be good if you stated why the Sikhs took to the sword before the demo, which is only for definding not attacking. Thanks

  • Well he did make the point that we do 4 defence moves before 1 attacking strike during the pentra

  • Interesting
