This is the weakest Cynic arrangement since Pre-Focus with Tony Choy when the music was straight terrible. I can't understand how Paul Masvidal can be so amazing at arranging, yet have no concept of a decent mix. Chris Kringel is an AMAZING bassist, and he is almost entirely mixed out, Dave Senescu's tone is just terrible, and Paul's vocal effect sucks balls. So glad they shaped up when Tymon and Robin stepped in.
these guys came on stage and were like, "there's so few people in the crowd, but that's okay 'cause we're Cynic and we all get laid erre night." time to do some growls with my mind
Saw Cynic last night on their US tour opening night in LA. These guys are relentless on stage. Freakin' talented musicians. Awesome songs. Great concert!!!
soooo, did chris kringel get the frets removed from his spector for this? cause i have the exact same bass, down to the color, but they dont come in fretless. and that is most definately a fretless.
I heard a lot about these guys, but never actually really got into their stuff. I have to say, that WOW, this is awesome! Just wondering; who's doing the brutal vocals?
what an injustice!! fucking awesome band and place is half empty...Norway doesnt deserve another visit by this kick ass band..I bet half of this crowd came from thousands of miles to see them here...what a fucking kick ass band
rofl, that would explain it, cause Malone alwways has that mellow, rounded, fretless tone (Gordian Knot!!! when he's not on the STICK)...you would think he wouldnt even need fret markers but whatever...sick, unique bass tone. These guys are headlining the NOCTIS III METAL CONFERENCE in Calgary, Alberta in a few weeks! Can't wait
How the fuck do you mosh to cynic? I mean, there are parts where if you know the songs you know "okay, it gets heavier here." but it's hard to mosh to technical songs, especially ones with so much fucking atmosphere.
True, they have that whole slow jazzy melodic feeling about them.
But they aren't realy technical at all. Defeated Sanity,Necrophagist,Disgorge,Paths of Possession,Commit Suicide,Nile...those are technical bands. These guys have technical riffs but couldnt be considered technical death metal, they're songs are pretty easy to grasp the melody of.(Thats a good thing.)
@MaskedEmrys Well music is supossed to be listen to, anything else is optional. Some music is not ment for people to mosh, but rather to be listen only, and this is the case.
@MaskedEmrys because majority of those fuckers didn't come to see cynic. as a matter of fact they just came to get wasted and throw their dickskinners up around in a cyrcle jerk of imbeciles, giving true music appreciators a bad name. all antics aside, this song is something outside of this...
if you like death metal, i think focus is better: it's death with progressive elements; traced in air, instead, it's progressive with death metal elements. of course this deals with their personal growth, but still, i think focus is better. at any rate: enjoy!
I don't agree. I think that Focus and TiA are both incredible in their own ways. Neither is better than the other. They're like brothers, Focus being the younger one of the two. They each have their own personalities, TiA is just more mature and focused, if you'll excuse the pun.
Yeah, but the thing is Focus in 1993 was new, original and dynamic. Fast forward into 2008 and TiA offers us nothing we have not seen in the 15 years since. All the while the majority of people sleep on great acts like Wayd, Mithras and Martyr.
Plus the album gets mentioned as mature/focused. I mean, hahahaha. What the hell is that? Doublespeak for predictable, unchallenging and foreseen. All things I imagine Cynic never wanted to be and never where in 1993................. I hope that puts things in better perspective for you all.
It doesn't matter what Cynic wanted to be in 1993, because they were barely out of high school back then. They're all grown men with careers, so of course priorities will have changed.
Cynic and predictable/unchallenging is a paradox. That's like calling Cannibal Corpse soft and pretty.
I can only assume that you haven't listened to TiA. If you had, you wouldn't be making comments about how it offers nothing new.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The intention of reviving Cynic was to bring back 1993. And for the record, more like barely out of university.
Sadly, that's what I feel they did with TiA. More use of softer vox, some post-rock moments and sonic meanders. Not essentially bad but there wasn't that shock or incorporation of something new to any significant level. Post-rock was/is too flavour of the month to be that something new. For Cynic TiA is predictable and unchallenging, they stuck with what they knew.
No.. I simply read the interviews they did in Terrorizer and Zero Tolerance. From the horses mouth really.
Young, implying that their youth suggested they lacked something. But that works vice versa.
And ill informed based on the judgement I'm somehow not familar with TiA? Let me make a jump like yourself sir and suggest that unlike myself who was tentatively awating the new Cynic record to arrive you came to discover them thereafter through TiA. Regardless, the reviews on M-A say it all..
I've read many interviews and I've spoken to both of them myself. What I've read clearly implied that they were not and did not want to write Focus II.
You're correct, and because we're discussing maturity, we can assume that they've matured as they've aged. Does it always work like that? No, but in this case it's not really up for discussion that they have.
I concede to your last point. I apologize for making baseless assumptions.
For me though.. it was too much like Focus II. I wanted them to break free, do something new and significantly different. You know.. maybe like how Focus was originally conceived. Instead I felt like the Metal aspect of it was minimalised and what they had been doing elsewhere as musicians simply crept in.
I love it. I don't really think of it as being metal, nor did I hope it would or wouldn't be. I think it's a great record, and great music, in itself.
Wow...just reading this exchange made me feel good about my music preferences. Passion and intellectualism combined with an ultimate focus on objectivity and subjectivity...cheers to you both. Needless to say...great fucking band!

yeah this comment is aimed at davedenvers privious comments i remember when i bought focus and thought it was the worst thing i ever heard mainly for i was into sadus pestillence masacre. but when i listend to this album later i realised how special a band and talented they are its now one of my fav albums you are just cliking onto varios bands and juging there music in 10 seconds buy the cds man traced in air rules by the way
I don't think that Tony didn't want to tour with them. It just that he's an succesful entrepreneur nowadays, and probably don't have time to contribute with his amazing growls (which is a rare thing among entrepreneurs)
What's up with the horribly ASS cameraman that seems to totally love the rhythm guitarist when the lead is playing a solo, and the lead when the rhythm guitarist is playing his???
personally i think cynic are pioneers. They created something so new and different. I think the robotic vocoals and the screaming are both cool. I think this band should get more recognition that it gets. But at the same time its pretty cool that they are underground as they are. Cant wait to buy there new album. I have gone through about 5 copies of focus.
Im on my 3rd copy of focus hahahaha... and I've been rocking the new album (leaked) and it takes a minute to soak in, just like focus did at first but their new album has amazing musicianship and song writing and texture, its something else
ive been playing the transcripts of this song and my lord, it is no easy feat, this stuff is not easy to play, highly advanced shit right here, its amazing how they arent recognized for compositions alone
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
vocals are an important part of metal. cynic fans are so gay all my comments are downrated because i express my opinions. you can all fuck off and die
To DaveDenver, The vocals are not a shame, they are original and add a whole other element to this band. Instead of doing death metal vocals the entire time they add melody. You gotta use your imagination. They are supposed to be other worldly, and with the number of galaxies in the universe that we know of it's hard to say this type of creature wouldn't exist. Just close your eye's and let it take you places. If you want cynic with other vocals listen to death - human or their demos.
haha that solo was horrible! Cynic will never be the same!

I'm almost glad I couldn't find their albums for free anywhere... I have too much respect for them not to buy the albums now!

Who does the growled vocals?
eetufck 3 years ago
it's samples from the album since the guy didn't want to tour with them or something like that
bububuvard 3 years ago 4
I don't think that Tony didn't want to tour with them. It just that he's an succesful entrepreneur nowadays, and probably don't have time to contribute with his amazing growls (which is a rare thing among entrepreneurs)

What's up with the horribly ASS cameraman that seems to totally love the rhythm guitarist when the lead is playing a solo, and the lead when the rhythm guitarist is playing his???
Holy ass.

Is the other guitarist Muhammad from Necrophagist?

personally i think cynic are pioneers. They created something so new and different. I think the robotic vocoals and the screaming are both cool. I think this band should get more recognition that it gets. But at the same time its pretty cool that they are underground as they are. Cant wait to buy there new album. I have gone through about 5 copies of focus.
drumnerd1975 3 years ago 4
Im on my 3rd copy of focus hahahaha... and I've been rocking the new album (leaked) and it takes a minute to soak in, just like focus did at first but their new album has amazing musicianship and song writing and texture, its something else
ive been playing the transcripts of this song and my lord, it is no easy feat, this stuff is not easy to play, highly advanced shit right here, its amazing how they arent recognized for compositions alone

who's growling there ?
aaszx1 3 years ago
They couldn't get the original vocalist so it's just playback but I'm pretty sure now they have a new guy who sounds pretty much identical.

DaveDenver 3 years ago
i say that you should not care about the vocals...this is metal not freakin rap that has only the vocals!!(i love audio preview)

vocals are an important part of metal. cynic fans are so gay all my comments are downrated because i express my opinions. you can all fuck off and die
DaveDenver 3 years ago
To DaveDenver, The vocals are not a shame, they are original and add a whole other element to this band. Instead of doing death metal vocals the entire time they add melody. You gotta use your imagination. They are supposed to be other worldly, and with the number of galaxies in the universe that we know of it's hard to say this type of creature wouldn't exist. Just close your eye's and let it take you places. If you want cynic with other vocals listen to death - human or their demos.

i do listen to death they're my favorite band i was just hoping for something better.
DaveDenver 3 years ago
gotcha, well none the less you should buy the new album if you haven't already. It's not so robotic sounding but still amazing.

the beginning is killer

another masterpiece from that album. My brother cant past the weird vocals but it works for me :)
I love how Paul is raging with the short hair, times have changed but the music is still perfect :)
Wish they had a "real" singer doing the growls and Paul would sing his parts with no processing but ill take whatever I can get
