  • haha that solo was horrible! Cynic will never be the same!

  • 3:37 Jason Gobel in the crowd?

  • This is the weakest Cynic arrangement since Pre-Focus with Tony Choy when the music was straight terrible. I can't understand how Paul Masvidal can be so amazing at arranging, yet have no concept of a decent mix. Chris Kringel is an AMAZING bassist, and he is almost entirely mixed out, Dave Senescu's tone is just terrible, and Paul's vocal effect sucks balls. So glad they shaped up when Tymon and Robin stepped in.

  • @Zechdlak

What makes you think Paul was in charge of the mix? Sometimes sound guy's fuck you over at gigs.

  • I love how some people in the audience look as if they dont know whats going - obviously they are not a wave to....

  • where the fuck is that !!? it seems soooo random!!

  • Roland VG guitar synth. You can see the extra pickup next to the bridge on his guitar.

  • 2:01 is the reason why Masvidal should have kept long hair :D

  • these guys came on stage and were like, "there's so few people in the crowd, but that's okay 'cause we're Cynic and we all get laid erre night." time to do some growls with my mind

  • The guy at 3:14 is like ''Oh my god I'm so totally getting this. Oh wait, I'm not.''

  • @Skjoldr16 HAHAHA FUNNIEST SHIT EVER

  • @Skjoldr16 haha right? he seems a little...special.

  • @graveborn

I don't care what you call it. I mean this band doesn't get anywhere near the amount of attention it deserves. They shouldnt be obscure.

  • who the hell is doing the growls?

  • @jek21 it's a pre-recorded voice

  • @jek21 the lead singer does them with his mind. It's what they usually do live

  • Bah! There's barely anyone in the crowd. Christ this is one of the most underrated bands of all of teh timez!

  • 2:00, oops, sorry :-)

  • with cynic you don't mosh or headbang... just stand there with full attention...

  • How Paul windmills when such complex parts I'll never know.

  • Kid at 2:42 = "So this is what a psychosis feels like."

  • 2:09 i'm sorry but head banging just wont work without long hair :( but i guess his is expiremental with jazz fusion style headbanging

  • 4:21 Paul never ceases to amaze me.

  • Anyone else here fucking hate the screams?

  • @MercilessIgnorance Fuck off.

  • @MercilessIgnorance no, i just hate that i have no idea where the are coming from

  • Is it just me, or does Paul Masvidal and Jake Gyllenhaal kinda look like each other? Cynic rules. Hope I'll catch them some day live.

  • Man, Paul always looks so spaced out lol

  • I just saw them live in LA. 1st gig of their US headline tour. They were amazing!

  • Paul Masvidal has some insane windmills!

  • Whos the guy in the backwards baseball cap?

  • @RealityBend David Senescu, he played guitar for cynic in 2007

  • @RealityBend Goku.

  • 0 dislikes... this is great :D ...

  • soooo, did chris kringel get the frets removed from his spector for this? cause i have the exact same bass, down to the color, but they dont come in fretless. and that is most definately a fretless.

  • I heard a lot about these guys, but never actually really got into their stuff. I have to say, that WOW, this is awesome! Just wondering; who's doing the brutal vocals?

  • @BastianBlackrain A celestial being.

  • @BastianBlackrain he was the guitarist on the album and he did the growls you can see him in the wacken show i think

  • I love death and cynic!

    2 of my favorite bands!

  • moshing to cynic? does that even make sense?

  • * man looking onward confused*, Followed by the timely vocal, "and they're all standing still."

  • Chris Kringel is playing bass here

  • @dmguitarist99 santa? haha

  • Ok, there is no way to make a mosh with this beautiful song, but ... this audience seems dead ...

Except for the dude at 3:38 with a Cynic shirt...he seems to be enjoying!

Whatever, awesome band! Hope they come from Brazil!

  • @Soriano1994 Watch the videos from MEXICO ...its not to much, but way better

  • are these guys sean malone and sean reinert? at drums and bass????

  • it's sean reinert at the drums but the bass guy isn't sean malone. I don't know his name :/

  • @Riven1989 so it seems... looks like malone is only at the studio works huh? too bad

  • awsome

  • death metal vocals are actually Tony Teegarden

  • the harsh voices are samplers of death singer voice

  • chuck??

  • the singer actually played guitar with death

  • Anyone know what floor fx units they're using? They look like MIDI?

  • looks like the boss gt-8 or 10, with some other rack units for midi

  • Who does the harsh vocals?

  • I cant find him either, Im believing is the drummer.

  • @javierlocutor nope, not the drummer. He has no mic on him and there is a shot of his face during harsh vocals and he is not moving his mouth.

I believe it has to be a sample or something like that.

At some point I thought there was a 5th guy but it was a cameraman.

  • Yes, I noticed that too, so I got wrong, maybe it is a sample as you say... anyways, great band. Have a nice day!

  • does anyone know what senescu has on the body of his jackson?

  • A MIDI-pickup. For sure it's Roland GK3.

It picks the sound of each string separately so the guitar synthesizer could take the pitch of every string even if they sound simultaneously.

  • 2:41-2:41, wow that kid sure is excited..

  • 2:41-2:45*

  • I'm living in 20 seconds! right now!

  • what an injustice!! fucking awesome band and place is half empty...Norway doesnt deserve another visit by this kick ass band..I bet half of this crowd came from thousands of miles to see them here...what a fucking kick ass band

  • That's what I call stage presence... At least, the music is great...

  • pro shot my ass, lets not foxus on the lead guitarist while he solos, fuck off.....

  • And it pissed me off they weren't focusing on the bass in the beginning, such an amazing bass line.

  • yeah, they're obviously not too pro are they? lol i mean they recorded it in mutliple angles but they just managed to choose the dumbest angles lol

  • @P5ych00 That would have more to do with editing than filming. But yeah, fail.

  • to the 3 below me. this isn't sean malone. he didn't rejoin cynic right away, this is kris kringel. and yes that is his real name

  • awesome progness!! the bassist (is that Malone?) sounds like hes on a fretless, but I keep seeing frets... and insight?

  • The lines are just fret markers. :-).

  • rofl, that would explain it, cause Malone alwways has that mellow, rounded, fretless tone (Gordian Knot!!! when he's not on the STICK)...you would think he wouldnt even need fret markers but whatever...sick, unique bass tone. These guys are headlining the NOCTIS III METAL CONFERENCE in Calgary, Alberta in a few weeks! Can't wait

  • Such a good creative band. Nothing like them

  • Then you have some searching to do lol.

  • sean malone??????

  • i don't know why but this is just fucking awesome.

  • Its funny to watch Paul windmill with lack of hair lol

  • What a lazy croud, those assholes should be moshing not sitting around like idiots.

Cynic deserve better fans than them.

  • How the fuck do you mosh to cynic? I mean, there are parts where if you know the songs you know "okay, it gets heavier here." but it's hard to mosh to technical songs, especially ones with so much fucking atmosphere.

  • True, they have that whole slow jazzy melodic feeling about them.

But they aren't realy technical at all. Defeated Sanity,Necrophagist,Disgorge,Paths of Possession,Commit Suicide,Nile...those are technical bands. These guys have technical riffs but couldnt be considered technical death metal, they're songs are pretty easy to grasp the melody of.(Thats a good thing.)

  • Cynic is technical in different ways than all of those bands. Cynic is technical in the jazz aspect of their music, not the dm aspect.

  • Well yeah. I thought you where refering to them as Technical Death Metal. Not simply saying they're technical. Wich of course they are.

  • ah, okay

  • You just have to stand there and take it all in.

  • @MaskedEmrys Well music is supossed to be listen to, anything else is optional. Some music is not ment for people to mosh, but rather to be listen only, and this is the case.

  • @MaskedEmrys Drugs...? ;p

  • @MaskedEmrys Cynic are atmospheric as fuck.

You don't mosh, you take it all in.

  • @MaskedEmrys because majority of those fuckers didn't come to see cynic. as a matter of fact they just came to get wasted and throw their dickskinners up around in a cyrcle jerk of imbeciles, giving true music appreciators a bad name. all antics aside, this song is something outside of this...

  • Lol, you can't really mosh to music like this.

    Only stand in awe.

  • I would find a way. But Id probly just stand in one spot windmill headbanging and air guitaring like I always do.

  • Those guys are watching and listening. They appreciate the music more than it seems.

  • Listen to Paul kill that solo.

  • Martyr is a really awesome band but nothing sound like cynic they are unic

  • Epic Song

  • I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG!!!!

  • I didn't realize that I actually like Cynic until I heard Traced in Air. Makes me want to give Focus a closer listen next time.

  • if you like death metal, i think focus is better: it's death with progressive elements; traced in air, instead, it's progressive with death metal elements. of course this deals with their personal growth, but still, i think focus is better. at any rate: enjoy!

  • Agreed. Well-stated, and Focus is indeed their best.

  • I don't agree. I think that Focus and TiA are both incredible in their own ways. Neither is better than the other. They're like brothers, Focus being the younger one of the two. They each have their own personalities, TiA is just more mature and focused, if you'll excuse the pun.

  • It doesn't matter what Cynic wanted to be in 1993, because they were barely out of high school back then. They're all grown men with careers, so of course priorities will have changed.

Cynic and predictable/unchallenging is a paradox. That's like calling Cannibal Corpse soft and pretty.

I can only assume that you haven't listened to TiA. If you had, you wouldn't be making comments about how it offers nothing new.

  • Really? You must be best buddies with Paul and Sean to save such in depth knowledge of their intentions.

My comment about their ages implied that they were young. Exaggeration is an important literary tool.

I cannot argue your last point because an ill informed opinion is still an opinion.

  • No.. I simply read the interviews they did in Terrorizer and Zero Tolerance. From the horses mouth really.

Young, implying that their youth suggested they lacked something. But that works vice versa.

And ill informed based on the judgement I'm somehow not familar with TiA? Let me make a jump like yourself sir and suggest that unlike myself who was tentatively awating the new Cynic record to arrive you came to discover them thereafter through TiA. Regardless, the reviews on M-A say it all..

  • I've read many interviews and I've spoken to both of them myself. What I've read clearly implied that they were not and did not want to write Focus II.

You're correct, and because we're discussing maturity, we can assume that they've matured as they've aged. Does it always work like that? No, but in this case it's not really up for discussion that they have.

I concede to your last point. I apologize for making baseless assumptions.

  • For me though.. it was too much like Focus II. I wanted them to break free, do something new and significantly different. You know.. maybe like how Focus was originally conceived. Instead I felt like the Metal aspect of it was minimalised and what they had been doing elsewhere as musicians simply crept in.

  • I love it. I don't really think of it as being metal, nor did I hope it would or wouldn't be. I think it's a great record, and great music, in itself.

  • Wow...just reading this exchange made me feel good about my music preferences. Passion and intellectualism combined with an ultimate focus on objectivity and subjectivity...cheers to you both. Needless to say...great fucking band!

  • I couldn't agree any more myself.

  • Comment removed

  • i can't agree that Focus is more death metal because i don't hear anymore death metal elements than in Traced In Air.

  • There's death metal in Evolutionary Sleeper and the Unknown Guest. But yeah, nothing like Focus.

  • AMAZING!!! CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THEM LIVE!!! And what's with that static public? Fans in Western Europe and America totally don't go crazy at shows, they are used to getting all the bands they want. In Eastern Europe, when you rarely get the chance of seeing awesome bands, the atmosphere is totally different.

  • OMG! The throat vocal is a sync! BS! :(

  • Haha paul windmill-headbanging without any hair. still awesome because hes paul.

  • paul looks like john mayer, except hes actually good at guitar and isn't a jerk off yuppie lol

  • Don't be fooled: John Mayer is also good. Just not in jazz-fusion

  • @thefreezingmoon07 John Mayer is actually very good at guitar, but he writes rather...simple guitar

  • @thefreezingmoon07 and is more tan

  • Shitty public in norway ?? ;xx

  • Norway only got about 4 million people, dude. Not everyone of them likes metal. (gotta defend my motherland! lol)

  • Why They went listen Cynic if they dont like metal ?? :D:D

  • it was a festival. and alot o metalheads dont like cynis because they think theyre 2 soft. if it was a metal festival, many mmight have come to see bands like cannibal corpse or gorefest

  • It's the pure entity of Cynic. Welcome to cynical sphere :)

  • it is something that definetly (misspelled) grows on you. just listen and read along with the lyrics and youll find that it fits the mysticism of this band

  • the scream vocals were prerecorded (i think they're the original tracks from Focus) -Paul's been playing custom MIDI loaded Steinberger guitars for a long time... This is the first time I've seen him with passive pickups though

  • Comment removed

  • Dude, who's doing the screaming vocals in this performance?

  • does anyone know what guitar is paul using?

  • steinberger guitars.

  • Look at 3:24, looks like there's almost no crowd. Great band though.

  • I love Cynics album "Focus".

  • 3:39

I want that guys shirt. Love this song.

  • Same here, man.

But tell him he can keep his face, lol. Poor dude looks like those stereotypical fat old grannies, but with a slight beard. That and the poor fella's teeth look like hell.

  • wow im speechless. It reminds me Coprofago in a much more evolved figure

  • omg Masvidal <3 he is a god

  • Agreed.

  • dont forget reinert! lol they all are

  • I really wish more people knew about these guys..They are one of my favorites of all time! By the way buy Traced in Air it is AMAZING!!!

  • yeah this comment is aimed at davedenvers privious comments i remember when i bought focus and thought it was the worst thing i ever heard mainly for i was into sadus pestillence masacre. but when i listend to this album later i realised how special a band and talented they are its now one of my fav albums you are just cliking onto varios bands and juging there music in 10 seconds buy the cds man traced in air rules by the way

  • I'm almost glad I couldn't find their albums for free anywhere... I have too much respect for them not to buy the albums now!

  • Who does the growled vocals?

  • it's samples from the album since the guy didn't want to tour with them or something like that

  • I don't think that Tony didn't want to tour with them. It just that he's an succesful entrepreneur nowadays, and probably don't have time to contribute with his amazing growls (which is a rare thing among entrepreneurs)

  • I bought the new CD Traced in Air and it's awesome!...they're fuckin' original as hell...

  • What's up with the horribly ASS cameraman that seems to totally love the rhythm guitarist when the lead is playing a solo, and the lead when the rhythm guitarist is playing his???

    Holy ass.

  • No, he isn't. Sorry.

  • Is the other guitarist Muhammad from Necrophagist?

  • personally i think cynic are pioneers. They created something so new and different. I think the robotic vocoals and the screaming are both cool. I think this band should get more recognition that it gets. But at the same time its pretty cool that they are underground as they are. Cant wait to buy there new album. I have gone through about 5 copies of focus.

  • Im on my 3rd copy of focus hahahaha... and I've been rocking the new album (leaked) and it takes a minute to soak in, just like focus did at first but their new album has amazing musicianship and song writing and texture, its something else

ive been playing the transcripts of this song and my lord, it is no easy feat, this stuff is not easy to play, highly advanced shit right here, its amazing how they arent recognized for compositions alone

  • Paul Masvidal has long hair at heart.

  • That windmill menace of Paul at around 2:05 is from the heart indeed, I felt that too my friend - Masvidal rocks

  • who's growling there ?

  • They couldn't get the original vocalist so it's just playback but I'm pretty sure now they have a new guy who sounds pretty much identical.

  • I actually love the robotic vocal. I think its another factor that make them so unique. Just sayin

  • yeah i know what you mean i just prefer the screaming

  • i say that you should not care about the vocals...this is metal not freakin rap that has only the vocals!!(i love audio preview)

  • To DaveDenver, The vocals are not a shame, they are original and add a whole other element to this band. Instead of doing death metal vocals the entire time they add melody. You gotta use your imagination. They are supposed to be other worldly, and with the number of galaxies in the universe that we know of it's hard to say this type of creature wouldn't exist. Just close your eye's and let it take you places. If you want cynic with other vocals listen to death - human or their demos.

  • gotcha, well none the less you should buy the new album if you haven't already. It's not so robotic sounding but still amazing.

  • the beginning is killer

  • another masterpiece from that album. My brother cant past the weird vocals but it works for me :)

I love how Paul is raging with the short hair, times have changed but the music is still perfect :)

Wish they had a "real" singer doing the growls and Paul would sing his parts with no processing but ill take whatever I can get

    CYNIC 4ever
