I wonder why they put the power switch for the laser on the right side. It seems it would make more sense to put it on the left, for right-handed users.
i bought it. it does feel slightly lighter than the 642/442, and the grip is a little nicer for concealment. after shooting it a bit, i decided that the laser was so annoying to use it wasn't worth it. the pulsating thing is retarded. also, the idea of an ambidextrous release is silly and annoying for anyone familiar with other revolvers. if Smith removed the laser and put the release where it belongs, this would be the revolver to buy. but it isn't.
I Got A Small Stupid Question, Hope Any One With The Revolver Version Can Answer Me. "Does Your Cylinder Release Have A Lot Of Play?" I Just Got Mine Today And I Noticed It Rocks A Lot. Thanks In Advances.
Love my new S&W 380 Bodyguard Revolver. My first revolver, so release seems natural to me.. don't have to lay it on it's side to release. The laser activation grows on you. Laser is very easy to sight in. Long trigger pull, as expected. Shooting a .38+P 110 grain feels very nice, easy to handle. Carry in a cheap level zero pocket holster- no problems. Weight is reasonable.
Complaint: Plastic release can get caught when pulling out of your pocket, particularly back pocket.
I own one of these guys and haven't had any problems with it. It shoots great, is fairly accurate with iron sights for a snubbie and extremely accurate when using the laser. I have also shot the LCR and do not care much for it. Both are great snubbies but I prefer the S&W.
This was my first handgun purchase. I notice on the inside of the gun, where the cylinder goes, is scratched. It looks like its from where the cylinder opens and closes and it took some of the blackness off the inside, like scratches.. Is this normal?
Have shot TWO of them. The first would fire one shot then require two trigger pulls to advance the cylinder and fire the next. The breech and c ylinder ratchets were bouncing out of sinc from recoil and it required two trigger pulls to rearticulate them and then fire the gun. Both revolvers I shot hit five inches to the left at 25 yards, approx four inches at 50 feet. The second revolver functioned without problems. On a positive note, it was reasonabley comfortable with +P
These revovler tend to shoot way left and low. Some of them fail to rotate the cylinder as the ill-conceived cylinder ratchet mechanism bounces out of register during recoil . A fine revolver if you do not try to shoot it.
@cumpston76708 Have you shot this gun? have you personally had problems with it? or is this something you read in the forum? I have this gun, I shoot is regularly with 0 problems.
I want this revolver so badly, but the grip is such a turn off. Any chance of an aftermarket manufacturer will make a larger grip for this .38? Great Review, thanks for sharing.
I disagree with this review when it comes to cost. Being polymer as well DOES reduce the cost as the revolver costs the same or less as other competitors and other J frame s&w revolvers (~$415), but you pretty much get a FREE built in laser, a $150-$200 value, or atleast that's how much I see laser grips going for nowadays
Our new Governor will allow conceal and carry soon. This looks perfect for an ankle holster, do prices usually drop after a year or so? Wow it's expensive!
@FlyingPancreas yeah this model is quite affordable. However I saw no steel plate above the forcing cone! If there is one I missed it. If not, the area above the forcing cone will wear--correct me if I am wrong. I saw reports of the Ruger LCR wearing badly due to it missing the steel plate above it's forcing cone. By the way this is S&W's DIRECT COPY of the LCR :P haha
Laser and safety might be better designed on this compared to the .380, but it sucks that it effects your holstering. Lasers also should have had a mode selection switch or something so you could just press the button to turn it on and even make it so that it would just stay on as long as the button was held like most laser sights already do. I actually think these guns might have been better if they didn't worry about the lasers. Maybe that's just me.
I just picked one up at my local gun shop. Paid 512 bucks for it. so far very happy with the way it feels in the hand and the way it shoots. I like the laser a lot. it came bore sighted and was just about dead nuts on right out of the box. Not sure on the holster fit. I havent decided which one to get for it yet. It did fit nice in an "in the pants" Uncle mikes 38 snub noise holster. Im right handed and the laser and cylinder release were both very quick and easy to operate.
@GunWebsites Yea could you show how it fits in say, an Uncle Mikes size 3 pocket holster that the ruger LCP and the kel tec P3AT fit in pretty nicely. I kinda wanna see if it is still pocket carry-able
@GunWebsites ---Ive been trying to find a holster as well... Ive been told one is on the way, but does anybody know if there is a specific holster already made?
Can't wait until the range video on this. I just rented a revolver a couple of weeks ago and was really wanting to get one over a second semiauto. I've seen enough semiautos jam in person and wouldn't like that to happen to me in a life and death situation
@GunWebsites lol ya kinda sad isnt it now if someone tries to mug you and you pull it and it gets in their eyes and the cops pick him up he'll sue your ass off i swear america what happened to you??? now you have to be afraid to hurt the criminal but if the criminal hurts you they had a bad child hood and are disadvantaged... / rant

Yeah, agree 100%, think the laser is just a bullshit gimmick. Might be okay if you KNEW you were going into a gunfight, but id probably bring a bigger gun. The S&W .380 laser is in a worse place.
i like my LCR with crimson trace better because it weighs less and you just have to grip the crimson trace to activate it instead of change your grip also i bet the LCR trigger blows it away only thing i like on the smith is the latch to open the cylinder since im a lefty
S&W's response to the LCR. I like the position of the laser better than the LCR's. Thanks for getting us a look at in. By the way, did you ever pick up the LCR for yourself? I subjectively had the opposite experience as you, I pretty much loved the LCR, till I shot it. Now, I'm sold on the S&W trigger action. Lets see you shoot her.
@buckwheat40 Hey Man, Tried them next to each other. The Hogue grips, although comfortable, took more time to get back on target than the S&W. Also, I really enjoy the staging of the S&W's trigger, which of course the LCR is a departure from. I was open-minded about it. But, for my % & liking, I'd go with the Smith. My batting average was objectively higher. Plus, I had seen some drama with the LCR, as I'm sure you have. In a revolver, I expect unwavering reliability and wear.
I kinda like the idea of the laser being just above the cylinder (hit it on the head with the screwdrivers), but the idea if cycling through all the differentsettings for the laser would really ?aggravate? me. I will have to see how she shoots before making a definite verdict as of yet
