Ron Paul's opinions about PUBLIC POLICY and backing the currency with COMPETING elements reflects the Congress responsibility to coin money and determine the value thereof. It has nothing to do with You and Me personally buying and taking possession of gold, silver or competing currencies.
With sufficient diversity in the 'competing elements- ie gold, silver, palladium, platinum, other currency' you would curtail a manipulation. Nothing but G*d, is fool-proof against the Committee of 300!

What worries me is the virtual monopoly central banks have on gold. Would this not hinder congress, and put it at risk of conflicting interests of central bankers?

On monetary policy they are spot on.
Even though the necessary reforms have not passed in referendum, the 1999 reforms have brought about much progress.
When Wall Street dropped 777, Venezuela was unaffected.
So, check it out, the proposed reforms...

My congressman originally voted against the bailout, but changed his mind on the second time around. I guess he must've been paid more money to change his mind. It's really sad when corporate fascists can pay to get anything they want.
