Why do other countries say "Why don't Americans mind their own business?" when we are volunteering to help out in Africa, or places that have had natural disasters. Then they complain that Americans don't pay any attention to whats going on around the world. We pay attention to what's most important to us. The average American cares more about poverty in 3rd. world countries than other cultures and lifestyles, which believe it or not we already know a lot about, it's required in school here.
It's not that they're stupid, but Americans live in a big country and tend to have the idea that they live in the best country in the world, resulting in not giving a fuck about other cultures and lifestyles etc etc.
How about 40-50% believe the earth is 600 years old,45% of the scientific community and 85% of the public believe in an invisible friend in the sky, 1 out 5 high school students cant read, 1 out 4 are diagnosed with mental disorder, 67% don't know the economic system used, 70% don't know almost nothing about the constitution, history, government, 37% can't find the U.S. on the map. Is that enough for you? The list is staggering.

On terms of intelligence, I think there was a statistic that TIME did, that have shown that the test scores taken in school by children had an average of 500 points on reading and high 400's on math which is ok, it is pretty average. People are stupid everywhere, but Americans aren't exposed to foreign media as much, so they don't see the stupid foreigners. They only see stupid Americans. When you're exposed to only a certain facet of society, it becomes easy for some (stupid/arrogant/pretentious/SODEEP) people to assume that this small facet represents the whole.
This is true. My whole life my Dad complained to me about how limited foreign media is here in America. Pop culture is easily three times bigger here than it is in Spain too, and that takes a lot of media. In Spain they give more than enough coverage of foreign news, here it's pretty low.
