I think that the backing track is added after the recording, and he records with a mic in front of the amp... Thats a solution ;)

It just comes down to the speakers and cabinet and amp mostly. Carlos played it with all sorts of guitars and still sounded like Carlos. A lot of tone comes from the hands, in how you play, but the speakers and amp contribute a lot of someone's sound.
