Great video. I won't get into the "this one does it better than that one" crap. Even with the number of hits he has, George does a lot of covers in his shows but I've never heard him do this one. He still sings the music "he likes". That's the ultimate in respect as far as I'm concerned. I think it's also interesting to note, he's playing a Takamine guitar. Never seen him play anything but American made guitars. Thanks for posting this video, I found it quite by accident.
One needs to sing "There stands the Glass" with the understanding that the glass represents an anesthesia for pain and not as an upbeat ditty. Take a listen to Webb Pierce, R.I.P., Conway Twitty, R.I.P, Loretta Lynn, or Ted Hawkins, R.I.P, all of whom do a better rendition.
@RemoML Your a fucking idiot! I have listen to Webb Pierce and he can not touch "King George" sorry to say. Let me tell you if George did not do this song people would not even be mentioning Webb Pierce. If your a Webb Pierce fan why don't you just be thankful that George did the song. It was not even a number one hit for him, so George Strait must really respect the guy for doing it.
@basgambler1211 It is "You're an f... idiot"--learn some grammar or you will be judged poorly! Anyhow, not a fan of Webb Pierce (and it is not a Webb Pierce song either). Pierce is good, but he sings it too fast. Loretta Lynn (Vinyl only) and Ted Hawkins are my favorites.
Today, Strait does a better job with this song. Back when this video was shot, his voice was just too pure. Now he has a some gravel in his voice. He still needs a better arrangement. I stand by my critique.
Personally,i liked George in the 80's but his music is pretty much always the same,i pretty much took more of an interest in Jamey Johnson, but George is still ok by me.
@MrDemonface123 I think both artists do it their seperate ways; Webb Pierce has the early sixties Nashville sound and George Strait's Texas sound. Both do a great job on this song, and it makes the song slightly more relevant to those who don't necessarily like the 60's Nashville sound.
But in the end, both this and Webb's version are truly country songs, unlike songs today called Country Music.
HE'S A REAL MAN AND THAT VOICE .. HOPE I HEAR IT IN HEAVEN !!!LOVE THIS VERSION TOO..MY UNCLE WAS AN ENTERTAINER AND PLAYED WITH JIMMY REEVES. HE PLAYED THIS SONG FOR ME ALL THE TIME WHEN I WENT TO SEE HIM PERFORM. MY UNCLE WAS GROVER JACKSON FROM TENNESSEE AND HE WAS GOOD.KIND AND GENEROUS TO ALL
I first heard his sog from CArl Smith many years ago as a child, so it is a very old song and Ilike all th verions, but I think George is doing a great job!
No one can touch Johnny Bush's version of this old Webb Piece classic. Even George will say that.
Check out my new biography on the life of George Strait entitled KING GEORGE The Triumphs and Tragedies In The Life Of George Strait The King Of Country Music online at amazon or STRAITBOOK webtsite. I dedicated this bio to Johnny Bush. I've shared the stage with both Johnny and George over 40 years ago in South Texas.
Love this song and his live version of this song!!! I wish he would record it for an album. He is the King of Country Music!!! Thanks for posting this video. Love it!!!
This was from an outdoor festival here in Canada at Craven Saskatchewan back in the early '90s.

I'm really torn. George does such a great vocal on this one. But Webb has the better musical sound.
