  • You know...money isn't everything, there's something beautiful about the way these people are. They're happy as they are and do what they can to survive. Can any of you say the same if you were stricken with poverty?

  • Jesus Christ these people need to be exterminated..lol

  • Yes they do get some assistance but that doesn't make them rich. Most likely Iree saved the money out of her check because other than land taxes and her electric bill their expenses is minimal. They raise and grow most of their food. Most of their homes are shacks.

  • I actually don't think the family is unfriendly. Most likely when people like this in isolated areas they become distrustful of strangers. They stick with their own families.

  • These people are not that poor. There are plenty of people much worse off than these people (myself included). Their houses are actually quite nice inside. And their property is gorgeous. They also get welfare checks. When they need $500.00 for bail granny goes into the other room and grabs $500.00 cash I dont even have that in the bank. Also they are not nice people as depicted. Watch all the episodes they are trash. Check out the hillbillies in New England if you want to see some Good Folks

  • My Dad was raised this way in Southeastern Ohio. He lived in similar circumstances until he moved away in 1958. They raised their own animals for meat, hunted and grew their own vegetables. These aren't lazy people!

  • Hmm...they can depict Eastern KY folk as stupid & ignorant living in poverty...but why do we never see documentaries of Hispanics living similar in West Texas & S. Houston?? Guess that wouldn't be "politically" correct. Every culture has its toxic & hard working families. I am proud to be from Eastern KY & have seen people living the hard life both there & in Houston.

  • @cgailfugate You are right,I agree with you,and I'm Mexican. My respects for the hard working people from any etnic group.

  • Prozac really you got to be fucking kidding me. No wander they dont have shit staying home eating prozac just get up off your ass and get a job, and dont tell me there is nothing that he can do.

  • 4:40 -5:30 EVERYONE should love and care for their mother in this manner.

  • When the video started, when she was hanging clothes...that reminded me of my mother doing the same thing everyday back in my country. I love it.

  • These women remind me of my Grand mother. She was a strong country woman. They are living the simple life. Yes, they do live on welfare but they are still working hard for a living. People will always put them down because they think they are better then them but really they are leading the life we should all be leading, living off the land.

  • Why is it so entertaining to see other people's life? rich, poor or average...

  • ew. some of these nasty hillbillies!

  • They definitely are hillbillies but it's so entertaining to watch these weirdos, you know they have to be inbred. It's like something out of the movie 'delilverance'. CRAZY!!!

  • Bring tears to my eyes it is a blessing that mommy is still alive after the abuse.

  • The man is right you have to sit there and shoot whom ever try to get anything from your garden. My grandmother said during the great depression that she had to do the same thing.

  • Bless those women :,(

  • Bill Frisell should get some credit for that amazing guitar you're hearing!!!!

    Amazing

  • They don't have running water but their homes are clean. Here in South Florida many welfare recipients have water but still have the filthiest houses. I work in property preservation & you wouldn't believe the filth & disgusting things I see. These people are super clean by comparison. I have found Q tips in the fridge, chicken meat & food in the bathrooms. Dirty underwear in the kitchen sink etc. These people make due with what they have.

  • Roast marshmellows, roast meat, risperdal, prozac and cigarettes and I suppose whisky. Do they eat ANYTHING their bodies need?

All these people look abused from childhood, none of them is radiant.

  • these beings will eat people...mfg

  • my fucking god..theyre grooming each other....and probably fucking.....my gawd...i'm sorry/////but that is just shocking........the most developed country in the world...are you kidding....my arse

  • I really admire that woman. She is strong.

  • So sad how that poor old woman had to take beating from an abusive drunk. Women in those days had not much of a choice like we do today and thank God for that!

  • this is how you work! I admire them and I was also been raised around the people who make the money from the earth directly, I can say it's just beautiful despite the hard workin life...

    Hugs from Europe

  • 9:03 this guy remembers me in the little guy from Wrong Turn :DDDD

  • These people wouldn't survive one day out in the real world. They're accustomed to this lifestyle, thus the reason why generation after generation stays in the same hollow. After 100 years, nothing's changed.

  • @09Chance How is their world not the real world? Looks pretty real to me.

  • And yet the Hollywood crowd looks down their nose at these people. I'm from Appalachia and I've had family members similar to these good folks.

  • This is a classic documentary. I saw this type of lifestyle first hand in Arkansas during the summers I spent at my Granny's house. Pictures weren't taken, they were made. Very simple wordage. I will say this, if I get to the point where anyone has to feed me, well, just let me go on to my glory.

  • Im sat here in England heart broken? see im in love with Edgars wife Rita, shes one hell of a girl? Im in England but i seen Edgar go in the barn and start fiddling with his fly zipper then he asked the old mountain goat for a kiss? I swear to that ,keep him in jail so that me and rita can make little hill billys in the long grass? IM ONE HANDSOME DUDE RITA? And my teeth dont grow down me back like edgars? What do you say to that ma little bak water sweetheart?

  • neil is hot

  • Someone fucked a sister or a Dad fucked a daughter or a Son and Mom had a kid or somethin....

  • @mikebrown1156 In your family? Sorry to hear that...

  • @memsinan hit too close to home there inbred????

Sorry bout that, didnt know that shit really happened, but hey maybe after you get running water and inside plumbing you can get some of that thurrr therapy thing and try and deal with your daddy telling you ---Son, this will only hurt the first few times!

  • @mikebrown1156 LOL.....your such a sad human being that you are just hilarious.....

  • @theHOUNDSofDOOM I couldn't agree more. At least these people - education or no education - are honest decent hardworking folk unlike the bloodsucking, soul destroying fuckers on Wall St.

  • @crapitoutjim

    word>!

  • @crapitoutjim No disagreement about Wall St but didn't they say these people were on government assistance too?

  • @crapitoutjim dude you have no clue what these people do behind closed doors... and believe me you dont wanna know... they are no different... how many of these people are molesting their kids and fucking their sisters? you cant tell me none...

  • @RcUniverseGuy What you say could very well be true, however how many so called 'normal' people are also doing the same 'molesting their kids and commiting incest with their sisters/brothers'. Surely that kind of behaviour isn't limited to mountain people. I went to a catholic grammar school for boys. I was taught by christian brothers who on a daily basis molested, sexually and physically abused boys from 11 through 14. All this in the name of christianity. They were 'normal' too. See part 2...

  • @RcUniverseGuy ...Part 2. Sorry to go on a bit of a rant there, it's just that I fucking hate the church, god, jesus, etc. I'm sure the kind of things, your talking about are not limited to just these people, they happens everywhere, in all factions of society. Every social group has it's foibels, errors, horrors etc. It just so happens that the mountain people fascinate, consequently we get both fact and fiction. Hope I haven't bored you. Thanks for your comment, peace. Cheers James

  • I read Iree died an December 2010. Sad as heck This woman worked her arse off everyday taking care of her sick mommie all the time. She was one heck of a matriarch for her family.Bass died a couple of years after this was made. I read that too..

  • i can't fathom being content living on wellfare. why not relocate to an area where there are more jobs? millions of people do it all the time.

  • @ixceix It takes money to relocate. It's a vicious cycle.

  • @ixceix

Um... they can't even afford another car! If you watch the whole thing, one kid actually does try to make it in the city, and literally doesn't have the capacity to function there. These people have been failed from the very beginning of their lives, and have no options to just up and move to a city with better jobs. The millions of people to whom you are referring are in much different situations!

  • @ixceix they would lose their land, they don't have an education so who will hire them? I live in South Florida. There are plenty of people on welfare & they keep having kids, don't work but yet they get their nails done, hair done, buy expensive shoes etc. They live in a city but they don't work. How are they any better then these people who love & are loyal to their families. I understand what your saying, it aggravates me too.

  • @tonlo92 that is that slave mentality. People that get their nails done and hair done are trying to live the American dream..but what they don't understand is it will never happen... to much media influence.

  • So... what would these people think of Barack Obama as a president?

  • I'm Asian american, and If I go over there, am I going to get shot?

  • @BestlikeMike As long as you treated them with respect. You would get respect in return.

  • I'd be cool to drink some beer and hang out around a campfire with Appalachia folk.

  • When I can't wipe my own ass I guess I'll be ready to die.

  • The anguish in Oma's (Iree's mother) eyes broke my heart. I just want to hug her and tell her everything will be alright.

  • these people suck...whine and bitch about not getting enough government assistance....i respect the old timers that made it off the land without uncle sam... to hell with uncle sam...hes only good for making slaves out of workers, and tossing money to the loafers...the stupidest system people could come up with...keep it up america...keep up the insanity and slavery....just get a big poster of an eagle in front of a flag, with some reference to liberty written on it...sing your songs..sheep

  • @longfootbuddy

Nobody here is whining, moron. These people, as much as you hate them, will always be better than you.

  • @Rouzhokuu dream on, moron

  • @MarkBTW

He takes prozac but not cuz he may be depressed or not, most people around will tell you they do take something, and it has nothing to do with their health either.

  • This family are certainly better people than any of the low life cunts they have in Wall Street. The only thing you can accuse 'em of is not being educated. But many of them seem to have their hearts on the right place.

  • Hate to be rude but I'd call the cops if I saw Edgar lurking around in my property.

  • Hate to be rude but Im sure id call the cops if Edgar was creepin around my propery.

  • this part breaks my ever lovin heart

  • You can tell they aren't happy, even if they are ignorant to the outside world. The guy takes prozac for God's sake.

  • @MarkBTW And I wonder who pays for his medication. My husband only had to do 3 tours in Iraq to get health insurance.....

  • @Karmen2010 Hey thicko, don't blame the ones you see as inferior to you but the fuckers in Wall St and in Washington .

  • They are poor and loving family .

  • Now, THIS is a REAL family. God Bless them all.

  • @dawnofthedeadling Thank you! Goodness, and thank you for posting the Children of the Mountains documentary! :)

  • @snickbick You're welcome. :)

  • @dawnofthedeadling not really. F god

  • They live a hard but fulfilling life. My family is from the mountains of Virginia and I would give up my life today to live up there. I love these people like family.

  • @81889697 may i ask, which mtns.in VA. im at the foot of the Blue ridge mtns. about on n. va. line about 3 miles,or less to the blue ridge parkway...cana,va. carroll co. God bless U & URS.

  • @toonful My family is from Whitetop Mountain and Mt. Rogers. My dad grew up in Konnarock, VA and moved up to the Mouth Of Wilson on Mt. Rogers. We still have a place there above the state park.

  • not even the good cameras of HBO could make these "things" look like mammals...

  • Is This documentary about the product and end result of Inbreeding?????

  • @416RIZZLE416 it's trying to show that even white people aren't as bad as nigger-bozos because whitey can at least grow a garden while shinteequa can't.

  • Comment removed

  • My dad is from Manchester KY. They should cut off all the welfare. Then you'd see crops plated EVERYWHERE. Instead, they drink, dig ginsang and collect moss.

My dad used to say that all the hillbillies that wanted to work, went to Detroit.

  • Comment removed

  • its just livin the old school way..aint nothin wrong with this..other then they could use a extra dollar ya know..but they seem content..

  • They have a very tight family.

    They've no electronic dodads

    to turn them into zombies.

    They grow their own food.

    They're family oriented.

    The women are hard working.

They have a better quality of life than

    the so called moneyed folk.

We all should go back to basics

    to be truly happy.

  • @frickadele well first step is get rid of your PC...lol..can you do this?

  • @ltuomela

    Easily

  • this is heartbreaking!

  • what a sweet dear mother and grandmother.

  • They seem to be a very close nit family. Kind and caring.

  • @bringyagrogalong

Work for a living some day. This is the kind of thing someone says who never worried about having food or work.

  • these people work hard, its all they got, i thnk they could use some help though, i bet they woulld love to send their kids to college and give them a chance at something too..........

all and all, charming people really

  • where ever there is sufering and pain you ll find heros and ppl who will give u the little they got. someone should show more of these ppl insted of the ppl doin drugs and crime.

  • God bless this woman ...feeding her momma...

    Hugs from Canada !

  • @azzuro79

yes this people have good hearts , well they just cant put them in a senior residence like people in modern towns and they have time enough to because they're home and dont need to go there and there .

  • @azzuro79 and god bless her momma

  • @stiggyh

So very true,God bless both of them..

  • @azzuro79 do you not find this hard to believe as a Canadian?

  • @lucy9359

No , I cant say I do..I find it very interesting..I wouldn't mind spending some time down there..I would love it, such a different way of living then that I am use to..So quiet , laid back..I need some of that in my life :)

  • @azzuro79 I do believe it I just meant in a sense of such deep poverty which we don't see here to often...

  • @lucy9359

Hi Lucy...Unfortunately poverty, exits everywhere, it does not discriminate even in so called " developed " countries..Case in point America... We may not always see it..But it is there... Canada included.

  • @azzuro79 i like how you put it so called developed countrries....poverty does have a point of reference for these people it is called corporate america....in this country too where you see poverty and the third world nations you can point to where you see greed the same ones who own the big corporations are runing the whole show all over the world....

  • @lucy9359 Could not agree more, well put !

  • i'm seeing 'very trendy retro kitchen units in london' aplenty!

  • Damn I wish I was sitting by the fire with those people right now

  • @bmb6 these poeple need to start letting people like me holiday on their mountain

  • Iree is a really great woman.

  • It makes me angry to hear them talking about being on welfare, yet they can afford cigarettes. I don't smoke, but I bet they could save about $300 a month just by quitting smoking.

  • "aint no disgrace getting put in jail, just staying there."

  • Does anyone know where Hardburly is in hazard combs ?

  • what a great family

  • I'm not trying to be mean...I just get these weird ideas sometimes, can't help it, and I laugh myself sick. I was just picturing how ridiculous it would be if over this footage the filmmakers had that dreadful Good Charlotte song playing, "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous."

I don't know why. It just came into my head and I laughed for, like, two full minutes.

  • The appreciation shown towards their mother is heartfelt and true... I love to see it. It almost makes me wish I was part of their family!!!

  • I'm from Rural Lincoln Co. Southern W.Va its that way around here, and i think it will always be. And i Love it, my family's been in this state for more than 300 year. The simple life is always better. It Aint always Easy but its the only choice we got, nary a one of us is born with money and most die with no money, Family is all we got, and i think that means more than all the money in the world.

  • If the government takes welfare, religion, and drugs away, then it has to face the one thing it does not want: groups of hungry people forced to organize themselves to make profound and progressive changes (not the hollow kind Obama lies about providing), often through violent means.

  • people don't like it or just want to make fun, but I am from Kentucky and it's not funny, and it's real. Help out people in your own country. Please.

  • why does that guy keep touching peoples hair and faces?

  • @Georgie2500

i do that all the time.

some people like touching things, why dont you try it sometime?

  • this documentary pisses me off

  • @benirvana1 dont watch it then der brain.

  • @benirvana1 -- Why??

  • @GenzoluvsKarl spot on

  • save some money and quit smoking....

  • @iamdiaperman haha your account is suspeneded

  • Did that man say he's on prozac and resperidol? What happened to his Bible? Man, the NWO has really destroyed America.

  • i think if you live on welfare for more then three years you should be neutured. if you cant support yourself then you cant support your thirty children.

  • Holy crap. They do alot of washing.

  • i bet they have good incest story's at the camp fire

  • These people have more useful knowledge than 10 phd's! If there was a breakdown in society, these people would hardly notice. Most of us would starve if we couldn't get food from a store. There are quite a few people worried about peak oil, I don't think this family would notice it, other than to say, "gas sure is goin up".

  • @christo930 sure they would notice, there welfare checks would stop coming. those people with 10 phds would stop giving away there money. stop hating on the people who support these digenerates.

  • @geoduct I just meant because they could live off of the land. I certainly wouldn't know how to skin and feather a chicken nor would most people.

  • @geoduct these what?

    :D

  • These people aren't all bad, especially the old grandmother. -Appalachian descendant

  • @bonerterrorist522- I live in this same area and love black people, as do the majority of family members. Not all people are like these, trust me. They bring shame to this area.

  • I completley agree with you these people do bring shame to the people in our area!!! I am nothing like that!!!Born and raised!!!

  • I am African American and I want to hike the Appalachian trail, but i fear i would not be afforded the same kindness as my fellow white American counterparts these people seem like those from every where else in "poor" America. they are just wealthy beyond belief in family values. but anyway if anyone out there in Youtube land knows that things have changed in Appalachia let me know.

  • It would be pretty cool if irees mother spoke during the video.

  • is it just me or do these folks look like there houses are pretty nicely furnished, not brand name but they are not living in shacks??!!

  • I love Pat! He's awesome!

  • Trust me when I sat these folks didn't vote for bombalone, if they voted at all.

You need to understand the history of the scotch & Irish who settled this area.

They have no work in these areas other than being as self sufficent as they can.

  • I know they have no other way to live, but it really is a shame that they're all on government aid. It causes them to be dependent on the government then, which is how Obama got voted into office...

  • id drink beer with them anyday

  • i bet you'll never hear,"guard your garden",again,have a good1

  • @bzagar1 that could lead to a sore arsehole

  • No wonder they're unhealthy, they're having cigarettes, for breakfast.

  • poverty is the friend of the rich--it is what they do to keep people with less down-starve them--yes; their is class seperation in america--just like other seperations

  • We call that "breaking up beans". When you buy a can of green beans, this process has already been done. This film was made about 25 mi. away from my house. I've helped my grandma "break up beans" many times when I was little. Those are wonderful memories. I've also watched her ring chicken's necks. Later we'd sit down for supper: crispy fried chicken, homemade buttermilk biscuits & brown country gravy, fried apples, scrambled eggs, etc.. It was so good I could hardly sit still & eat!

  • Ok this may seem like a silly question but when they are on the porch doing something with the beans, why are they taking the skins off of them?

  • They're not skinning them. They're just "snapping" them. In the south and midwest people refer to green beans as snap beans because of how you prepare them. Break off the ends, pull the vein off of both sides and snap the bean in two. :) Can them with pork and OMFG!!! sorry... yeah they're good. lol

  • @vindane78

We do that in the northeast too!! Yankees grow their own food as well.:)

  • i never could wait to can them. boil them up with some ham. my favorite meal is beans, rice, cabbage and cornbread.

  • I cried during the scene where she was feeding her mother. I wish more people took care of their elderly relatives that way instead of shoving them into old age homes leaving them at the mercy of understaffed buget-cut facilities and visiting them once a year.

  • @jenzeppelin I agree!

  • @jenzeppelin alot of the times it is the more affluent that do not care for their elders as they feel that they are"too busy

  • @marianpooran1 You're absolutely right. "Too busy." An inconvenience. The irony in that is those people have kids who will also be "too busy" for them when they get old. One day, when their big careers have come to and end and their minds and bodies start to slow down and they get older and possibly ill, they will look around and there won't be anyone there. Maybe then they will realize they wasted their lives prioritizing the wrong things.

  • @jenzeppelin yea well i hope i die before i get like that..and thats a fact..why keep livin..

  • @ltuomela Sadly, I feel the same way. Who wants to get old in such a world? Living forever just means more bills to pay, all while losing one's dignity. I know a woman who is spending thousands of month just for basic care in an old-aged facility. If her extended family didn't visit her daily, her diaper would only get changed once a day because the nurses are too busy. The whole thing is a disgrace. I'd rather go out with a bang while I still had my dignity and independence.

  • @jenzeppelin i agree 100 percent,God bless U & URS.

  • @toonful thank you... and may He bless yours as well...

  • wrong turn!

  • HA PROZAC , thank he US government and a college kid for this incestuous monstrosity.

  • These peope are descended from English and Scottish indentured servants who were brought to the South (and parts of the North) in the early days of the colonies.

They brought with them some bad habits; combativeness, casual drunkness, promiscuity, aversion to entrepreneurs and education, etc.

  • Mike O'Meara hipped me to this film. I think he said it reminded him of growing up in Connecticut.

  • Yeah...HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHA!

  • OK...wheres the still....there's GOT to be a still SOMEWHERE. Firewater, man.....firewater. Oh, and as I'm typing this the one guy comments that "daddy was an alcoholic...". So I WAS right. There IS a still somewheres.

  • i dont know why but i have the strangest these people like NASCAR.

  • How would they watch it? LOL

They probably don't know what it is.

  • I live less then 30min. from these people. Let me tell you that the people from the mountians are the proud people that can get all the chances in life you can. These people have just lived like this all there life. It is what they know. I finished high school and became a United States Marine. I have been to 12 countries and all over the US. There is no better place to live and raise children then in South Eastern KY.

  • @jmcollett55 That cry-baby kid needs to join the service and get the hell hell out of there. My dad is from Clay co. and mom is from Knox co. That kid could get a job in the deep mines if he can pass the drug test.

  • @awm4151 why would some kid join the service to go fight in some marxist jew war where he'll likely be killed?

and go work in the mines and get black lung?

you must be a fucking retard.
