Not showing up on Letterman didn't hurt McCain at all. In fact it would've been inappropriate for him to be laughing it up with Letterman while there's a major financial crisis.
It's the same reason Obama dropped out of SNL because of hurrican Ike two weeks ago.
Your right to an extent, it was more the fact it was last minute and that he lied about his movements (unless he didn't know he was going on another show). I couldn't stand McCain from the start. Now he's gone and messed with Dave. I watch Dave more than I do Jimmy, Leno, and anyone else that thinks they could compare to him. Letterman's show is a lighthearted celebrity talk show, it can in no way be compared to CBS News.
Whether McCain left for Washington immediately is irrelevant. Letterman should've been smart enough to understand the crisis and that McCain's priorities would drastically change because of it. Letterman is coming off like a bratty egomaniac.
