Many beginner goal keepers wouldn't realize the physics behind far throws. Curling the hand around the ball, then un-curling it during the throw adds momentum. You get to push the ball from more areas.

Many people don't realize that these details and precise techniques separate the wannabes from the pros. Helpful video.
