actually vmw will save your butt when your motherboard crashes. your Virtual machines will automatically migrate over when you have a hard drive crash or motherboard failure so you will not have any interruption to those workloads. the technology is called Vmotion, HA, and DRS.
ProxMox kick's ass. I have tested most of VSystems and I have all ready said goodbye to all our VMWare servers. It's Open Source and with it you know what is happening below the hood. And best of all, it's free.

But I'm really wondering how Vm is going to handle MS and Xen coming on strong from behind with about the same features..about.. but really competing on price.

Virtualization, a nice concept. But you still need hardware redundancy, because VMware won't save your ass when the motherboard of your server dies.
