Why did fools always sleep on Saafir but they luv cats like Aesop Rock? LOL, that's like Saafir son or somethin! His verse and Myka 9's verse at the end of Aceyalone's song "Knownots" are two in particular I always see cats hating on and both were dope, if unconventional.
And even if man wasn't prehensile...Yo, I remember watching this on The Box in the Bay Area in the mid 90's when I was in college. One of THE GREAT joints of all time. Fires up my forhymin' magnum just thinking about it.
Streetfighter soundtrack had UNDERGROUND CLASSICS startin with this one and the BUMS song, and PANDEMONIUM(pharcyde). I must stole this CD from Wherehouse like 5 times. HAHAHAHA! You young muphukkas don't remember the WHEREHOUSE. It was easy to rob them niggas!
Ist Avenue Crew Jones!!.....I'm from L.A. (AUDUBON & DORSEY)....we know the SAME PEOPLE'S AHMAD..and i remember this joint from back in the day.....Saafir.HAHAHA!!!!!
Ist Avenue Crew Jones!!.....I'm from L.A. (AUDUBON & DORSEY)....we know the SAME AHMAD..and i remember this joint from back in the day.....Saafir.HAHAHA!!!!!
lol I had no idea this song had a video. This video doesn't match the song at all. I can imagine some film student applying their school taught concepts to create something very confusing... in a not good way
Think that you can defeat the man that can't be beat, I do the breaststroke clown while you drown in 3 feet. Beep beep like robots on buck rodgers plus I bust 25th century rhymes that you decline, to battle any time had skills since I was nine.
Ahmad is currently at Stanford University on a full ride scholarship. He got a 4.0 at LBCC and than transfered a year ago to Stanford. Ahmad is a tight rapper and smart dude.
i was like 9 when i copped the street fighter vhs with the cd and spit along with this track and the pharcyde's pandemonium... now 14 years later still got mad love for said artists and non of my mates beleive this was the first hip hop i was introduced to... real as it comes!
Now this is hip-hop, 1996.....what a year it was? This is the type of video you'll never ever see on BET. The image quality of this video is really blurry, hope it gets digitally restored though. If Ras Kass never mentioned where he was from, I would definitely assume he is a NY rapper. Because he is original & has that NY essence. Other Cali rappers be rappin about capitalism, murder etc. Props to all 3 of these guys. an above mad track-----♫come widdit♫
To this day, Ahmad's verse on this song is one of the best verses ever spit. I used to rewind it over and over (remember rewinding?) before I'd even get to the other emcees, beasts in their own right.
Saw 4th Avenue Jones back in the day at HOB before I even knew Ahmad was in the band. Nice surprise.
Looking forward to the new Ahmad stuff this summer!
Oh shit... I'm so glad I've managed to find this joint =D
Just heard it on some online radio and tried to find it here but firstly it just wasn't here. Luckily I've decided to check out other tracks and finaly clicked my way up here =D
This was a hot underground slept-on joint. The only thing I really didn't care for was the way Saafir was flowing off beat and whatnot, but still a hot joint.
hey they did a b-side. one of the lyrics was "i come on the mic like fiber optics, so when u hear a pin drop...ping.. i drop classics." what is the name of that song? thanks
Somebody just played me that Brian Austin Green song, "Send Me," where he copied Ahmad's style completely. That stuff was ugly. I bet Ahmad was heated.
fucking classic! ras kass was a beast on this track. not taking anything away from saafir (Light Sleeper is a WC CLASSIC) or Ahmad (Back in the Days still makes me emotional)...
I agree... Even though I appreciate Ras Kass verse more now, Ahmad would properly be looked as the "rookie" in this line up considering he does not curse as much in general. However he destroyed the track "I bust 25th Century Rhymes so you decline" - I appreciate this more now hearing this 15 years later. Damm shame the current games does not focus too much on lyrical talent anymore.
@GTDyno This is true, I've listened to this song a bunch of times and always glazed over Saafir's verse but just listened for the first time and he schooled it.
Ahmad was no joke on the mic EVER!! His label pushed for that Back In The Day song to be his single. Dude was an amazing lyricist. Saafir has always been a favorite of mine, but this was not one of his crowing moments. Ras is ALWAYS dope. This song will always be a classic to me. When it came out, alot of people were sitting there scratching their heads. Music like this needs to come back.
Have been looking for this tune for over 15 years. This could come out now and destroy half of the wack on radio.
The joke thing was that in Word Up Magazine (at the time of release of the 1994 Streetfighter film), they advertised the Streefighter film as being wack, but the soundtrack being dope... LOL
All emcees on point...Ahmad ripped it....Rass Kass destroyed it...Saafir styled it on the metaphorical tip that went over everyone head...but if you broke it down...He was clownin....I miss 90's emcees...They just had waayyy more style and flow...far creative. Today's emcees ain't worth 2 pieces of shit...all ov'em combined.
Dokter your buggin out sun. this was one of the best songs on the album but i'm sayin how can you overlook nas's one on one, the bums street fight, hell even ice cube laced the mic on the soundtrack. this is the hardest soundtrack and most underrated in the history of mankind lol. that's alright though cause those that know appreciate it a lot more
Sometimes I think it's fun to imagine what it would be like if this type of song blew up and made stars of these artists. Imagine if Soul on Ice went multi-platinum (not that it was an especially great album musically, but conceptually/topically), the Juggaknots were as big a the Diplomats, Nas didn't have to make "Hate me now" and no one would ever dream of giving Master P, Puffy or Gucci Mane a mic... It eventually gets frustrating, but it's fun to dream sometimes.
A lot of cats never understood this song. Look, at the time, there was still a little west coast east coast division over who had real emcees. What they did here was present 3 west coast emcees coming with mastery along 3 different axes. Ahmad is first and shows breath control & flow. Ras is next with ill methaphors & flow. Last is Saafir with a birthed style and yep, flow.
Showing that west coast emcees could bring however.
The vid was a great interpretation of the song concept.
this song and the pharcyde song were the only songs i liked on the soundtrack. dont remember nor do i care for any of the other songs. ( just my opinion). THIS SONG IS THE SHIT. 3 OF SOME THE DOPEST MC'S ON THE WEST COAST
This was an extremely dope underground hit in 94. Ahmad verse is by far better than Ras Kas and Saafir. He was probably the least respected out of the three at the time.
I don't think Ahmad was disrespected but at that time it was all about being hard-core and undereground. Both Rass Kass and Saafir had that but Ahmad was kind of a Pop rapper with "Back in the Day". I remember thinking at the time "Why did these guys hook up?"
Noesnsf...I used to think the same thing. Back then I was like, "why they got Ahmad in the Vid?" But when I listen today, I can appreciate HIS lyrics a bit more, but I still have to say that, Rass Kass Came the Strongest...in terms of lyricisim.
I don't know about Ahmad being disrespected. That track "Back in the day" had mad play from coast to coast. He was a bigger name in many circles from that hit. That being said, I still think Ras and Saafir are better MCs and displayed it here.
Yep, this ain't even the only music video from the Street Fighter Soundtrack. There was a video for an MC Hammer song called "Straight To Your Feet" which had Deion Sanders singing on it too. Van Damme's all up in the video to, it's hilarious.

This was an extremely dope underground hit in 94. Ahmad verse is by far better than Ras Kas and Saafir. He was probably the least respected out of the three at the time.

The content was better in my opinion. Rass Kass had the better flow.

Always loved this track. Still have this on one of my cassette tapes from a mix show back in 93 or so. Ras and Saafir just killed it.

Yep, this ain't even the only music video from the Street Fighter Soundtrack. There was a video for an MC Hammer song called "Straight To Your Feet" which had Deion Sanders singing on it too. Van Damme's all up in the video to, it's hilarious.
