I enjoyed this clip. Classic kit with a very good display of jazz & rock playing. Bravo! I don't play professionally but I've been at it for over 30 years. I have some clips on here you might get a kick out of. My tribute to Buddy Rich. Anyway, it would be great to see a longer clip of your playing. I'm always learning from other drummers who know how to play.
I think Jimmy Page once said the he wanted the drums to breathe and be open to get the full sound out of them when they were recording their albums. Recording ina shoebox the has soundproofing does hinder the natural sound of the drums. Same with guitar amps which is why Bonhams' drums sound so full and why Pages' marshalls have a full sound as well thanks to the use of distant miking in he studio, I mean listen to When the Levee Breaks for example.
I've been playing for almost 25 years and just this year started playing with NO DAMPENING whatsoever, I wonder why it took me so long! tuning the kit for maximum openness nowadays and loving it!
@petecatz yep. most people dont understand rums. it to them is simpy something to bang. and damping means you can "bang".
if u dont dampen them, which is the BEST WAY TO LEARN, ten u hear each drums resonance in the room u r in (except in a pro studio where u have to set up the resonance SYNTHETICALLY) and when u get used to the resonance of particular halls/rooms then in a sense THAT is the instrument, those tones and ringing and musical sounds that resonate around the hall!
look, most drummers ARNT drummers, and HAD to use sound proofing and dampoing to hide the hideousness of their crap.
but DONT dampen, LEARN that each drum has a unique charachter and NOTE! yes A NOTE. if your kit is say 4 piece, then its a four key piano (so to speak,) 6 piece then, and so on.... not to be hidden but to be heard the way it is meant to be heard. many metal drummers were bad, and had to dampen their kits, they didnt know how to tune them.
@GrooveDrummin it's kinda funny how drummers talk shit to each other all the time......I mean I've always noticed that and I guess it's because it's in our nature to be that way....(but it's sad in my opinion) because I've never been that way and now I find myself doing the same thing too but only in self-defence. I've been to a few drum clinics in the past and noticed the animosaty in drummers faces that blew my mind away LOL! Guitar players don't do that kinda shit why do we do that? It's sad.
I know what you mean...seems to be like a sport. I find that if I share a little drumming advice to whoever is giving me a cold shoulder that it begins to "soften" them up a bit. I get "challenged" a lot by other drummers when visiting practice halls and sometimes it pisses me off because I'm there just for a good time. I will most definitely stay humble around these guys so as not to stir shit. Guitar players are a different bunch for sure....
@petecatz dude the drums are awesome all u need is some sound proofing and even with a cam recording it would sound 10 times better. with mics and a nice mix even better. but soundproofing goes aLLLLLOng way my friend
I am surpirsed you are not in a Black Sabbath Tribute band with that beautiful kit!! My dream kit is a Gretsch Champagne Glitter 4 piece 18" x 26" bass drum kit. I always wanted to have one of those oversized bass drums kit, but couldn't afford it because every time I try to save, some life event happens and the money goes away and not to Gretsch. If Ludwig makes a kit like this, then hell yeah, I would love to have it in a Silver Sparkle finish wrap. I'll keep on wishing and dreaming!Enjoy!
I saw a video of bonzo playing on jasons miniture kit and with out even looking I knew who it was. I was not dogin on your kit.(nice kit mate) I was not sure what year your kit was I am aware stainless steel were no longer made in 1980.I thought you had great chops and Sorry if I offended you.I posted cause I saw a nice kit.
Nice set, great sound for a rock band. I remember that sound from when I was a kid, listening to Led Zepplin. Part of the overwhelmingness comes from the room, too, I bet.
I love your set! Just in reference to some other comments, there a many excellent sets made by different manufacturers. Different strokes for different folks! I read one of the reasons John Bonham played such large vistalite sets and large symbols was for volume and projection. It sounds great dude.
WoW - I LIKE the really live sound!!! However, to play with a group, the kit is a little to Live. I play with minimal muffle but it must be used in a live setting. When I play in my group, which is every week, I stuff a pillow in the bass drum and use "dead ringers" on the toms. The top and floor tom shells are left open and my snare has as little muffle as I can. I do like your skill and sound.......
Ok, you idiots that say "this kit is too loud" need to realize these simple facts. For 1) There are no mics on the kit, so it's an unmixed natural "room sound". you are hearing a small camera mic in a loud situatuion, hense the moderate distortion. 2) Look at the room: Small practice space with no muffling (looks like painted drywall and grey painted floor). Theres nothing too muffle the sound. 3) These are big open sounding drums...the bass drums are at least 24". So now you have the facts.
I love Ludwig drums...you can play any style with them...from smooth soft jazz, to blues, to heavy metal...I love my Ludwig kit, always stays in great condition. I understand that the drums don't "overpower themselves" but most cameras can't take that level of volume...great kit man...absolutely awsome. Ludwig is the best!
I was endorsed by LUDWIG for 16 years in the 70's thru the 80's(see my authors link). petecatz & RtHinAZ make some good points on Ludwig. They did make, and I used, the great sounding "super sensitive 6 1/2" snare. I played on all my gigs, which I believe was the best sounding snare, certainly back then, and possible still. The Guitar player is correct about most of the great drummers from back then. Ludwig had a very agressive marketing department and went after many "high profile" drummers
I'm a guitar player from the 70's. I've played in many pro-bands. I've noticed that most, if not all the great drummers from the 60's,70's& 80's (especially the ones I played with) played Ludwig.
Studio or Live..it was Ludwig.(Maple shells 12ply)
Now it's DW. I guess when "SELMA"music took over Ludwig in the early 80's things went downhill for ludwig at that point. That's a shame and I'm sure there are drummers out there that would love a like new condition set of vintage LUDWIGS (Big Lugs).
@petecatz I agree. Can't really tell the tone .From the video sound quality . But, I had a similar kit but a natural maple anniversary edition kit ..Sounded balls to the walls .I loved it . But today i own a pearl and tama mixed kit .But still have my supersonic .. BONHAM FOR EVER .Buddy. .
i still have the first kit i bought and its a D2! i know they suck but i cant decide what set i should get. I dont know if i will like that specific set then i wasted money. Will i Ludwig be a good set? or a pearl export? or tama?
My first real kit was the Ludwig Quadra Plus in the classic white finish, and the blue, and olive badge! I loved those drums! Very nice playing as well ! Dear Gitchigoomi, the drums aren't too loud.
The mic just needs a -10db pad, and needs to be closer to the kit to not so much record "the room".

These drums are too loud. They actually overpower themselves in that you can't hear any real tone at all. I wouldn't use them. Sorry. No offense.
