I think that, today, mormons have the same propensity to be racist as the general population. No more, no less. However, not long ago, the official policy of the lds church was to not alllow blacks to hold the "priesthood" in their religion. I was raised Mormon and in very fact as soon as I was born placed between two of black babies for viewing. I only mention this being white because it is symbolic of how I was raised to love of all races exactly the same. It was my Mormon faith and mother that taught me to love all equally. To my shock and surprise I first experienced bigotry when I experienced that against my own faith from other so-called "Christian" members much later in life. There is no doctrine "between" Mormons and people of African descent. However, there was Mormon doctrine from 1848 until June 8th, 1978, that "banned" Black Mormons from the priesthood (which all male Mormons over 12 hold), and from worshiping in Mormon Temples.

I am a fan of Al Sharpton he does a lot of good for our african-american brothers. Sharpton came to Utah and apologized and went to a family home evening. He was raised Evangelical and so he was raised prejudiced, but he has since changed.

Hitchens on the other hand does nothing but distort religion!
