  • It's an average-size sweet potato ocarina, dunno why you would say huge. Anyways good job on the ocarina, I know how fun making them can be! :]

I couldn't tell if it was made from ceramic clay or not, and if it was I couldn't tell if it was already baked. Did you eventually glaze it? It might make the ocarina a tiiiiny bit more lower pitched, depending on how many coats of glaze you put on it, but other than that it's not a noticeable difference.

  • @BendiStraw1 I hadn't done anything with it because later on, I made another one that sounded far superior to this one. And thanks for the tips, that was the largest one I made at that point in time. I now have a contrabass which hits an F2 (give or take).

  • well why make an orcarina when o found some for 10 dollars?

  • @456weirdman Because $10 is a price I would pay for a very low-quality one. When I was making and selling them, they sounded far better than the hand-made Peruvian ocarinas, and I sold them for roughly the same price.

Plus, it's never a bad thing to get into the arts and crafts of life.

  • @OcarinaTycoon if you made it then you get get a 1 pennys worth of work

  • Hey guys I'm planning on making an ocarina. What clay do u recommend?

  • @Dangu3574 I recommend a Cone-10 stoneware for durability, or Cone 06 ceramic earthware for lower firing temperature.

  • I made 3 ocarinas, and any of these worked. Congratulations your one is working.

  • iにオカリナを作るように

    im just learning japanese

  • @TheLolzLizard I see. I don't know Japanese at all myself, unfortunately. I'm only experienced with English.

  • @TheLolzLizard i can tell. u used katakana and hiragana in the same sentence

  • @TheLolzLizard i would like to make a Ocarina?

  • iにオカリナを作るように

    祖ry意m銃stレアr人gじゃぱねせ

  • iにオカリナを作るように

  • @TheLolzLizard that's some terrible japanese there. almost as if it's been run through an online translator from engilsh.

  • tune it

  • awsome I actually want to make one myself but dont know how to=( ...... but yours is great I love it enjoy it alot k.

  • @TheGlisett1 I haven't had this in a while now. Over a year now...

  • you should paint it the color of the orcarina of time from zelda. it looks the same.

  • Hy , I have a problem.I've made an ocarina , everything was fine , i made the holes but I can't make the sound hole.I tried several times but I failed.Could ou show me how to make the sound hole please?

  • Maybe you can shorten the length of how hollow the holes are, if you know what i mean. But honestly you rock more than i ever will!!! Awesome job!

  • do you think you can show me how to make one???

    Is it modeling clay?

  • It was ceramic clay at that time.

I've honed (but not perfected) my abilities since this oc from around 2+ years ago

  • oh...

    where do you ceramic clay?

    and what about the mold?

  • @OcarinaTycoon this is amazing! oh and xBlade08Productionsx is a Baka! (im also leaning Japanese)

  • @LinkMaster19961 no not moldeling some kind of special quality oh i no how ta mak one maybe il post a vid

  • enseñame a hacerla...gracias

  • yyyyyy?????

  • Why what?

  • Oh mah god! That was cool! =D

  • I just made some new ones recently if you're interested in hearing what they sound like now, compared to this old 12-hole that hasn't been here in a year and a half. :)

  • Yea sure =)

  • wow it looks cool! oh and i have a problem i made two ocarinas but both have no sound can you help me plz

  • Did you make them right? Its very important to make the mouthpiece correct or else it wont work

  • show us how u built it! I want an ocarina so hard >>

  • You should paint it like a blimp.

  • Well, this ocarina is long-gone. I can no longer paint it.

  • It looks like the ron paul blimp

  • wow use a sponge man, that was all freaaking out jaja, and for the finger holes use a chromathic guitar afinator (afinador de guitarra cromatico), well i`m argentinian so figure out with google

  • what's it made of anyway?

  • Ceramic earthenware clay.

  • what are the sizes on the finger holes? i want to make one myself, and thats all i need to know

  • It depends on the size of the ocarina. I haven't had this one in quite some time now, but if the ocarina is smaller, the finger holes should be smaller just as well. It's all based on inner surface area being diminished by a particular size until the frequency matches natural or sharp notes.

  • omg! love the instrument!

  • thanks man:D

  • i did bro but it doesnt change anything and how to u tune it?

  • You should adjust the mouthpiece until you get the clearest sound possible.

tuning, just get a keyboard and discover the fundamental pitch, then find the major scale from there, and if you cut a hole but still sounds too low, make t slightly bigger. Do this will all the notes of the major scale for an octave, then test the sound to make sure it sounds correct.

  • You can also tune with a tuner. I use a tuner because I have one and don't have a keyboard.

  • the one i made is perfectly aligned but it just sounds like a whistle and the notes dont change:( wat should i do to get the notes to change?

  • Have tried punching holes in? Holes usually help. If you learn to tune an ocarina, it'll sound a little better than just a whistle.

  • Hey, I made an ocarina from some white ir dry clay using the guide from coop dog, but it only makes two sounds. Whoo and Whee. Is it because I only made it about 2 hours ago, or did I screw up?

  • that is the exact thing i did i thought it would work if it just dried but it should work even when its wet so you must have done somthing wrong

  • The sound is defined by how well the air strikes the edge of the lip, or the bevel. If you checked the alignment and saw either too much darkness from the lower half or too much light from the upper half, it may have been misaligned.

  • i want one can you make me one?

  • I'm currently working on perfecting the sound of my 12-hole ocarinas. I haven't quite gotten the sound down just yet. Until then, I sell 5-holes on Ebay that have much better sound than my 12-holes.

  • The last part sounded weird xD nice ocarina

  • hey ocarinatycoon check out my two new 12 holes i made

  • Does "countersinking" the holes improve the sound or volume? Can you play star trek music on it?

  • that was a really good ocarina! honestly it could be better but hey, its your first right? nothing is always perfect on your first try. XD anyways 4/5

  • DAMN! I didn't know you have been making ocarinas since last year!!!!!!!!1 WOW! So boosts my confidence in your ocarinas :D

  • It tooke me that long to get to where I am, and I still have a lot to learn about making ocarinas :)

  • can you make a ocarina out of air dry clay and will the ocarina be able to play

  • Yes, and yes. Air-dry clay is rather sturdy, but it dries rather quickly, so there's a short time frame between making ocarinas. I have to work fast enough to make it sound and look nice. the ocarina in this video was ceramic clay, not air-drying clay

  • If you had an art teacher and showed him/her that,she/he would probaly freak out, cuase that's very cool.

  • Hah, prolly. Thanks! I'm making them far better-looking and better-tuned these days. I have one on ebay right now. It's not doing so good, but I did provide a video on the ebay description. It sounds as good, if not better than, most of the ones on ebay!

  • I actually think your Ocarina is better than STL's.If you keep working on them, who knows what you can accomplish. You can probaly have your own business that might be better than STL's.

  • That's what I'm aiming for eventually! It would take me some years to actually get to that level of manufacture, but I'll keep it like I have: Not mass-produced, and always made from scratch. No slip casting for me!

I'll be having a soprano up after a couple weeks if this oc is successful enough.

  • Hope your successful.all you have to do is be patient in your work.I'll wait for that day too.

  • smash it

  • I'm gonna have to throw this video away, I don't even have the ocarina featured! Not for7 months, now...

  • peice of shit hahahaha

  • That's about the reason that I don't have this ocarina anymore.

  • try to play the sounds from zelda, ocarina of time. they should be easy to learn, simple melodys.

just if you like to play zelda.

  • Now only glazur it!

    :)

  • You are good. i made a ocarina but he have to soft cley...:, XD

  • looks like a joint.

  • Did anyone else notice that he took it away from the camera to "play" it?

    20 bucks says recorder.

  • You lose $20. Plus I don't have a recorder anymore. Or that ocarina. Nephew broke into my room and wreaked havoc.

  • guaranteed that's not a recorder. An ocarina has a distinct sound that couldn't be reproduced by a recorder.

  • See my newest video entitled "Two bass ocarinas." They sound hella better than this one does!

  • Okay maybe it is an ocarina, just not the one that he made. :P

It's just very suspicious to take it OFF CAMERA to play it lol

  • See my new "Two bass ocarinas" to see and hear some that I have made. They don't make recorders in vessel form :)

  • @theworden01 the recorder and ocarina are both simpler wind instruments, but i do agree that they should not be compared. in my opinion, the ocarina sounds a lot more beautiful and, not only that, but it can provide a large range of notes.

i used to play the recorder when i was like 6 xD

i think i still have one laying around somewhere

also, cheers to OP. that's an impressive ocarina

  • nice

  • you should paint it blue so that it can be the ocarina of time.

  • That ocarina was bomb. Nice work. For an ocarina made at a home(I'll just assume) that kicked ass dude. I think you would be right to try fixing the sound holes. But I'm not even the tiniest bit sure how to make an ocarina so my opinion means dick to you. Good work.

  • Yeah I made it myself. This one was tough and took me 2 hours to make and even longer to tune. I have some more that I made that have much better sound than this one.

  • Well great job dude.

  • nice one chap !

    great creativity u've got..

but with wat did u make it ?

    is tht wood ?

  • It's grey clay. My favorite clay thus far!

  • Looks like a dildo.

  • That's nice.

  • well, it is kinda well done you managed to construct a 12 hole without any mold, and the thing makes some sort of reasonable sound too, except for the fact it's a bit off-tone. But it's pretty well made without use of any guiding tool.

  • i think its good for youre first time makeing a 12 hole not perfect desighn but good

  • Thank you! this was the first ocarina hat I shaped by hand as well, not using a mold.

  • It looks uglier than a rotted potato! it sounds neeto and is playable! I need to make one now *gloom aura*

  • Whenever you start, I'd like to see and hear them! I wasn't afraid to let people know how terrible my first ocarinas sounded!

  • Full house quote!

    "You got it dude."

  • I didn't use a mold on this one. It was hand-shaped!

  • learn to play zelda

  • This ocarina is long gone. My girlfriend threw it in a fight some weeks back. But I liked how it sounded, I just keep it here. Seemy other videos for more ocarinas and some other songs!

  • needs more sound

  • Yup. I'm getting better at making them, though. You should check out my other hand-made ocarinas.

  • hey make a video of when you make one

  • I will when I can! Thanks for your interest!

  • hey that clay you use .. what tupe of clay did you use i really wanna know =)

  • Ceramic Cone 06 grey clay.

  • sounds pretty good for a handmade one

  • Thanks!

  • sounds pretty good for a handmade one

  • I thought it was an oboe?

  • haha devanp may go to hell it plays great

  • Oh and something else that may help. The hole's placement doesn't matter, it's the size/surface area they take that changes the sound. I don't remeber were I read this but i'm sure it's true.

  • Green Verdugo is a web site that I use as a guide for all my ocarinas. Thanks for the info though!

  • just a fyi, you can use a mold and still have it be hand made. so it using a mold helps you then do it =)

  • hey you keep practising, i like drawing an i get better every day ^^ u guess you can do the same, maybe you can use it as a hobby. all the things you mke by hand needs a lot of practising, dont look at youre destination, but enjoy the journey ^^ :D

that will make it more fun ^^

  • Hey, thanks for the advice! In fact, one of my subscriptions wants to buy one from me because he likes the sound. That's more opt for pushing harder to get to where I want to be! I made one with a round sound hole... It sounds very very nice.

  • My newest ocarina sounds great!

  • paint it purple and put a triforce symbol near the mouth piece and BINGO you have the ocarina of time lol

  • Maybe I should paint it something different.... Maybe red?

  • or black?

  • I painted mine green. ;) Nice job man. I couldnt get the high notes to play well on mine either.

  • I made a bass oc today. All the notes sound! WOO!

  • sounds like a dying cow on acid

  • Heh, I tried to make it a bass but it didn't work out... moo.

  • Merry Christmas!

  • let's go link!

  • Cool! Probably youve already made your decision what to do with it... I think you should keep it =D. It would be a waste to throw it away or sell it, I mean you made it, so...

  • Well, if I fill in the holes and let it dry, I could use it as a mold for future ocs. That wouldn't be a waste of anything, in that sense!

  • If you throw it away you can't use it as a mold :S

  • Take a razor blade or exacto knife and carve the sound holes a bit. Bevel the outside of the hole to lower the note, bevel the inside to raise the note. For example, if the tonic was C, and E was a little bit flat, carve the interior by sticking the blade in the hole and making the part of the blade in the hole scrape along the inside. I'll post a video soon. I'll also explain how to fix the voicing even though the ocarina is dry. Just as long as you haven't covered it in shellac, yet.

  • That sounds great. How long have you been making these for?

  • Oh, I don't know. Maybe about a week...in a half?

  • Oh, that's great! Well, just remember: Like all things, this takes practice! Which voicing shape do you use, rectangular or circle?

  • Why would you throw away such a lovely thing? I say keep it.

There is a section in Kenji Ogawa's website where you can show your home made ocarina. Maybe you could link this vid to there :-D

  • I could try that, but I looked and some of those that I saw kinda discouraged me. Many of those look and sound NICE...

  • "Tell me what you should think i do with it"..

    Play it. Duh.

  • Sell it or toss it in the trash? See the reason I ask is because the sound is not quite right, so I need to keep practicing the sound-hole design until I can get it to sound perfect. This is just a prototype 12-hole.

  • Well I thought keeping your prototypes would help you realise how to make it better :-)

Although the ocarina you have made is not quite right, you're getting closer and closer :-D

  • Yeah, probably. That would work. Still, though, any of these that i make which don't make sound correctly I'll throw away, and use a different voicing option adjustment.

I haven't made an ocarina since this one, so maybe after my molds are dry and fired, I can practice more and more on the voicing! Good idea you proposed, though.

  • Your sound is beautiful. You are right to concentrate on the holes to get the pitches exactly where they belong. That is no small task!

  • This realization of the difficulty of the sound hole was a big one. I didn't realize how much effort was put into that little sound hole until I tried to make it!

  • I think you should keep makin em and improving em. I'll probably have to buy one, lol

  • One of these days I'll be selling them, but only after I have made them look and sound a LOT better than they look and sound now ;)

    Thanks for watching and listening!

  • it looks ALOT better than your previous ocarinas, and it doesnt sound that bad either :)

  • Yeah, it does! The high notes don't register too well, so I have to fix that. Wit hthe instructions that I have followed, though, I should be able to get a great sound in the next few weeks. I'll probably sell one on eBay for like $10 or something like that once I fire them.

    Thanks for watching!

Rogers makes his own too, doesn't he?
