I'm wondering if the invaders are Mongolians (or any similar nomadic Turkish clan) since they are ones to use psychological scare tactics + they live on calvary as they're advantage in war. @iXomby I think the clue to who the Wendel really are lies in the little stone statue they call the Mother of the Wendel. It is a duplicate of the many such statues that have been found across Europe which date to the stone age. One famous example is called "the Venus of Willendorf". It represents a mother goddess, or earth goddess. My interpretation of the film has always been that the Wendel are a surviving remnant of those ancient people- cave men, if you will- and their beliefs.

The people of this village were LIES! They fended off hundreds of cavalry with farming tools and improvised spears. If I was with the wendol, I'd have just stayed home. Imagine if the villagers had all been given armor and iron spears. If they weren't so short on resources, they'd have never needed to summon Buliwyf in the first place.

Berserkers were the warriors who had pledged themselves to "the wild hunt" alongside Odin (Wotan/Woden/Othinn etc etc) and considered their lives forfit. One could say they were, during the 8th to 11th century (around that era they were mentioned most often) a religiously inspired suicidal warrior cult, viking mudjaheddin, even. You should read the Saga of Egil Skallargrimmson, It is in the Edda (really worth reading)

I've read it years ago, but as you say it's Egyptian and classical. There are, for whomever is interested, a great many saga,tales, accounts and stories to be found. Sindbad not being amongst the least of them. (it is NOT a childrens' storie, nor a cartoon, but perhaps the best account of Arab Sagic literature)

I can tell you one thing about berzerkers that will make you read more about them..they fought naked, wrapped in bear, or wolves skin, bite their shields, and growled like wild animals, they really scared people, they were so battle crazed, that they would jump out of viking boats screaming and roaring, before the boat got any close to land,sometimes they woild drown, they were suicidal warriors....

to tzepesh20: the "eaters of the dead" from what I heard were berserkers, people who kill bears with their bare hands and wear the pelts to make them look like monsters. They ate a special type of mushroom or herb before entering battle which made them high and they would attack anything they see, like rocks and trees and even other berserkers.
