What a way to die with a sword in your hand Next to your friends protecting your village better then lying in an hospital pumped full of morpine with tubes up your arse
I like the way the Norsemans fighting alongside with Eben save their words by not answering questions that the Arab can answer by himself, like at 0:33 ( how come your not in the tower --- bahh, why I am not in it (which he says in an obvious way).
Any way, great movie. Don't even why it's so underrated...
@bigT8768 not sure, but i think he calls him that because he has kinda taken him under his wing, also, he probably can't pronounce his full name. the others just call him Arab
This makes me want to find a time machine go back to Scandinavia circa 1000 AD join the vikings if they would allow it and become a God among them with all my 21 century knowledge.
@cwood4ever i don't think it would matter, they weren't stupid. Time Archaeology has proved this, a man who has ideas and concepts that are far ahead of their time don't always make them great world leaders. It takes courage and knowledge of the people
@jromanr01 Thats a very loose statement you make. In an age like this with superstition etc. If I brought a pack of cigarette lighters they would think i was a fire god who could make fire in rain, wind or any climate. And this is a very basic thing. Now if I brought Guns, helicopters, etc imagine the panic and worshiping that would happen.
I'm wondering if the invaders are Mongolians (or any similar nomadic Turkish clan) since they are ones to use psychological scare tactics + they live on calvary as they're advantage in war. And they are quite brutal too; slaughtering all that who oppose them the first time. They would even divert an entire river with trenches just so they can weaken a village or town population to starvation and thirst.
@iXomby I think the clue to who the Wendel really are lies in the little stone statue they call the Mother of the Wendel. It is a duplicate of the many such statues that have been found across Europe which date to the stone age. One famous example is called "the Venus of Willendorf". It represents a mother goddess, or earth goddess. My interpretation of the film has always been that the Wendel are a surviving remnant of those ancient people- cave men, if you will- and their beliefs.
These were the first real settlers of the New World. Italian Americans get pissed when they here stories of the Vikings living in North America before Columbus.......but why get pissed....it's the truth?
That's what I say whenever I see sexy ladies. It...it doesn't always produce the desired results, accented as it is by the gong I carry like a shield on my back.
Great scene when the Wendol come in burning mist or fog.Points out really good the meaning of barbaric behaviour and how terrifying Barbarians can be.Imagine you were Ahmed Ibn Fadlan standing on top of the wall and seeing this Terror arriving with the only goal to kill and eat you...
I wish I lived back in these times. Swords Chain Mail. A single guy back then could get shit done. You could go to the next village and people would be shocked.
@bLoodykNuklz No, I enjoy that there isn't all these movies to ruin it. I mean don't get me wrong I love these movies. Just that to much of a good thing can spoil you.
The people of this village were LIES! They fended off hundreds of cavalry with farming tools and improvised spears. If I was with the wendol, I'd have just stayed home. Imagine if the villagers had all been given armor and iron spears. If they weren't so short on resources, they'd have never needed to summon Buliwyf in the first place.
In the book this chapter title was named ''THE ATTACK OF THE GLOWWORM DRAGON KORGON'' check the book as well guys it's called ''EATERS OF THE DEAD '' by MICHAEL CRICHTON (the same guy who wrote congo ,jurassic park and others books that become movies hehe
So are they supposed to be Neanderthals? Isn't that what this whole story is about? Vikings coming in contact with a surviving relict of Neanderthals.
Berserkers were the warriors who had pledged themselves to "the wild hunt" alongside Odin (Wotan/Woden/Othinn etc etc) and considered their lives forfit. One could say they were, during the 8th to 11th century (around that era they were mentioned most often) a religiously inspired suicidal warrior cult, viking mudjaheddin, even. You should read the Saga of Egil Skallargrimmson, It is in the Edda (really worth reading)
If you like this movie, you'll love those stories!
I've read it years ago, but as you say it's Egyptian and classical. There are, for whomever is interested, a great many saga, tales, accounts and stories to be found. Sindbad not being amongst the least of them. (it is NOT a childrens' storie, nor a cartoon, but perhaps the best account of Arab Sagic literature)
Yes, Sindebad stories are part of a greater collection which is the One Thousand and One Nights and this is a truly among the best Arabic written gifts to humanity.
I can tell you one thing about berzerkers that will make you read more about them..they fought naked, wrapped in bear, or wolves skin, bite their shields, and growled like wild animals, they really scared people, they were so battle crazed, that they would jump out of viking boats screaming and roaring, before the boat got any close to land, sometimes they woild drown, they were suicidal warriors....
to tzepesh20: the "eaters of the dead" from what I heard were berserkers, people who kill bears with their bare hands and wear the pelts to make them look like monsters. They ate a special type of mushroom or herb before entering battle which made them high and they would attack anything they see, like rocks and trees and even other berserkers.
Thanks for replying. Still, of names, I heard Olaf, Buliwyf, Skald, Halga and as for the blonde guy (with the beard) who becomes friends with Ahmad, I think is name is Hrethel or something like that.
