  • This apparently dry but actually incisive description creates a tension and tautness that makes the reader forget about the author and plunge into the story. This objectivity is what is missing in much modern fiction, In addition it has the bristling intelligence and engagement the best narrative offers. How long before Ross Macdonald's novels re-achieve the high place they had in the early 1970's no one can say. But when that times comes, they will not be displaced.
