If you listen carefully, etta's texture in her voice almost sounds heartbroken and intimate, while beyonce's is a lot more flashy with her vibrato. That's the connect with older R&B songs, we sang what was heavy for us, we put in music, whether it was issues with racism or dealing with a broken heart or having fun. R&B has been so simplified with sampled bits until you really don't feel it anymore.

Now everyone, you do realize that Etta's version is NOT the original. I think it was Jackie Moore. Whoever, the first version I heard predated Etta's by a # of years. It got a lot of airplay on R&B stations. Etta is a favorite of mine, and I like Beyonce's portray and singing, but the ORIGINAL was sung by a country girl and the phrasing was more authentic than Etta's (IMHO) because Etta is not a country girl.
There is a version by a British blues band Chicken Shack...recorded in the UK also in 1969 after Etta, Ellington wrote the song....but it is said that gave co-credits to Billy Foster for tax purposes.
Etta came into this song when she went to visit Ellington Jordan in prison and was outlining the song, Etta fell in love with and wrote the rest of song and recorded it at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals Alabama......No one recorded or owned this song before her.

Everybody has a different opinion and it's normal! it depends of tastes we can't compare Etta and Beyonce it's two different times. To my mind, Beyonce sings with more emotion it seems that she lived what she sings and I prefer her voice, Etta has a different ring and when I listen to Beyonce's version, I'm more attentive.
Etta is a "great" singer in the ranks of Aretha, Patti, Gladys, etc. In my opinion, her years of drug addiction and resulting lifestyle cost her a lot of recogntion and fame. Maybe now, she'll finallly get the recognition her calibre of talent deserves, albeit through the backdoor, so to speak.

I love Etta but Kathi McDonald is hands down the best version. Kathi is back up singer on some of rock & rolls greatest albums including Rolling Stones, Ike & Tina Turner, Big Brother, Quicksilver, Long John, Leon Russell. Kathi is an amazing nearly unknown talent.

This is a great song, sung by a great woman, but....I love how Be'yonce portrayed and sang this song. She put a hell of a spin on it! Cadillac Records was a great movie!

Beyonce's version is pretty good actully, and the voice is not THAT different, except the pitch in their voice, and I hate that kind of (Beyonce) music (It meens I love old music) though I'm 15.

I love this song so much. Just a few months ago we were in music class. A girl in my 5th grade class asked the music teacher if we could listen to this song since we were already on you tube learning about the blues. And ever since I've fell in love with this song. Who cares that I'm only a 5th grader I can still love the blues, right?

Now everyone, you do realize that Etta's version is NOT the original. I think it was Jackie Moore. Whoever, the first version I heard predated Etta's by a # of years. It got a lot of airplay on R&B stations. Etta is a favorite of mine, and I like Beyonce's portray and singing, but the ORIGINAL was sung by a country girl and the phrasing was more authentic than Etta's (IMHO) because Etta is not a country girl.

There is a version by a British blues band Chicken Shack...recorded in the UK also in 1969 after Etta, Ellington wrote the song....but it is said that gave co-credits to Billy Foster for tax purposes.
Etta came into this song when she went to visit Ellington Jordan in prison and was outlining the song, Etta fell in love with and wrote the rest of song and recorded it at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals Alabama......No one recorded or owned this song before her.

There is also a record that she performed it in 1967 but in the copyright records it was published 1969.
So it may have been her that you heard and just didn't recognize the voice I guess.
A copyright and the day that you record and publish it are sometimes different.
Like me I wrote and recorded a song back in 1996, but if you search my registration and publish date of the song it shows 2006 release, because that is when I released it not recorded and performed it.

Everybody has a different opinion and it's normal! it depends of tastes we can't compare Etta and Beyonce it's two different times. To my mind, Beyonce sings with more emotion it seems that she lived what she sings and I prefer her voice, Etta has a different ring and when I listen to Beyonce's version, I'm more attentive.

Etta is a "great" singer in the ranks of Aretha, Patti, Gladys, etc. In my opinion, her years of drug addiction and resulting lifestyle cost her a lot of recogntion and fame. Maybe now, she'll finallly get the recognition her calibre of talent deserves, albeit through the backdoor, so to speak.

Music is a funny thing, it travels in a cycle. This 1969 song that failed to make the top-40 charts is now making its comeback. Here in 2009 people are starting to realize how talented Ms Peaches really was and more so of that Beyonce movie portrayal. There are even disputes as to who was better. Well sometimes the student outshines the teacher but we are better for it because those great sounds of yesteryear just come rolling back for a new generation to enjoy. What say you in you tube land!!

Very eloquently written, I would disagree in the inplication that people are just starting to realize Etta's talent, she has a life time achievement award from the Grammies, Rock and Roll hall fame inductee since the 80's. I Rather Go Blind was a R&B hit when it was released and did well on the R&B charts (top 10). Beyonce is not a Etta student, she played her but is not student of her vocal style, you want an Etta student look to Janis Joplin, now Pearl truly was a pupil of Jamesetta Hawkins.

I love Etta but Kathi McDonald is hands down the best version. Kathi is back up singer on some of rock & rolls greatest albums including Rolling Stones, Ike & Tina Turner, Big Brother, Quicksilver, Long John, Leon Russell. Kathi is an amazing nearly unknown talent.

I wasnt familiar with Kathi until i read ur post. I admit that she is good but i dont agree that she is the BEST version of this song. Tho she's very soulful I didnt quite get the gritty emotion that I got from Etta. Beyonce was good too but in a more showy way...I didnt BELIEVE that she'd rather go blind lol but thanks for introducing me to kathi

I have 100% Respect for Etta. I try to put a plug in for Kathi McDonald whenever I can, thats all. Kathi desreves superstar status. Her vocals on Quicksiver's "Gypsy Lights" are some of my favorite of all time.
