On synthetic lanes, they don't actually use wood; rather, they use some sort of plastic (I'm not entirely sure what exactly is used for synthetic).

not to mention the mental aspect of the game, constant decision making of ball choices, targets, hand positions, ball speed, trying to keep calm and level headed. and the pressure of having to throw all three strikes in the tenth frame to win the championship. the pressure is unreal. these guys bowl 50-60 games a week, not counting the practice squads the day before the tournament starts

Endurance alone is not enough to justify being called an athlete. Mental aspects of any game has nothing to do with being an athlete, athleticism is purely physical, not mental. That's not to say you don't have to have a strong mental ability for what you are doing, but it is in no way a part of athleticism.
