As a life-long fan of Callas, I still enjoy listening to other people's renditions of Habanera, but am often surprised, even saddened that those other performances are quickly dismissed as 'not being as good as Callas' - its about the song not the singer.
@methuselus Well said. So many people on you tube hear one singer and get obsessed with one singer be it Callas or Pavarotti. They cheat themselves out of experiencing different voices and different interpretations and much of the music - nobody can sing everything. Most importantly, opera is meant to be experienced in the theaters, and operatic voices - unamplified. BTW - from what I've heard on you tube Rinat Shaham is the best Carmen today (although I do like Garanca whom I heard live).
@ppp3mmm You could say that about lots of singers, but why bother making the comparison? What could possibly be gained from that? Hell, Callas never even performed Carmen (she sung some of the arias in recital, but she never performed the whole thing) Shaham isn't trying to be Callas - their voices are worlds apart, Personally, i don't even like Callas that much - don't get me wrong, she was great in some roles, but her recordings aren't a go-to solution for every single opera out there.
Hola, hijos de todo el maiz, miren si sera mas que justa esta vidorria, el hecho de que exista en esta noble vida, la señora, Rinat Shaham, es en verdad maravilloso, que voz, que interpretacion, que señora.
She sings and acts the part perfectly. And may I say that she is a beautiful woman, which is only appropriate if one is playing a leading role in a drama about a woman men would kill for.
@blacksultan85 a red rose symbolizes "love." :) Here is a better definition and may make you understand more as to why it is important in this opera: Red roses are the traditional symbol for love and romance, and a time-honored way to say "I love you." The red rose has long symbolized beauty and perfection.
@operagirl81 thank you so much for telling me that COOL i ask someone on you tube she ignore me but i knew i'd get someone here to explain to me because those red roses on any lady they always look top notch and PERFECT DIVAS that's a turn on for me LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haha Joshua Kohl is gonna play as Don Jose in this opera At lake george opera in florida. He's pretty cool, all the girls say he's hot. Im like wtf he's a guy singing
@chengsiong0903 The exact lyrics aren't too important, but the general gist of it is that just prior to singing this aria, all the men around her asked her when she'd love them, and she proceeds to sing this aria whose opening line is "love is like a bird, it is flighty and hard to catch, but never stays around very long" (I'm paraphrasing). The aria basically introduces Carmen as a fem-fatal who uses her good looks to get men to do what she wants and then leaves them.
I Hope to Hear her at the Met on a Brdcst, they would do well to audition her. I would think if she sounds like this in the big house she will be a huge success at the Met.
The more I hear this lady the more I like what I hear, hope she goes far and stays with us by singing the right roles for her fine Mezzo. BRAVA from Chicago!
I saw an amazing French indie movie of "Carmen". It blue me away. At the end when he is asked if he had the choice to go back and change his life, would he? Just as he is about to be excecuted he says "Of course not". Wow.
Sorry. i can't remember. It was a long time ago that I saw it. It might have been Spanish not French, but I think it was French. It was modern though, it would have been made in the 2000s sometime. It was named "Carmen".
I looked it up. It was Spanish. The book is French which is what Bizet's opera is based on. I didn't remember it being released here in France. But they have French language, Basque and Spanish. I'll check it out if I can find it. Thanks. Sounds interesting.
First of all, opera, not play. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE! However, this is not the complete Habanera. This is only the second verse and onward, which explains why I didn't understand what she was saying at first because the first line of the song is "L'amore est un oiseu rebelle,"

She isn't the best carmen I mean she sings really good but she isn't stunning with her looks like she's supposed to but she is amazing at the singing part I could never do that!
Yes to me and it seems many others Rinat Shaham is the top 'Carmen' at present .
I had not looked at this video for a long time, so I am astonished that my comment above which I made 11 months ago has had 165 thumbs up, very nice that people agreed that she is so wonderful in this role , so once again I will say ''Bravo Rinat Shaham'' !!
I like your comment, I think its pretty accurate. Also, 7 (and more) out of 10 times Carmen is a soprano, which is not nice, since this role is written for a mezzo.
Habanera was typical song when Cuba was a part Spain Colonial before 1898. The Habanera was imported to Spain for people was in Cuba at the last moment, The Habaneras are typical song in Spain in differents areas, Andalucia, Levante and Catalunya also, it´s very nice when we sing some habaneras near the beach and we drink coffe & run
I find it equally absurd, embarrassing and funny that so many asked if this was in English. I mean, a child could hear that it was not English and most adults, even with no language skills, should be able to pick up that it is French and know, in fact, that CARMEN, although written in French by Bizet, a Frenchman, takes place in Spain. Wow are we in the US have a shrinking intellect, yet no one seems to care. This version was just amazing, emotional, acted well and sung superbly. Brava!
