I think some people fail to realize the whole purpose of performing music.. Most of the time, its not even supposed to sound -exactly- the same. That's what makes each version and performance unique. If it sounded the same, you might as well be playing the same exact piece over and over. Its those little mistakes, or in this case 'differences' that make many re-editions, such as this one, separate from a copy. Kind of like humanity itself, if you think about it. :P
@Saisashi I agree with everything you said. It actually leaves me a little cold whenever I go to one of these and the performance sounds exactly the same as the original. I don't want it to sound drastically different but I want it to be different enough from the original to make the experience worthwhile. I want the performers to put their personalities/emotions/etc. into the performance and I want to be able to hear it in the music. Thank you for your well thought out comment :)

it's a good attempt i quite enjoyed it but you can't be that def not to hear how bad the tempo is off between both piano and violin at first but with that said i want say they are very talented and i think if they had more practice together could nail it very easily
no the song was made for the anime. the song was created/based off a german poem named elfenlied by Eduard Mörike. elfen lied is German and means " Elf song ", Elfenlied as one word would be the correct form.

In some anime, like Ghost in the Shell, the arrangement of traditional music and orchestra has never been done on that scale before. I advice you to go look up some of its music live - you will see the incredible scope of the music you think is "weird and bad" to play at a concert.
I might not be an experienced musician to point the little mistakes ( if they were any ) but i think it was an amazing and flawless performance by two very talented musicians!
It seems to me that this version was too... bold. Rather than being the soft, sad and sole melting harmony the original version was, it seems that this version is too aggressive and it is hard to loose yourself in it. Good never the less.

Both musicians are very good at their respective instruments. That includes Marcello. They both played their parts very well and while it may not have been a perfect performance the majority of the errors would pass virtually unnoticed if you didn't take the time to judge them. I'm relatively certain that nearly every person that complained lacks the experience required to do better. Without paying attention to errors the performance was one I would have liked to have seen in person.
@Traece Thanks for the well thought out reply. I'd like to point out that Marcello was a last minute replacement because the original pianist backed out. He had to learn everything in less than a day. With that in mind, I think he performed very well. It might not sound exactly like the original (which could be the reason for peoples' complaints) but it doesn't always have to be exactly the same for me to enjoy it.

The violin sang and cried. Beautiful performance on the violinist's part. The pianist was clumsy and he was playing the entire wrong chord progressions in some places though, which was a little disappointing.
Was a nicely played by the violin. I did not like the way the piano tried to harmonize with the violin though. The selection of notes used to accompany the violin was quite poor, limiting the potential emotions that come out of the song. If played well by all instruments, this song can express incredible emotions of sadness, nostalgia and even happiness at parts, I did not feel those with this video because I was overwhelmed by the number of dissonant notes. Sorry, I'd give violin a 5 though.
The violin owned that piano dude. The piano was way to fast, and ruined the violin's tempo. It just didn't flow with my ears and did not capture the emotion; it is supposed to be sad and slow.

Those who think that pianist is too fast, you are all wrong. That's how fast you play it on piano coz it's just 3 min long and rest is just repeartuare and other additions. When you play piano+violin duo, you play piano much faster than violin or it just sounds horrible

I know this is late, and I'm not trying to argue anything since his playing in here was a bit 'weak', but in his defense--on the Fields of Hope video the uploader commented that Marcello had less than 12 hours to prepare for this since the original pianist couldn't make it. </3 So for that short amount of time, I say he's pretty impressive!

The pianist seems to be zoned out or not listening to the violinist... they are not in sync. It still remains to be beautiful, though.

Those who think that pianist is too fast, you are all wrong. That's how fast you play it on piano coz it's just 3 min long and rest is just repeartuare and other additions. When you play piano+violin duo, you play piano much faster than violin or it just sounds horrible

Wow.The violinist is just awesome,she perfectly reproduce the rhytm of the song and in such a smooth,splendid way.But I felt like the pianist was getting in her way,kinda obstacling her instead of supporting her performance.

The pianist was delaying the rhythm of the music. Even Miss Ayako, trying to help, he could not play properly.

the piano is too overpowering. the violin is supposed to take the lead with piano accompaniment.
Overall it was ok but the piano player was weak.

I know this is late, and I'm not trying to argue anything since his playing in here was a bit 'weak', but in his defense--on the Fields of Hope video the uploader commented that Marcello had less than 12 hours to prepare for this since the original pianist couldn't make it. </3 So for that short amount of time, I say he's pretty impressive!

@HolyCow3000 It was made specifcally for the anime, but the song itself uses a lot of Biblical references.
I'll probably need extra confirmation on that second part, since I've never read a Bible in my life. But just from the lyrics, it's kinda obvious they're referencing some form of God.
