@dressrehearsalrags Every musician should create music to help themselves also, it's a great way to clear your conscience and just to get stuff off your chest, and when people can relate to the songs it just makes things so much better :)
@dressrehearsalrags uhmmm I don't think that's quite right "everything he did was for us" . everything he did was true to himself and that's why it resonates with everyone.
For the last few years for me. His music is so multi-layered in its meaning. He took it upon himself to revolutionize the emotional/spiritual consciousness of humanity. Son of sam, pretty marry k, tomorrow tomorrow and independence day. Together they comprise his mission statement. What a weight to carry. Evidently he couldn't handle it, as he had convinced himself it was meant to be, but he must have decided that he had failed, and it wasn't meant to be after all.
Before the song he seems to play after this, "Easy Way Out," he makes a comment about screwing up this one. But I really like the ending of just his voice without the guitar. There's something about it that brings the whole thing together.
He certainly could have played it. He could have just played the chords. The album version actually does a kind of fade out thing like that so it was probably intentional. If it was a screw-up then it wouldn't have been the first time he's done so live.
Does anyone know what kind of guitar he's using? Or a general description...
I wish we could ask him, though i suspect he just wanted a little different spin on the song - he often did that at his live performances. Plus he was on his best form i've ever seen at this gig. Anyhow, i guess it's all a little academic.
@jlaw666 earlier in this show he says he hasn't played live in a while and I think he said he was nervous that's why he stopped playing.... if you've watched a lot of his shows you would know that it happens to elliott on occasion
@jlaw666 try singing strumming and playing a melody on top of that live. not many artists would try to do that live because even with a lot of practice it still requires a lot of coordination.
this was never a stab at the artist it just seems like he forgot the chords, anyways it's just those 4 chords like dressehearsarag said so it's well within his reach to play it
I love his music and yes it's a loss that he is no longer making music on this planet, but on a totally superficial note- the way he sings "reverse" was just one of th emost incredible things that gives me goosebumps...
I love love love this song. I hope one day I'll write a song like this. One can dream, right?

wonder if he just improvised that ending or if he messed up and just decided to roll with it.. either way it's brilliant.

Love you Elliot Smith, Sleep Well! A Huge sentiment in such a simple, beautiful song!

We need more spiritual warriors like Elliott. He was so driven and determined. Everything he did was for us. None of it for himself. Amazing man.

From what I remember the recorded version ends with only vocals like that. They actually go on for longer, I think.

I wonder if stopping the guitar was intended...or if he stopped because he lost his bearings and knew he'd mess up if he tried to recover them

Probably the most perfect example of being damaged and hopeful at the same time. Maybe not lyrically but definitely in the vocals. Miss you Elliott

Nah - he did mess up - you can hear him play a chord of dead notes, then the wrong chord, and then he looks at his guitar and just continues singing.
