@j7512 I'm not sure of the version used in this game, but do a Google search for "Dwarf Fortress - Mike Mayday's graphical edition" and you will find a good one. There is a list of them on the DF wiki too.

@Bronimin you could only find it if you had those save files.. this game randomly generates a map at the start and then makes history for it and then you play it.. so you would have to get the map from whoevers dwarf fortress made the map.. at least thats my understanding of it

its not bad, the ascii, and it was preety great for its time. but now with everything so modern and 3d, im like "How'd those goblins get around the wall!" and i go up 1 z level, and i see there was a beutiful hill leading right into my fortress.

Because of this games amazing ascii graphics, we can really tell how exciting and "incredibly fun" this was.....

Not saying that graphics mean diddly squat, but in such a complex game, SOME graphics would make it oh so much better.

@staphinfection Half the battle is understanding how the visual display works. Even with tile sets I find myself confused.

We'll be seeing games this complex with graphics in the near future methinks. It's not too long of a ride.

Not likely. Dwarf Fortress' complexity is actually a throwback to oldschool PC gaming. Game developers these days wouldn't touch a design this complex with a ten foot pole. But we can dream.

In the mean time, I don't mind the uglyness of the ascii near as much as the draconian interface. This game needs a serious injection of user friendly. That doesn't stop me from loving the game, though.

Dwarf Fortress is indeed easy to pick up and play and is as beautiful as the latest Unreal Engine 3 release at least, and anyone who doesn't think as such should go code it up themselves or else there can't be any truth in their words.

In all seriousness, Toady knows the UI isn't great and I'm sure it is on his list of things to improve.

@Hndshks Your criticism is invalid and in turn hurtful when it's a free game in Alpha and you're bitching on a public non-Dwarf Fortress forum. And for another thing, the UI works great. I don't know what your problem is, but the UI has only improved drastically. But thanks for your input.

@sharpiedyourwhat My criticism is neither invalid or hurtful. For one thing, I praised the hell out of the game in my comment. I love Dwarf Fortress, and I want everybody to play it. Nevertheless, tons of people have said that they don't dig the UI and I agreed. Why? Not because I have anything against the game. I agreed because it is TRUE. The UI is rough.

By the bye, the biggest barrier of entry to the game *remains* the UI, not any comments on a "public non-Dwarf Fortress forum".
