Let's be honest though. Surely the planet killer from TOS "Doomsday Machine" can't be the first time someone's envisioned a device capable of destroying an entire planet.

The destruction of an entire planet is the ultimate doomsday scenario for a civilization, and certainly it would take a very large weapon to be able to perform such a task -- likely sent from another world, so it would be in space near the planet.

Star fleet did with plenty of other races to back it up but the Xindi sphere of destrution was nearly impenitrable from an attack from the outside i think the Enterprise fired at least 10-12 photons at it and didnt leave a scratch, pretty much the whole fleet was destroyed/disabled before the weapon reached earth, i know i saw the whole series twice :P

The effect of sound for the explosion (and all other scenes such as spaceship battles) are merely there for effect on the audience. It would be rather boring to watch Earth exploding silently, and sound quality is what drives fans to watch continuously.
