This helped me out great.. I was thinking of adding patches onto my leather jacket and I didn't know how to.. but now i do lol.. This helped me out a lot thanks man.
Great vid. So it's pretty much the needle and not the machine to sew leather. I am looking to reupholsering my auto seats in Leather and Faux Suede. What machine are you using and some recomendations?
I agree! However, The machine he's using looks similar to mine, not exactly the same, but I notice that the plastic bobbin cover and the picture on it is identical to mine-my machine is an Elna 6200. His looks even simpler and I suspect it's a Elna or a Janome (who is now also Elna). Certainly not a heavy duty leather sewing machine. Apparently, most standard sewing machine can sew soft to medium thickness leather.
@22364014 Will the machine sew through 4 layers of the leather? There will always be areas where two seams must be sewn together. An old White Rotary treadle sewing machine will sew through as much as you can get under the presser foot. I've used old treadles for heavy canvas and had no problem. They are all metal, simple and you can service them yourself.
when I did this, the puncture marks from the stitches acted as perferation marks & the leather started to rip (it was a purse I made) was it cause I used the wrong thread maybe?
Good job dude!

For sewing leather ... check out an old Singer 401
(401a). All steel, gear driven. No belts or wheels to slip[ when sewing leather.

moomoo- I would bet your stitch length is too short. You want to set the machine for the least number of stitches per inch.
