These are just frozen green peas from the freezer section of the frozen food aisle. Keep them frozen, or at least as cold as you can. The better quality ones work better. The cheap ones fall off easier.
Great point on using a lighter leader then main line. I wish I lived by the ocean, must be nice to fish there. You guys use any lures in that area? How deep is it off those rocks?
hey did you cook the peas...and is there any other good lures and bait that we can use...well i surf fish if u can give me any info about surf fishin...thanks
hi, I'm an italian fisher and for us it's very common fish with telescopic rods (I have 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 meters long rods made by DAIWA , and I would like to give you a trip......use the maggot (the withe worm of the fly ) as bait and you will see how it works!!!!!! p.s. let me know if it work!!!!
I use a heavy mailnline. The leader is 8 lb test. I have also used 4 pound for fishing for opaleye in Kings Harbor inside where they are very bite shy.
Fishing around rocks a lot the heavier line is good as you will get nicks and abrasions in your mainline. I would recommend that you change or at least inspect your mainline every season at the minimum. I check mine every trip to amke sure I dont lose the big one.
This is a good technique that works. It may take a couple times but you can do it to once you learn what to look for in a place to fish and how to present. If it isnt working move to a new spot. Dont commit all day to a place that isnt producing. Either change tactics or move over to another spot. Sooner or later you will learn what is productive and what isnt. Some dayts however no matter what you do you wont catch anything.
Not necessarily. I have had times in freshwater that I catch a bluegill every 5 seconds. Sometimes I catch nothing. Its called fishing, not catching lol. I go because I like being outdoors. It just so happens that I usually catch fish when I go. However new spots take some times ot figure out sometime.
Very informative video. I do have a question about your gear. You were using an 18ft rod I believe. My friend has a similar rod he purchased from a Japanese dealer in NY. He has both a 18ft and 21 ft rod. Assuming you are affiliated with the Ogeechee Outdoors site, I didn't see the 18ft rod carried on your site.
If possible, I would like some more info on the rod and possibly advice on the size reels you would pair them with (ounce-size).
I have downsized a little as the 18 foot rod wasnt suitable for toher styles of fishing that I do. After this video I started using a 12 foot rod at the same place. To a degree it is personal preference. I would not use a 7 foot rod there, but a 12 foot rod is about the shortest Id use at this place, or most other places in general. However I have used a 15 foot rod to throw steel out to schools of bonita.
A rod and reel should be balanced regardless of what size they are. A long rod has a lot of end weight. So a heavier reel is sometimes necessary. I like to tape weight to the butt if it is very off balance. I have been fishing so long and so much that holding it on the bottom of my arm to let the butt rest there is second nature. Even if it isnt balanced it doesnt bother me unless it is very out of balance like my 30 foot rod is. Id have to use a giant reel to balance that thing.
I caught all the fish on green peas. Frozen, cold, peas. Hot or warm peas fall off too easily. They wer caught on spaded Japanese style hooks (no hole for an eye to thread line onto). The knot is snelled onto the shank of the hook. However eyed hooks will work. A circle hook works best in my opinion for catching opaleye especially in the corner of their mouth. Opaleye are very sneaky. They spit the pea hull out and the hook snags them.
Anywhere that you can find that looks like that should hold opals or some of the other fish taht I caught that day. If you are one that learns bite patterns quickly you should be able to catch a good amount of fish anywhere. Withthe opaleye its a matter of knowing when to tighten the line. Rocks, kelp, and deeper water access is perfect for opals. You can catcht them outside of kelp paddys in the open water too.
This same basic style will work wherever fish hang around structure or congregate. A different bait may work, or differnt size hook may be in order. I have used this for persh, pile perch, sargo, and others. Onthe east coast this will work for sheephead with crickets. Yes, crickets. On those black and white sheephead thaty hang around pilings.
Those are really a bit too big around. They work but the bigger opaleye feel that float. You can get thinner ones if you look around. I have some wooden floats that are thin to use with a single split shot. If you want some email me or message me. They normally sell for 5 dollars. They have a spring betweent he plastic hi vis stem and the wooden float body. Theres little resisitance so the opaleye takes it in easier and you can see it better.
I normally sell the floats on teh website. If you email me and tell me what you are looking for I can get them to you. They arent on the site right now but I will add them.
Green peas? I dont know why, but they work in Cali. What part do you live in on the east coast? I lived in the southeast, and shrimp live or parts, cooked table shrimp, fiddler crabs, oysters, clams, mussels, peices of cut fish, maybe even green peas would work. I havent tried them in the east coast. The same technique will work, just change up your bait until you find what works. That or ask around.
The one I am using inthis video was 130 dollars several years ago. There are cheaper ones available. After I caught some sheephead and bass I couldnt get up ove rthe rocks without endangering myself I went to a 12 foot glass telescopic rod that had a little more backbone.
On the east coast I have caught Atlantic sheephead (different from pacific) on fiddler crabs using the same tackle. Croaker, whiting, and other stuff too. I caught a 3 1/2 foot leopard shark at Twin Harbor off the rocks, using green peas.
This is in Palos Verdes but I have fished like this from Ventura down to San Diego, also in the San Fran area, Oregon, and Washington state. Obviously I didnt cat sheephead and opaleye in the northern range but perch and sargo are all teh way up and down. Something is there to be caught. Int he northern range sand shrimp work for bait. I havent had much luck in the northern states with green peas, only in SoCal.
This is at Palos Verdes. There is also a lighthouse park at the end of hawthorne and you take a left and walk down the steps to the beach. Theres a lot of rocks to fish off of there.
@OgeecheeOutdoors i know its an old post but wanted to know "light house park" are u talking about "point vicente interpretive center" just wanted to make sure if i was at the right spot, thats the only area i know that there's a light house there also i liked your vid man helped alot

Any of the jetties in long beach that go to deeper water work. The more waves the less opaleye you catch usually. Opals dont like turbid water.
