In 1979 President Jimmy Carter granted amnesty to all draft dodgers. It is believed that of some 30,000 such dodgers, about half returned. Of the rest, most made their homes in Canada. Deserters on the other hand were mostly returned since desertion was a crime even there. In fact most deserters from the Iraq conflict were also returned.
@AlfredDolly So following the country blindly into a war where it's unjust is okay? To kill despite not thinking it's right. Muhammad Ali didn't go so you're saying he should have been thrown in jail too. He (being Muslim) preached peace and kindness despite the differences in race and religion. TRUE Islam preaches just that, but you get some bigots that decide to mangle it for their own agendas. Christianity and all other groups do the same. You sir are just misguided.
@ejr23 The hole in your argument comes down to who determines if a battle is unjust? Troops in the field may not be fully informed of the reasons they are ordered to fight. We can't just have the troops taking it upon themselves to second guess every order with the limited information they may have. Ali is a poor example because he tried to make the argument about his own racial issues, even though he was arrested for failing to report for the draft.
@AlfredDolly Vietnam was (as still is) a touchy subject to this very day. You can also say that the Iraq War is also like Vietnam. I personally think we should have finished off Saddam back in 91. At least then we had far more allies and it wasn't very controversial.
@AlfredDolly As long as there is oil, American troops will be told to die for it. Look at Mexico...Over 50,000 dead over drug wars that spill over and kill Americans. Are there any American troops down there "protecting our freedom"??? Nope. Because they don't sell us oil!
@freewill51 I agree that America fights wars over oil. But we do need a supply of oil to the US for the country to run each day. It's not like it is something frivolous to fight a war over.
@MrWill99313 Fuck Nixon. Vietnam had nothing to do with America's freedom, nor did the draft. Freedom includes the right NOT to kill. David represents the hero. Nixon died in shame. He remains there forever. Guess you missed the message on the Bunker's wreath at the end.
@MrWill99313 As MooPotPie said, freedom and liberty include the right not to kill. Of course our country's "freedom" is minimal anyway. Now that the NDAA has been signed it's non-existent
This aired before Pres. Jimmy carter pardoned the draft resisters (dodgers?) in Januart 1977. It was a very powerful episode since the country was still split over the war (even though it was ended by then). Offcially in '73 and in reality in '75. I love the fact that the 'old veteran' has no problem breaking bread with the draft resister. Powerful. Well acted and well said.
@SeanMBryans Agreed. Brilliant episode of a brilliant show. Reading the comments here it is clear that this country's split over that war (and every war) persists to this day.
"Carroll O'Connor delivers an angry line during the taping as: 'I don't wanna talk about that Goddamned war no more!' However, the network ordered that O'Connor dub over the audio before broadcast, so that the line is changed to 'I don't wanna talk about that rotten damn war no more!' while the original line is clearly visible on the actor's lips.
CBS did not object three years earlier...when O'Connor delivered Archie's reply as: "'Knock that off, God dammit!'"
@rofflemows2 Well, I guess with the Christmas season there was no way they would allow 'god dammed' to air! This was quite an episode, and the character of David gave a great performance I think.
18:35 is Probably Carol O'Connors best performance ever in a TV show.
STRONG Performance....
I remember my mother crying almost everyday before I left for school in 1971 because she was watching the news. One day I said, " Mom, why are you crying?"
She said," do you see those boxes coming off the Plane on TV?
Inside each one of those boxes is the body of a person who is only a few years older than your brother and if this war continues I am afraid they will take him too." RIP to ALL VETS
i miss these types of shows, this one and "goodtimes" because back then they really educated the viewers as well as entertain them.
sitcoms today are not funny, just silly, stupid, and have no depth nor substance to them. everything is about trying to get a damn man and sexual undertones.
these shows made you think. thank God for youtube.
this was the best, most intense, episode. I saw it as a kid and it blew me away then. When Archie shouts "I ain't talking about that goddamm, rotten war no more.." well, there it was-it was unanimous-the whole country knew the vietnam war was wrong...even Archie Bunker.
"GD" might have been a slip-up from the actor and not in the script. and then re-dubbed or something later.
or they decided after it originally aired that they didn't like it.
I don't completly understand Archie. all the time he's talkin' about God and how he's the GOD and all but then he goes and takes God's name in vain....tohugh as of the moment I haven't heard him say more than "Jeez"
@MichaelHansenFUN What's allowed on TV and what's not seems to fluctuate back and forth over the course of several years. So it's quite possible that because the first episode (in which "God Damn" was allowed) aired in 1971, by the time this episode came out in 1976, times had changed enough in those 5 years that they no longer allowed that phrase. Just a guess. It's also possible that the producers were trying to push the envelope a little more at the onset of the series.
It's too bad Hollywoodland™ doesn't have the balls to do something this real (for the time).
