  • Uh Ausitin, It's still in 4/4. Play the simple intro to 'Money' by Pink Floyd. That's in 5/4 or some odd meter timing. That'll get your point across much better and clearer.

  • Ok, after watching this my conclusion is that this guy's a comedian. A musical comedian, because what he does is actually quite difficult- playing a 4/4 groove and counting 5/4 over it, and then playing a 5/4 groove and counting 4/4 over it. However not quite as funny as the original 5/4 jazz video

    Mr. McBride is not without talent. He can bounce a golf ball on the face of an iron. I doubt I could do that. To hear 5/4 timing, listen to Brubecks' Take 5. Look up "Quintuple meter" on wikipedia.

    PS: when counting, every number gets the same amount of time.

  • 5 is 1+4 or 2+3 or 3+2 or 4+1 or 1+3+1. A true 5 can be accomplished by superimposition of 2 to 5 of the 5 patterns available. For best results --- I recommend polar pattern: (e.g. 2+3 combined with 3+2). [This could also be considered poly-metric, as the emphasis of the beat is common in one area but differing in two areas]

  • It doesn't matter if you count your 4/4 as 5/4 or vice versa - the riff you play clearly states 4/4. Perhaps with a band strongly playing 5 you could bluff rhythmic displacement but frankly you would never notate that riff in 5 in isolation.
