Thank you Jonas for the very emotional performance. Your voice is very beautiful, never pinched or strained, but full of tenderness and your technique is truly great. You are one of the best. What a joy to hear and see you. Take care of yourself as we want to have you around for many more years to come.
what a wonderful artist ! his French is perfect, no word is lost, and he delivers with such an intensity, that he never is boring, while so many others are ... especially in operas so often performed. Bravo. Every opera sung by Jonas sounds new and interesting ! What a performance !
Having seen him in the house many times (including this production) I can say that what carries in the house for him is his upper register. He can put a significant amount of sound energy into those top notes. His darker lower voice doesn't always carry as well, but this is to be expected. The C he sings here almost comes apart towards its end, but like a skilled pro he recovers it well. Seeing him a week later his C was fine, although it required all of his physical effort.
If you hear a bariton, you're probably not hearing the center of the voice because the coperto, in the passing of the ff to pp you can hear what isn't the harmonics in flux but the real color (every harmonic is a plus and natural to the instrument)
oh my god, not someone who sounds different!! Stone him, beat him, run him out of town!!!
He sounds awesome, and it sounds full in the house, all of you who say the voice won't carry are just wrong. IF you don't like the tone, that is fine, taste is always personal, but it does carry and is in my opinion awesome.
Folks. .you all seem to have forgotten or are too young to never have known open-throat relaxed larynx singing. He is not singing overly darkened, over-produced, overestimated, or overambitious. He simply is singing with all of voice through a marvelously open throat and low larynx. unlike what we have been hearing from tenors of the last 30 years. When the highway between the chest and larynx is open the color is that of "chest" ! Give the man a break and learn from him, an amazing TENOR!
He does a great interpretation of this so difficult aria!!, probably it is better for a ligther voice, but boy he delibers each note withgreat talent and sentiment. I respect those who prefer a more lyrical tenor, but...Bravooo Kaufmann!!!
@reduxmisc He IS a Baritone who poses as tenor. Just being able to sing in that register and having (or "hitting" as some heatens would say) the high notes does not a tenor make. Just like being able to reach low notes wouldnt make a tenor into a baritone or a bass, even though some tenors often DO have good low notes. But It's much more about the "natural" platform of the voice. Where it sits instinctively.
Expanding range (top AND bottom) is a technical feat. But you cant change your natural voice identity anymore than you can change the colour of your eyes. No matter what fancy tinted lenses you wear. N'est-ce-pas?
Overproduced, overdarkened, overestimated, overambitious and far too far back in the throat methinks. IMHO But boy does he look spiffing! Wish all tenors were that good-looking.
@reduxmisc I agree, at 1st i thought there was something wrong with my sound , this can't be ... a baritone singing a Tenor aria? I listened to Nicolai Gedda sing the same aria just before this and it sounded like this guy sang the aria at least a whole tone down .
If so he did a marvelous job, hey if Domingo could transpose all the aria's down why can't this guy. Kaufmann could be the next Domingo .
@hightenor123 I said it "sounded like a tone lower " i didn't say in actuality it is transposed lower. It's a normal reaction after listening to a pure Lyric Tenor
just before J.K . This man J.K has already had a nodule removed
from his chest and vocal problems trying to push his natural baritone voice up to sing Tenor roles, i say he will be singing baritone with-in the next 5 years if he totally doesn't blow out his voice before then. The High C was pathetic.
No disrespect.. Do you think that a nodule in his chest has anything to do with his voice... you are thinking of nodules on his vocal cords. That comment makes no sense whatsoever. He had a pre-cancerous lump in his chest dude. IF he had a vocal node removed surgically he would not be singing 3 weeks after at his NY recital, he would have to take a month off from speaking. As far as the longevity of his voice, we'll see, as far as the quality of his voice, as I said, its a matter of opinion.
@hightenor123 My apology , the nodule removed from the chest has nothing to do with his vocal cords but i did a little research on this guy and it's a noted fact he's had a lot of vocal problems . No disrespect either but he just doesn't sound like a tenor , even James McCracken R.I.P. who probably had the deepest tenor i"ve ever heard sounded more like a tenor & McCracken's High C's put's Kaufman in the minor leagues. It's obvious J,K is pushing and forcing his high C .
@Etnalleb I have to agree with you. It is a strange sound, especially when he sings in Italian and French. I have seen him in Tosca, La Traviata, Carmen and I couple of others and have heard labored and pushed sound. Plus the most important part of live performance is missing and that is emotion. I never see honest characterization and depth.

@Etnalleb Luser! Could you explain what are emotions? And maybe you can linked some video clip where is some ''better'' character than Kaufmann? And buy tickets to some live performance and see Kaufmann LIVE, dude!

Bravo!Great voice!I love duets with his participation yet. Perhaps those who criticize will be able to sing better, But I doubt it.

At least he covers correctly, but he overdarkens everything and is given to crooning.

Yes he's got the notes but it just doesn't sound right. I prefer a Tenor who sounds like a Tenor
