I wonder if I can use 3m 996 with Nagra 4.2 for recording? (I mean 7" reels). Can I calibrate Nagra 4.2 to use this tape? No way to use another RtR, because I'll record on location.
@Vladislaw81 Well, from what I am aware of, Ampex made a few specialized types of tape specifically for Nagra machines. For example, 408 and 480. So, I don't know if you'll be able to use just any kind of tape, regardless of recalibration.
I dont have a reel to reel but i would like to get one. I was wondering if most of the old tapes are ruined or if they survived? There are alot on ebay but i am not sure if they would still work.
Nice tape machine :) I just love the way that a good RTR sounds and that can be even heard through the compressed audio here on YT. Btw, when it was made? I couldn't find any information on these machines.
@Steveymotions No, I didn't. 3M 996 is a very modern tape formula, relatively speaking, does not suffer from the sticky/shed syndrome caused by a breakdown of the binder. If you buy 996 tape and it DOES have a sticky/shed problem, the seller misrepresented what he sold you.
The 3m gold 996 reels are very popular on ebay, going for an average of about $40 empty. I'll never understand why 3m puts labels on them that look like shi*. As much as they cost, couldn't they silkscreen something on?
I have the same machine in the BII version. Easy to calibrate and sound decent, but the transport's a bit of a brute. Not as elegant handling tape as a Tascam 32 I sold some years back. My ReVox A77mk1 shits all over both of them soundwise ;)
OK, I've finally got a question for you...would you feel like donating those pretty 3M reels to me? LOL, just kidding. I got my deck a while back, just waiting for my NAB adaptors to show up. My deck is in great condition so I'm a happy camper.
Thanks. Lately, I have been looking at eBay for open reel decks. I went on Otari's website and could barely find info. I ended up calling their number, and I asked about the model they make, and it retails from almost 6 grand. The retailer name they gave me did not have it listed. If you or anybody else who reads this message knows or ever finds out where there are some retailers that sell the Otari deck, just let me know. Getting one on ebay would be easier. The tapes are also becoming scarce.
Nice tape.

How did you get the orange reels instead of gold? Or is that just the tint of the video?

@staffcurtis It's just the tint of the video.

Did you have to bake the 996 tape before using it?

Nice 5050. I should be the owner of a BII in a day or two if everything works out. I can't wait. :D

Great piece of machinery and selection of music. I really like that song.

I was wondering if you knew where one could purchase an Otari reel to reel machine.
iabhornc 3 years ago
Ebay would probably be your most reliable source.

Otari still makes the mx5050. It sells for just over $1500.00
You can get it with half-track or quarter-track heads. I'm buying one tomorrow...

@iabhornc you could probably call up a local radio station and they'll GIVE it to you. That's what I did! :)
