Many people hated it when Rush went alternative, thinking theyve sold out. Now how can that be, when they pretty much influenced a whole bunch of younger alternative bands with their pre-existing sound? In a way, they were "alternative" to begin with.
Alex Lifeson channeling Stone Gossard and Mike McCready. Probably my two favorite bands of all time, so this song is about as perfect as it gets for me.
lmao i bet one night geddy was piss drunk off his ass with lifeson and geddy said to alex "hey alex, i bet you $100 you can't write a grunge song like the rest of these fucks nowadays." and alex was like "oh yeah?" and this song was the result. good song tho :)
If you ask me, Rush is aging like fine wine. They're just getting better and better. Rather than blasting us with metal (which they're much better at than most), they now choose to make their music much more melodic and focus more on harmonies instead of power. Sure, the sound is different (not necessarily better or worse), but I find it to be more musically advanced which I enjoy.
Really, if anything, their sound has gotten more jazzy. Keep in mind- they're not a metal band. They're Prog rock.
Oh nobody would. Hell, I bet Lifeson and Peart are afraid of pissed-off Geddy. Mainly because he doesn't seem like the type to ever get pissed off, so if by some crazy chance he does, it'd be crazy.
The Reason I like Rush is because i luv Zeppelin and Proto Metal and i first heard working man and thought it was Zeppelin. I like there heavy metal stuff Xanadu, X-1, Anthem and i think that MOving Pictures is The perfect balance betwween Hard and Progressive rock but around Grace Under Pressure that sound got old.
I dont like much of their new stuff, I bought Snakes and Arrows and vapor trails a while ago, I like them but their nothing compared to Hemispheres or Grace Under Pressure.
I completely agree with you. Although I respect Rush enormously for being able to change with time, their last great album was Grace Under Pressure, and I would maybe listen to an arguement for Power Windows. But the stuff they do today, its not by any means bad, its just not my kind of music. And though its not what Id like them to be doing, they dont owe a thing to me, and theyve given me 10 of my favorite albums of all time.
I give Rush all the credit in the world for still being around, but in their progressive days, they were just so amazing. It gets me kinda sad on their newer live albums when theyll tear through a classic on Signals or Permanent Waves, and then play something off of Snakes and Arrows. But the important thing is that Rush is still together and happy, making music, something that other bands cant come close to. Rush is a gift to music.
Amen, they should stand as a template that through decades of changing genres of music and personal turmoils, they kept evolving continuing to make great music and always reinvent themselves. And yet they still go on. They still are my favorite band now just as much at 34 as they were when i was 12. They are inspirational and the music is testament to that.
pretty much everything after Moving Pictures is not as great in my eye. I greatly prefer the 70's hard rock stuff. I grow weary of synthesizers VERY fast. The tried to go back to hard rock in the 90's, but something was missing. I DO like Snakes and Arrows, because they didn't used a shitload of synth, and i really like Far Cry, and Malignant Narc, and Workin' Them Angels.
Its not so much that I can't stand the synth because to me, Signals is just as amazing as Moving Pictures. I just feel that Rush lost their edge in the type of music they were playing. For me, Grace Under Pressure was their last good album as a whole and all that's good off Power Windows. They just seemed to get less powerful after that. And their 90's/2000's stuff, well Im just not into that genre. But its great that you like Snakes and Arrows, though the genre theyve taken on is not my taste
the reason i like snakes and arrows is because i tend to judge albums based simply on how many songs on it i like, not the overall sound. i really appreciate the lack of synth on it, though ill admit the overall sound of it is not their best work.
but i beg to differ i say it is some of their best sounds, but it is all opinion, for instance my dad cant stand Sawyer i love it tho! im a real huge fan of Alex so that has to with it a bit ;)
I remember the feedback almost bringing a tear to my eye when I first heard this. Alex almost remembered how to play rock guitar! And yes I agree, this album is RUSH's best sounding production next to Moving Pictures.
Gotta love this song. I punched through a two inch thick wall the first time I listened to this song. Not to mention the message is worth listening to.
Who is that dude sitting in the chair all tied up? He looks like he's one of the dudes from Skinny Puppy. Alright song, but everyone else that I know as a Rush fan hates it.
Bather in artificial fake spitted original Philochat, looks like a labyrinth clovering up the volatile knight, only their hunger for bathwater gives them thirston for freewill
Thanks for putting the videos from Rush's Atlantic years. It seems that the music networks ignored them during that time, because I never seen the videos during the time, and even today, VH1 Classic seems to only play their stuff from the Mercury years. Thanks again!
All this talk is really making me want to hear some Lakeside Park, or some Bastille Day on this upcoming tour. August 24th, at the Verison Wireless Ampitheatre in St. Louis, Missouri, I AM FUCKING THERE!
I like how the video is in the cliche early 90's "grunge" style. They're not Temple of the Dog, so it looks really contrived and awkward. But Rush rules, either way.
hell yeah zappatx!!! his new tone is not workin and fenders are good instruments so i dunno why he messed it up so badly. ricks are where its at and geddy could rock it back in the day
I cant get in with the new RUSH so much. No melody but just seems like they are mailing it in. Too over produced. And why is it when bands mature the bass player drifts away from the Rickenbacker?
Geddy played a rick from "Rush" the album to "Signals" were he changed to a headless bass-forgot the name, then to a Wal, then his now famous Jazz Bass, and the fretless he has.
I don't think thats a Rick on Perminant waves (doesn't sound like one to me) There is a pick of Ged playing the Jazz bass on the inside of my Moving pictures CD. I think I have a book with an interview of Ged from Guitar Player mag where we talks about switching to the Jazz around the time of Moving Pictures.
its on youtube that he says he plays Tom Sawyer with the Jazz bass. songs like Limelight and Red Barchetta is played with the Rick! It's on youtube and very interesting, check it out!
In The Book Contents Under Pressure it said Geddy had played a J-bass and a rick throughout 1968-82ish and he has used the rick more than J Bass. Although you are pretty good to admit to be wrong but its ok.
He stopped using the rick around the beginning of the 80s. He started using Jbass and Steinberger around that time. He pulled out the Rick for A Passage to Bangkok in The SAnA Tour though.
Most of his stuff is J-Bass, but you can always tell when he's using the Ric. Rics have a very distinctive punchy quality to them, very unique to them.
Very good song but the seemed to have done what many other classic rock did around that time: Grunge-fying their sound to appeal more to kids of that day and age.
I thought the they made a great album with "Counterparts" , i think Alex wanted to rock some more. I hope they get back to that heavy, edgier sound like they did with this one.
I remember reading that Alex and Geddy would get into fist fights over the keyboards on the album because Alex wanted to do all the colorful keyboard arrangemnts on guitar.
Its pretty good. Animate is way better I LOVE that song. And from having every Rush album its on my top 10 favorite songs and even more amazing they made it in 1993 lol. Pretty decent album, but Rush has made things 10 times better, but i mean for there ages and making something like this..its amazing. Check out anything before Signals and its a masterpiece, but Grace Under Pressure Power Windows are equally amazing but..some others do not think so.

eww... this song sucks. the verses sound cool, but then of course they have to come in with the dorky "uplifting" chorus. this is why rush fans are dorks. i do like quite a few of their songs though, just not the bad ones!
haha I'm a huge Rush fan, but your post made me laugh. "This is why rush fans are dorks". However, most rock/pop songs have the 'uplifing' chorus - this is typically the hook of the song; not much you can do about that.
It's better to have a "dorky" uplifting chorus than a dorky depressing chorus. Go listen to your Nirvana and My Chemical Romance...leave the good music for us Rush fans!
Anyway, this is a really cool video. I kept hearing all this great stuff about "Test For Echo" and I actually enjoyed "Counterparts" )which I heard a lot of bad comments about a great deal more. Good album, good song.
I really liked the direction they were going with on the album "Counterparts". One can assume they were tired of over-emphasizing synthesisers in the musical arrangement after "Roll the Bones".

This is a song about a guy in a chair, on a post, on a building, in the city, I don't know, but it is.

Wow, Neil is something else. Musically charismatic in every way. ^_^

RUSH is absolutely BRILLIANT! Their songs have it all... melody, counterpoise, tension, release, etc. I'm 44 years young, and have been a fan since 1976 or so. LONG LIVE RUSH!!!
