It is always come in handy when you make your linework large, I use the same thing with everthing and after its finished and I'm going to post it on DA i shrink it

you use a neutral warm/cool low intensity color for the background to see the true contrast of your colors, otherwise if you use white, it overpowers your eyes and you sometimes get the wrong colors.
