I think his every performance is great. I think the main problem is that they didn't give him enough freedom to do it his way and that they didn't let him direct his movies. All the movies we love were directed by him and at MGM ha wasn't able to do that anymore.
Actually, although Buster did dance in 'The Cook', it was Arbuckle who performed this dance in the two-reeler. I'm sure the dance was a mix of their ideas! :)
Buster's dance was known as the "Princess Salome Dance"--It is performed by Roscoe Arbuckle in the Arbuckle/Keaton short called the Cook, with a string of sausage links standing in for the snake. You can also see Buster perform this dance in another Arbuckle/Keaton short, "backstage"
a facinating fragment even though the MGM rot is already in evidence. reportedly, keaton did a similar routine entertaining the troops during his WWI hitch and while this is essential viewing, it seems a bit forced and unfocussed. the series of leaps at the end are breathtaking, though! the saps at head office never knew what to do with him. he's all but thrown away during the second bit. still, buster is forever buster! thanks for the post!
I agree with you. Matter fact, he was one of victims of Talkies, as well as Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, and many more. How Great was Gloria Swanson in the movie "Sunset Boulevard" (1950), she'd well expressed their situation.
Buster was also a lousy businessman. He let his wife run amok with his money (reportedly spending up to $900 a week on clothes and accessories), and he gambled away his money on bridge games. Had he invested, the way Chaplain and Lloyd did, he'd have been able to retain his independence. So he screwed himself (and us) with his fiscal shortsightedness.
It's great to see Keaton "live" as it were. It doesnt seem like his kinda thing though. Does anyone know the background to this performance and how it came about, what it means? I was confused. Even though Keaton had not so good material he is still AMAZING though, Go Keaton!
I had too, until I finally obtained it. That is why I uploaded it. I was sure there were others like myself who longed to see it. Thanks for your kind comment!

@drmoonrat: Please tell me where you found the cook, I've been dying to see it. (Is it on "The Art of Keaton" DVD set that Kino makes?)

Apparently while serving in WW1, he performed a similar dance to entertain the troops. Now that is something I would have liked to have seen, haha!

He did this in a short called "The Cook" with Fatty Arbuckle and was using sausage as the serpent.

I just remember them dancing with sausage. I found "The Cook" on DVD. It's a really great find.

3:55 mark. Looks like a line of Russian dolls with faces painted on, and not real people! Guess that's what happens when you sign contracts to MGM!

lol he's just amazing, too good for MGM to be honest. I love how clueless he looks in the last scene and his pink coat is cute =D x

And his cameo in that movie is an added irony!

Does anyone know what the music is?
I'm sure it was in a Looney Tunes cartoon or something, but I'd love to know the name.
