"It does not take a majority to prevail... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men" Sam Adams
The commercials at the beginning are offensive. Why do you support cyberspace being contaminated with people selling products that nobody really needs???
Saw this band live in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada) in the summer of 1994 (I think) They were a part of "Another Roadside Attraction" with The Tragically Hip, Hothouse Flowers, Daniel Lanlois, Crash Vegas and few others. The show was great.
Seen the band several times over the years, including one show at the old 'maxs' petersham inn as "the Gerry Fallwell Society' with Damien Lovelock for a Tibet benefit gig-and a nice small intamate crowd:) This song has a lot of relevance, even more so today as the 1% anxiously watch the world-wide occupy movement grow. Thanks 'oils' for helping develop the 'thinking' part of me & others, peace love & light:)
what really admire of this band is the fact that they do not care about the look they proyect , they only use the power of words and strong ideas. i really respect their point of view . to me they are unique and special .
those were the days when we were as free as the birds, sleep under the stars without worrying about the authorities clamping thier iron fists down our throats, fish wherever we wanted and just drove anywhere and everywhere, today big brother applies the big squeeze, no longer are we free to fly with the winds or to sing with the trees... our dream of utopia , safety and freedom diminishing with each successive government.
@gregboyds Ar`nt we all 'thriving off the system' this would make you a hypocrit too (our reliance on the way things are is so strong it is unlikely to change anytime between now and the near future)...
@pbvina In that case your very existance is encroaching on nature, and what separates humans from nature anyway? We are all organisms that need to eat, drink and live made from the same stuff it`s how are manipulation of nature that separates us apart. Please rethink your comments before posting them...
If there is something we must conserve it is natural beauty (what`s the point of living if it`s a ulitarian exsistance, a slave to capital) these developers have destroyed what is our birthright (to be exposed to natural beauty) for shame :(
I live in a part of Northern California that very much resembles this region of Oz, and it's the same story here. Urban development everywhere and the wilderness being encroached upon by greedy people. Sad
ww3 ....is on the way ...Dreamworld is fuckin endin alright - but i already live like a cockroach , so it wont bother me - BUT - the pricks standin round at the babrbie discussing negative gearing and stocks and bonds can share in the insects i will eat -RAW . CU N T S .
@gregboyds I am tired of this discussion which is less than productive. FYI I do try to minimize my environmental footprint. I leave you the last word. But I have to ask: Do you think it was OK for your parents to have you? Is the world a better place because you are in it? That's not a jab, it's a sincere question. I wish you well and regret anything I may have said that offended you.
I am a big fan of Midnight Oil and I listen to them on my MP3 almost everyday. I love their music and love the message they send here and all the other songs!
I found a small catfish in a parking lot about a block or two from a pond and across a large hwy. how it got there I have no idea ! I put the little guy in a plastic cup and returned him to the pond !
"the last square mile of terra firma is gavelled in the mail..." the engine of western style democracy says " BUY LAND, THEY don't make it ANYMORE". oh well...you dont have to convince the rich of that.
"the last square mile of terra firma is gavelled in the mail..." the engine of western style democracy says " BUY LAND, THEY don't make it ANYMORE". oh well...you dont have to convince the rich of that.
Another Midnight Oil video. A great song from "Diesel and Dust," one of the first CDs I bought in 1988. On an overnight bus trip from Sydney to Brisbane in 1989, I woke up just in time to see the sign for Dreamworld that's at 2:38 of the video. Unfortunately, much of that part of Queensland now looks like the images generated in the video.
In 1988 I finished an MS in environmental science was convinced I would change the world. The morning of my first job interview, I recall watching this video. 22 years later and beaten down by the realities of making a living and supporting a family, I listen to this with a more balanced perspective but sadness at having lost that idealism. At 50, I am recommitted to embracing the environmental cause I once thought I would champion but fell far short of.
@Pleistocene01 I think the best way to make change is to make the problem obvious to those who don't see it. There is only so much an individual can do with their own two hands. Midnight Oil was fantastic for waking people up! They did a lot of good for Australia.
@Pleistocene01 my freind i would shake your hand and tell you my life had simmilar events, i share your same passion for this song, loved the testimoney to one of the best bands in this world.
@Pleistocene01 Check out "Ghost Nation" by Hunters & Collectors, another great Aussie band from the same era who were passionate about many of the same topics as Midnight Oil.
They fought for someone, they championed a cause. In a way, became heroes. AND, we didn't see these heroes "fall". Besides that...I enjoy their music, passion, energy... They ROCK! ! !
Substance in music is scarce now days. Also, many modern day "role models" and heroes have "fallen" which will inevitably cause today's youth to look back to "proven" time tested examples of character and virtue. What I'm saying is that even though artists like Peter Garret may not be at the top of the charts they could gain a following of new listeners for the fact that they stood for something and their music had a purpose.
