In the book the librarian never notices her. I think it would've been a better movie if they had stuck to the book more. The characters are not what I pictured either.
I don't get everybody who says they've changed this movie from the book. The whole family and Aunt Sissy are just the same as in the book, the kids do the same errands at the shops...naturally they can't put every single minor character in the movie just like in the book, the movie's only 2 hours long. I think Francie is very feminine. She is neat and clean, prides herself on her good manners, does dishes and irons, talks about babies, reads instead of playing baseball...just like I pictured.
One of the most flawless child performances ever. Garners subtlety and timing are perfect - a breakthrough of realism in a era of cutesy kids. She's just devastating. A great adaptation of a novel... they have to condense elements for the screen otherwise it would truly be unwatchable. I think this is a classic.
For some reason, I thought of Francie as more feminine; that she was more of a little girl... But I like her this way too, she has more of a level head on her shoulders. It is just a shame that she can't live more like a kid and less than an adult. I love her father! He reminds me of mine (Bless his heart may he rest in peace) ^_^
@dragonscroll98, remember, he's been married at least 10 years and has a drinking problem at this point. I'd say he looks about like he should at this point.
Nope nope, can't even finish the movie..they fucked it up too much. They should have kept exactly the same! It was sooooooo perfect the way it was! >:(
Francies is literally about as far away as a person could be from the time and place of her book when knighthood was in flower. Yet she she is clearly transported.
I know the actor playing Johnny is not handsome but the actor ( John Dunn?) gives the impression being lit up from the inside ( like a child) , happy go lucky and charming that makes him SEEM handsome even if he isn't really. He plays the character very well!
A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER MADE. THE MAIN REASON IS THE ACTING OF MY LITTLE ANGEL PEGGY ANN GARNER. I AM THE #1 PEGGY ANN GARNER FAN IN THE WORLD!
i gotta read the book for school. summer reading. but school starts tomorrow! i have no choice but to watch the movie, but people are pointing out so many differences!!

The off screen loving relationship between James Dunn and Peggy Ann Garner shines through in all of their scenes together.

Evidently The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences thought James Dunn was perfect for the role.
