Read the MCMAP manuals, the "why" is spelled out pretty clearly in there. Maybe it's not the art that "isn't applicable", maybe it's the way YOU train in it
Where does this "all they want to do is roll around on the floor" hype come from? KM propaganda? The Gracies have always taught how to escape holds, weapons retention, strikes, how to get up and takedown defense to LEO's, and taught ground grappling simply to build a foundation
Yeah, your of shit. The Gracies have a great relationship with the US military and it is wisely accepted that a huge chunk of hand to hand is directly adopted from them. I've done OEF/OIF/OND deployments and have never met a soldier or marine who was dissatisfied with the techniques
Which is exactly the reason why you don't teach someone to stay tied up with an enemy combatant. Too many things go wrong. While you're jockeying for position this Tali's buddy is getting closer. Sorry, gang, but @ 41 years old I've survived a war, 2 revolutions & a coup attempt and after all that I can say this: the longer you stay on the ground the more likely the chance that's how they'll find your body.
Monkey, don't take my word for it. Call Lt. Col. Shusko @ the MACE on Quantico & ask him. The first thing the Gracie did was pull a Marine with all his trash on right down on top of him and was shortly after escorted to the door. You can teach it all you want but, if I may, teach your troops how to kill while your enemy is learning how to perform an arm bar or ankle lock. You gotta think about the fact that the enemy's other hand may be going for a knife while yours are occupied with submission.
I was standing in the room when 2 BJJ bubbas were giving a demo to an SF unit. Looked awesome. They really knew what they were doing. All that shit changed when a team sergeant held up a training gun and said "whoever gets to this gun first, wins." all the BJJ went out the window and it was just 2 guys flopping around trying to get to it. Never saw those guys again after that.
@jimondrd I guess the "bubbas" should have learned the weapons disarms before trying to give a demo to a SF unit. They do exist in the art. Sadly, not enough people practice them. However, they are part of the curriculum at the Gracie academy and in Gracie combatives.
Kastle is right. Gracies got tossed out of the MACE on Quantico because they didn't have an answer to how to perform when a troop has all his gear on.
@jimondrd I call your bullshit. I have taught soldiers how to use it with their gear on and I'm not even a BJJ BB yet. I did it when I was IN IRAQ in 2003/2004. It really doesn't change too much. Just being cognizant of where your gear is.
@fullsplitcayman The weapon's disarms can be found in Helio's master text. I'd like to see anyone's realistic defense against multiple people with weapons... best bet is to run. You're right in saying it's not the "cure all" to all combat situations. But nothing beyond constant vigilance and smart decisions is.
i no a lot of guys trash this self defense system but unless u actually practice bjj you may not understand ground game being a good option. most inexperienced guys will b out of their element on the ground and what you dont see in this video is takedowns or throws that leave you on top and in control. In this video it seems as if they are just working on defense if you do get taken down. in a real fight i wouldnt just fall onto my back but if i do get taken down on the street i can still win
@axlnfinke yeah u got a bunch of guys trashing BJJ when they have never actually practiced it. I dont care if you dont do BJJ but respect it cuz they know less than they think
@slamminsteve707 I am a second degree BJJ blk blt through dragon family mma(xtreme jkd,a muay tai kali cross, and my bjj teacher was one of brazillian top teams members 10-12 yrs ago b-4 they changed the name).it has saved my ass several times! jiujitsu may translate to the soft way BUT THERE IS NOTHIN SOFT ABOUT BJJ.
@axlnfinke o i know i also train in bjj in one of renzo gracies students i think its great its just that people dont see the side where you end up on top. these guys arnt just going to pull guard. Even if they did end up in guard it doesnt matter because little do the bjj trashers know guard is where a lot of practioners are most dangerous.
Yes, they are incredible martial artists and probably have the best ground art in sport martial arts. The street/war and sport are two different things. I respectfully disagree with their philosophy of street and military combat self defense. Ask any real combatives instructor if they agree with choosing to go to the ground as a first choice and they will say "NO!" you should not choose to go to the ground. You should avoid it when fighting in the real world.
why? people don't fight fair! their buddy is going to smash a bottle on your head while you are trying to sink some submission hold. What about weapons? go to the Philippines and get into a bar fight with knife fighter and see how you do?
Once you are on the ground his buddy will cut your throat. Hum.. what about a real combat situation in war?
I agree that Gracie Jiu-jitsu really opened a lot of eyes in the martial arts world about the ground game. I just don't feel one should choose to be on the ground.
Many real fights go to the ground but many real fights end standing up as well.
@axlnfinke I was a correctional officer,SRT member, cop & now a PMC contractor not to mention a combatives instructor & I will tell you that those statistics are not always true. You should strive not to go to the ground for many reasons & if you do getting up should be your mission priority. The street & or battle field is not a padded cage or dojo & the size of your enemy, weapons & possible multiple opponents are the reasons why going to the ground is an error that can cost you your life.
You better be prepared if the fight goes to the ground. You also better be prepared if he suddenly attacks you with a weapon! Put the time in and make sure you are not a fish out of water. You also better make sure that if you are suddenly attacked you are able to deal with a knife plunging into your chest or a machete coming at you.
Guys come on, there are no do overs in the street or in combat in war. And if you combatives instructor does not know how to teach you how to deal with the effects of andrenalin you better find another instructor.
Love BJJ
Just don't agree with going to the ground as your first choice!
I expect the BJJ guys now to send angry comments but I am telling the truth.
@fullsplitcayman Thats why I study Kali and phillipino knife and stick fighting! I have unarmed several combantants includeing knife fighters with jujitsu.....I break your arm you aint pickin up a damn thing!
@fullsplitcayman I agree, these Gracies are so arrogant in thinking their martial art is the go-to for every combative situations. Yeah I respect what they've done for the martial arts world but damn, the time has moved on: BJJ isn't the most dominant martial arts anymore, it has been figured out for a long long time. Why the hell would you choose to go to the ground in a real life combat situation? Get over yourselves Gracie.
@HwarangOfFaith SHOW SOME RESPECT FIRST OFF! #2 BJJ has saved my ass on the street more times than i can count! u get most guys down they flop like a fish!#3 %85-%90 of all street fights end up on the ground if you are not proficiante its your ASS!
GJJ(the self defence version) is mainly used standing, it is only used on the ground incase you happen to end up there, you need to know GJJ so you can escape/survive the ground.
Army Combatives has more than "sport" grappling in it. It's foundation is BJJ but there are kicks, punches, throws, knife, stick techniques. The Russian military including Spetznaz has used Sambo for decades which is mainly a grappling art combing elements of Russian folk wrestling and Judo. You try throwing flashy kicks with 30lbs body armor, 70lbs rucksack, and don't forget water and ammo. Get real. I'd rather take some down and heabutt them with my helmet. Or pick an arm to break.
@LittleJ2008 The video is about Gracie Combatives, not Army Combatives which is a separate issue. They're both intertwined though, because as you say, the foundation of Army Combatives is BJJ. That´s not a good foundation. BJJ is a highly evolved system, magnificent in its own right, but it didn't evolve to fit the soldiers needs. It evolved in the sports arena, in the laboratory of one-on-one ritualistic duel for social status.
@LittleJ2008 BJJ doesn't care for uneven ground with sharp edges, strewn with rocks, metal and glass. It doesn't care for multiple opponents or team members, nor for any kind of weapon, be it firearms or blades. It doesn't care for all the gear that you mention. Think about it! Try doing your BJJ "with 30lbs body armor, 70lbs rucksack, and don't forget water and ammo." I wouldn't be surprised if headbutting is all that's left for you then! And btw, when did I advocate throwing flashy kicks?
@LittleJ2008 Now, since BJJ doesn't care for all of these elements, it doesn't understand or respect them. That's a faulty foundation for a soldiers combatives system! Doesn't matter if you add on a little bit of strikes, sticks and knives, it's still like putting all terrain tires on a race car. Mr Gracie here is wasting these soldiers time and programming them with bad muscle memory that can get them killed. That's a serious lack of integrity in my book.
i read all or you reply comments. What is your military experience? I'd like to know. Anyways, everyone plans on standing up during an altercation but most fights even outside a cage or ring, end up on the ground. You have to know what to do when it gets there. Ask any veteran police officer. If you want to know what I do, I'm in the Army and my job is military police. Did you know a soldier in Iraq was awarded the silver star for using combatives to kill an insurgent. Guess it works huh?
@LittleJ2008 Guees it works, huh? Yeah, of course it "works"! Everything works sometime, nothing works all the time. I've already explained why I think BJJ is a terrific combatives foundation for any enemies that I would fight. And no, I'm not interested in telling you about my military experience.
I dont think its the Gracie's that you have to blame for this, these techniques are the exact same stuff taught in MACP. The Gracie's are just doing it a bit better. So why bark at them....oh wait, maybe your not MACP trained, are you in the marines?
yeah, im happy with what ive learned as a tkd martial artist and a wrestler in school, but once i get on the ground all ive learned to do is pin the guy, which isnt going to help in the real world. does gjj teach how to fight on the ground and standing?
If you're a future Marine, their martial arts program has BJJ in it. Army combatives has more or atleast emphasizes it more. The founder of Army combatives, a Marine who transfered to the Army and became a Ranger makes a good point though. We won't win wars because we are supieror hand to hand fighter but it's instilling the willingness, confidence, and aggression to close in with and destroy the enemy. BJJ helps with peacekeaping missions too. Better to choke a civilian unconcious than kill
I hold a black belt in TaeKwonDo but i would like to learn something more practical in modern day situations. TKD is good but it getting outdated. I like GJJ because Marines trust their lives to it and it just looks effective to me. KFM just looks flashy and the movements look overdrawn.
i thought so too, thanks for the input. im trying to decide which one to learn and im leaning towards gracie. what do you think makes it more effective?
Spoken like a CIVILIAN who doesn't realize that those BJJ techniques are impossible in the gear worn in the field and whose only experience with the TMA's is kung fu theater.
No, they replaced the LINE system with BJJ because LINE is all about the kill (get 'em down, stamp the head or ribcage to mush), doesn't enable you to make arrests & capture people easily. In a situation where you're fighting a police action, LINE is counterproductive, as killing people unnecessarily in front of their families tends to make a LOT of enemies. You need a system where you can have the choice of killing or capture.
What kind of culture puts weapons storage next to schools to make the enemy look bad when the weapons storage facility is hit and kids next door die? What kind of culture encourages women to strap bombs to themselves? Even apart from which side is right or wrong, shouldn't this give people a clue?
I am not ignorant - I just have a different opinion than you (which I know often fills liberals with disgust while they praise diversity).
Excellent substitution of "hazards" for "weapons storage facility". Very sly.
I really like the parallel of a government intentionally placing nuclear weapons next to schools in order for kids to die to make the enemy look bad to what happened in the Erin Brockovich story. You are terrible at making comparisons.
Among about 18 other problems with your terrible comparison of Saddam's administration to the US (based on the Erin Brockovich story!), there's the simple notion that some justice was served ultimately in that case, and no one in the Bush Administration would feel Pacific Gas was the good guy. Do you imagine Saddam's administration would come out and allow lawsuits? Do you think Saddam and his sons were all against what they themselves did?
I believe in the war and am happy we did it and would have supported it before Cheney was around, so I don't feel like a puppet. Many others support the war and for many good reasons other than Cheney gaining money. I am also for Israel and US taking out Iran's nuke facilities even if some youtube video says that makes Cheney get more stock options by six degrees of Kevin Bacon. The entire world would have been united against terrorist towelheads before Europe became totally effete.
I love too how bad actions by a private company (which was then sued under the legal system in place and lost!) is comparable to a government itself placing the danger - and placing it specifically with a motive to cause death of their own children. Real similar.
The video has more todo with "combatives shooting show" than with the Gracie combatives techniques... I don´t think Mestre Hélio would approved a video like this one.
Wow, Rener is actually a pretty good shot. Something tells me that it's not his first time firing a gun. Glad to see the Gracies coming over to the "Sandbox" and teaching our soldiers!
But who is the REAL enemy ? Cheney and Rummsfeld should be tried as war criminals.
There never were any "weapons of mass destruction" and Iraq had nothing to do with al Quaeda - EVERYONE knew that. How many lives (Iraqi, US, etc) have been lost to support Cheney's oil company interests ? And if there is a war crime specifically regarding stupidity, surely "W" is guilty of that !
Weapons of mass destruction were found (chemical & biological warfare), nuclear material was found, evidence for nuclear weapons was found. The majority of Western Civilization agreed with the evidence. Even if we were mistaken (which we weren't), Saddam wasn't allowing inspections and was trying to make us believe he had nukes. Saddam's own generals believed he did. You play this game, you reap the consequences. The war had various justifications apart from oil, though that is also valid.
Can you point me towards a source where I can find all this news that you got your info from. Cause I never saw the evidence that you're describing in the news ever.
Yeah, great. I particularly liked the way that jiu-jitsu was juxtaposed with glorified gun-play. What's next? How to triangle choke an Iraqui guy in front of his wife and kids?
They are practicing a modern military art...jiu jitsu was developed under the Japanese feudal system and was used to enforce shady goals...your lame Canadian and Englishman ire and hatred against America is pretty stupid. I voted for Obama and practice jj. What do you guys do? Philosophize about martial arts while you drink maple syrup and/or fill your overweight bellies with fish and chips? Respect to the Gracies...not you clowns.
Every nation has a physical combat aspect to their military. This is why we don't have a bunch of obese guys, older men, or women running around with guns, modern combat still depends on physical prowess. A gun, like a sword, can be used by an average thief or a great warrior and a great warrior must be well rounded physically and mentally.
The Gracies visited Iraq to support the troops...not policies in Iraq. So stop bitching and moaning.
This is not always so - plenty of people have lost with rounds left. Also, a sweep like any hand to hand technique is unlikely ever to be used but keep in mind the towel heads have no honor and will fight by any means - e.g., sending women and kids in plain clothes because they don't value human life very much - and therefore one has to be prepared for any number of sneaky surprises. The US is so ethical we try not to shoot innocents but this can backfire given the scumbags we're up against.
When Iraqi soldiers invade your neighborhood (just to gain control of oil resouces) and subvert you and your family against your will, we'll see who the pussy is.
And all this is being done (US soldiers killed and maimed) so Dick Cheney can retire an oil billionaire !!!
You are the pussy for not standing up to Cheney and Rummsfeld.
I agree it depends on one's perspective. Myself, I love Bush & Cheney (and feel the war has been good and morally just on multiple levels) so possibly that is why I am not worked up over a video that shows jiu-jitsu and guns being shot. But honestly when I see Al Queda videos of gun training and hand-to-hand combat training it also doesn't bother me (despite my hatred for those people which probably approaches your hatred for the US)- it just is what it is, and is independent of issues of taste.

Even if they never get to use it, it's still good training to know.
What do you learn from running laps?

Teaching sports to soldiers while passing it off as combatives equals selling out the safety of the troops for a few bucks. Disgraceful.

Maybe the army realized that flying bicycle kicks and tai chi death touches don't work in the real world...

Soamsey 3 years ago
your ignorance is disgusting
what kind of culture puts nuclear/chemical/bioogical hazards next door to kids ?
ever hear of Erin Brockovich ?
cburcinc 3 years ago
I am not ignorant - I just have a different opinion than you (which I know often fills liberals with disgust while they praise diversity).
Excellent substitution of "hazards" for "weapons storage facility". Very sly.
I really like the parallel of a government intentionally placing nuclear weapons next to schools in order for kids to die to make the enemy look bad to what happened in the Erin Brockovich story. You are terrible at making comparisons.
Soamsey 3 years ago
Among about 18 other problems with your terrible comparison of Saddam's administration to the US (based on the Erin Brockovich story!), there's the simple notion that some justice was served ultimately in that case, and no one in the Bush Administration would feel Pacific Gas was the good guy. Do you imagine Saddam's administration would come out and allow lawsuits? Do you think Saddam and his sons were all against what they themselves did?

Cheney (the real force behind the decisions in the White House) sends US troops to die in Iraq so he can retire rich from oil.
Not a great role model as a leader, either.
Aren't you even slightly annoyed at being a puppet, so Cheney can get rich from oil ?
cburcinc 3 years ago

Today 3 more dead Canadian soldiers were brought down our "Highway of Heros" in coffins in my home town.
I don't mind supporting our mission in Afganistan, because if we don't stop al Quaeda there, we will have to at our doorstep.
But let's be real, Iraq had NOTHING to do with al Quaeda, NOTHING to do with 9-11, and NO nucs.
Why do US soldiers die so Dick Cheney can retire an oil billionaire ???
Answer me that WalrusLove - and don't sugar-coat it with fake maple syrup!

Wow, Rener is actually a pretty good shot. Something tells me that it's not his first time firing a gun. Glad to see the Gracies coming over to the "Sandbox" and teaching our soldiers!
Great job and loved the video!

"Choke the Enemy" ???
But who is the REAL enemy ? Cheney and Rummsfeld should be tried as war criminals.
There never were any "weapons of mass destruction" and Iraq had nothing to do with al Quaeda - EVERYONE knew that. How many lives (Iraqi, US, etc) have been lost to support Cheney's oil company interests ? And if there is a war crime specifically regarding stupidity, surely "W" is guilty of that !
cburcinc 3 years ago
Weapons of mass destruction were found (chemical & biological warfare), nuclear material was found, evidence for nuclear weapons was found. The majority of Western Civilization agreed with the evidence. Even if we were mistaken (which we weren't), Saddam wasn't allowing inspections and was trying to make us believe he had nukes. Saddam's own generals believed he did. You play this game, you reap the consequences. The war had various justifications apart from oil, though that is also valid.

Yeah, great. I particularly liked the way that jiu-jitsu was juxtaposed with glorified gun-play. What's next? How to triangle choke an Iraqui guy in front of his wife and kids?
How about some taste?

I totally agree.
What if foreign soldiers were stationed in America, and killing Americans with no accountability ?
America has no more right to be in Iraq, than Iraq has the right to be in America.
Don't confuse the sport of BJJ/MMA with what is going on in the streets of Iraq.

Respect to the Gracies...not you clowns.
walruslove 3 years ago
In hand-to-hand combat, the person with the last bullet fired from the chamber wins, period.
What role does a half-butterfly guard sweep play in modern combat ?
The point is that combining BJJ with glorified gunplay, in the context of what is going on in Iraq, is tasteless.
cburcinc 3 years ago
Every nation has a physical combat aspect to their military. This is why we don't have a bunch of obese guys, older men, or women running around with guns, modern combat still depends on physical prowess. A gun, like a sword, can be used by an average thief or a great warrior and a great warrior must be well rounded physically and mentally.
The Gracies visited Iraq to support the troops...not policies in Iraq. So stop bitching and moaning.
walruslove 3 years ago 2
This is not always so - plenty of people have lost with rounds left. Also, a sweep like any hand to hand technique is unlikely ever to be used but keep in mind the towel heads have no honor and will fight by any means - e.g., sending women and kids in plain clothes because they don't value human life very much - and therefore one has to be prepared for any number of sneaky surprises. The US is so ethical we try not to shoot innocents but this can backfire given the scumbags we're up against.
Soamsey 3 years ago
what if their last bullet misses?

Shooting guns and jiu-jitsu are both fun and both go hand-in-hand. Not everyone is a pussy who can't bear to watch it.
Soamsey 3 years ago
Depends on your perspective.
When Iraqi soldiers invade your neighborhood (just to gain control of oil resouces) and subvert you and your family against your will, we'll see who the pussy is.
And all this is being done (US soldiers killed and maimed) so Dick Cheney can retire an oil billionaire !!!
You are the pussy for not standing up to Cheney and Rummsfeld.
cburcinc 3 years ago
I agree it depends on one's perspective. Myself, I love Bush & Cheney (and feel the war has been good and morally just on multiple levels) so possibly that is why I am not worked up over a video that shows jiu-jitsu and guns being shot. But honestly when I see Al Queda videos of gun training and hand-to-hand combat training it also doesn't bother me (despite my hatred for those people which probably approaches your hatred for the US)- it just is what it is, and is independent of issues of taste.
