  • Thank you, Gene!

  • Please, Judy Garland made this song a classic. All of other renditions have his value, of course, and Gene Vincent made it in his style. He gave it a new sound (rock-ballad) and made it wonderfully, but, we don't must compare them. Each one in its proper style. But Judy Garland made this song a classic.

  • On arecent program narated by Roger Daltrey he made reference to Judy Garland . It was her favourite rendition of this tune

  • He always watches the ceiling!

  • these old videos make me wanna travel in time to live with them, so interesting period and so great music, man i get goosebumps and dream myself to better times

  • just love that smile so sexy xx

  • He had a unique style and was a versatile singer. Good that this film was preserved.

  • best version ever no-one could top this man xx

  • aww troubled innocence...heartbreaking & good! young sean penn should've done a gene biopic.

  • he was the best thats all that counts xx

  • TO ME THIS IS THE BEST VERSION OF SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW

I STILL HAVE SOME CALLERS ON MY RADIO SHOW APPLE 98.5FM BACCHUS MARSH VICTORIA..... THAT THINK BILLY THORP's VERSION IS BETTER BUT I WILL FOREVER LOVE THE KING OF ROCKABILLY GENE VINCENT AND AS ALWAYS YOU MOST TURN THE VOLUME UP TO THE ROOF FOR THE BEST SOUND.. LONG LIVE GENE's MUSIC

  • Love to hear Gene Vincent sing a song made famous by Judy Garland, who dare's call Gene Vincent homo? I'll kill'em.

  • Gene's version is definitely the best!

  • how amazing would it be to be sitting front row watching him sing this, Gene was one of the greatest ever

  • @ub3rskillz i wish xx

  • AWESOME!!!

  • My daughter got married November 6th of this year and she asked me to pick out a song that her and I could dance too. I played this video for her and so this was the song we danced to at her wedding reception. Thank you sir for posting this video and being able to share in my daughter's life and my own.

  • omg Gene's ballads are just amazing

  • I've loved Gene singing this song for years, and I've only just discovered it on youtube tonight. How wonderful to finally see the great man performing. What a treat, I think you're ACE Gene!

  • Gene had a gift for musical fusion that the world wasn't really ready for this early. The Beatles easily crossed from R&B, to Country, to Olde Tyme Music Hall - but nobody was really doing that as early as 1959.

Gene was only about five years ahead of his time - but he still never got the credit he deserved.

  • people - even if you don't 'get' Gene V, (I'm a'lernin' - diggin it all so far) be respectful c'mon how bad can he have been ; we're still checking him out and he inspired The Beatles so there's gotta be somethin' there, even if it don't make you wanna buy his songs. I used to be a dick about listen to other music besides what I liked and it never challenged me or gave me a chance to broaden...otherwise I'd be still listening to Priest, Travers, Tull, Trower (all the 'T's..) all day. Good Post

  • wonderfull. will never get tired of this song in gene`s version...

  • What a sense of poetry and whistfulness. To the negative brain-dead: at least learn the rule of English grammar.

  • I so agree with Eugene .. if yu listen to the original recording its so wistful .Harold Arlen would have said "Hey Judy .... THATS how it should be sung"

  • Gene could sing wild rockers and beautiful ballads with the same passion and intensity.Very few could that before, and no one today.

  • Why he is looking always in the sky?

  • @RockyTheEagle Listen to the lyrics.

  • @RockyTheEagle Gene was looking for PIGS ON WING.

  • The softer side of Gene. But, the "devil" was never faraway.

  • Dude could sing his ass off.

  • This is a great version of this song. I'm still tryin' to find this 45. I like the way Gene is checkin' out Jerry playin' the lead guitar break.

  • wojo47 - if you think this is good, search out his Capitol recording of it just to see how very good the proper version was - he sings it in a slightly lower key.

  • i love his voice---what a talent!

  • live !!!!

  • It's touching to see how he enjoys his music and doesn't have just dollar signs in his eyes. I want to beam me into the screen and give this man a hug.

  • absolutely brilliant !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is amazing, didn't even know that he did this song ! I like this version better !

  • Gene Vincent did this song much better than Judy Garland

  • @joetyner Gene Vincent is a rock & roll hero, but this is shite.

  • @joetyner Why all the Garland bashing? She was just sixteen when she sang it, had probably very little artistic control over how she sang it, and still made it memorable. Leave her alone.

  • WOW----LOVE IT!!!!!

  • The year Gene Vincent "moved" to Europe.

  • GENE - UN PUR - RESPECT

  • absolute classic Go fer it Gene!

  • I want to go back to 1959, I would be 6 years old, I never heard this version, but if I did, I would have been a HUGE, GENE VINCENT Fan!

  • To have seen Gene live will always stay in my memory banks. He was superb, my one regret was not seeing Eddie Cochran. but thanks to all those people who post these great clips,we can turn the clock back.

  • gwaaaan gene!!!!

hes allways had that madness in his eyes.....brilliant,... what did he used to look at?

  • the rainbow, man :)

  • Who's that playing guitar and smiling and swaying next to gene at 35 seconds?

  • jerry merritt

  • Comment removed

  • I think you will find it is Jerry Merritt

  • can imagine some serious smooching has been done to this.

  • The guitarist here Jerry Merritt walked into the Tower Records in Gateway/Portland in 1993 and I met Rock and Roll history!

I have his business card saying 'International Recording Artist'

He was a real gentleman. R:)

  • This is hands down the greatest version of 'Rainbow'

I;ve ever heard. Voice of an angel. Rolando!

  • I'd certainly agree that something about it doesn't quite work. Maybe it's the combination of his approach with the instrumental arrangement. Still, he somehow pulls it off, for me, anyway.

  • good 1 gene .your record sales tells a story .

  • anemic. Stupid guy. Recorded in 1959 on poor quality kinescope. Gene Vincent made the the best cover ever of this judy garland gem.

  • @eugenecraddock That gay singer was not good and he was very small

  • @jjoce378 Iam not sure how PRATT translates into French, but you are a French PRATT !!!! OH and i see your country is lead by an even smaller little man.

  • @MrFoxhunter123456 Hey eugenecraddock and I are frenches and we love Gene , so don't think that , because a lot of french people are pricks , that we all are assholes ! Gene for ever ! Americans , britons , frenches , chineese , greeks ... no matter where we come from , we are all brothers of rock n'roll , Long live to the greasers

  • @jjoce378 One of the best Rock-A-Billy/Rock n Roll singers you will ever hear you prick!

  • Sweet Gene Vincent,I still miss you.

    xxx <3 <3 <3

    Loving this song..

    Troubles melt like a lemondrops..

    ;)

  • this man rocked his gut to death,

and rocked the world as well,

cuz i can feel it in my gut.

  • Sweet Gene Vincent..what a cool guy..Sadly missed..

  • Grande chanson,grand chanteur,grande interprétation!!

    Grand merci

  • How did he die--he had a great voice!

  • Look on his web site,I think you will find he died of a bleeding ulcer, brought on by his dependency on prescriped drugs, for the painful leg. He also liked a few drinks, especially when not working.

He truly was a great all round singer. Not many Rock and Roll singers of that time could sing a ballad like that, after delivering a rocking song, he had the gift to silence a going wild venue. Teddy boys mesmerized. I remember it all so clearly. Great times.

  • Bet Harold Arlen said

"Hey Judy ......thats how it SHOULD be sung !!! "

  • I contacted the town next to his grave and they didnt know who he was, I asked them to mention him in their tourist brochure as he is one of a kind, only one Gene Vincent, the greatest

  • That was a good thing to do. He should be remembered. Hope they follow through.

  • Wow. What a voice!

  • Beautiful!

  • Beautiful! Wow...

  • Gene Vincent had a talented voice for fast moving Rock and Roll songs, as well as for Rock and Roll ballads.

  • ACE.........................

  • you left us 37 years today,R.I.P.Gene......

  • from who slapped john, to ballards like this , great talent.

  • The Beatles copied this version in their early days 1960 0nwards with Paul McCartney on vocals,. It was a showstopper

  • "if I get through this I will be a better man", the last words of the greatest singer and performer who sang from his heart

  • Gene Vincent had the very rare talent of being able to sing a ballad in the way it was meant to be sung. Always too good, I can't stop listening to them.

  • even better than jerry lee lewis !

  • the best version ever !!

  • the same stage appears in a lot of videos featuring those singers like gene, collins kids and other the same guy wearing a cowboy hat and same women where that stage was?

  • The stage of Town Hall Party, but where is it located I don't know...

  • @Mingisugune ...400 S Long Beach Blvd. Compton, CA.

  • @surfercrow Thanks!

  • That magic voice... Who can ever forget Gene Vincent?

  • Thank you very much. A great voice!

  • Quizas poquita voz tenia en las baladas, pero tenia mucha mas dulzura y sentimiento que Elvis, eso si que esta claro.

    I remember Gene

  • cantaba mejor que elvis....Gene is the best!!!

  • just magical,always brings a tear,god bless gene

  • This is truly a touching version.

  • Brilliant version of this truly classic, great song which is one of my favourite Gene songs.Thankyou for posting this.RIP. Gene.
