Please, Judy Garland made this song a classic. All of other renditions have his value, of course, and Gene Vincent made it in his style. He gave it a new sound (rock-ballad) and made it wonderfully, but, we don't must compare them. Each one in its proper style. But Judy Garland made this song a classic.
these old videos make me wanna travel in time to live with them, so interesting period and so great music, man i get goosebumps and dream myself to better times
TO ME THIS IS THE BEST VERSION OF SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW
I STILL HAVE SOME CALLERS ON MY RADIO SHOW APPLE 98.5FM BACCHUS MARSH VICTORIA..... THAT THINK BILLY THORP's VERSION IS BETTER BUT I WILL FOREVER LOVE THE KING OF ROCKABILLY GENE VINCENT AND AS ALWAYS YOU MOST TURN THE VOLUME UP TO THE ROOF FOR THE BEST SOUND.. LONG LIVE GENE's MUSIC
My daughter got married November 6th of this year and she asked me to pick out a song that her and I could dance too. I played this video for her and so this was the song we danced to at her wedding reception. Thank you sir for posting this video and being able to share in my daughter's life and my own.
I've loved Gene singing this song for years, and I've only just discovered it on youtube tonight. How wonderful to finally see the great man performing. What a treat, I think you're ACE Gene!
Gene had a gift for musical fusion that the world wasn't really ready for this early. The Beatles easily crossed from R&B, to Country, to Olde Tyme Music Hall - but nobody was really doing that as early as 1959.
Gene was only about five years ahead of his time - but he still never got the credit he deserved.
people - even if you don't 'get' Gene V, (I'm a'lernin' - diggin it all so far) be respectful c'mon how bad can he have been ; we're still checking him out and he inspired The Beatles so there's gotta be somethin' there, even if it don't make you wanna buy his songs. I used to be a dick about listen to other music besides what I liked and it never challenged me or gave me a chance to broaden...otherwise I'd be still listening to Priest, Travers, Tull, Trower (all the 'T's..) all day. Good Post
I so agree with Eugene .. if yu listen to the original recording its so wistful .Harold Arlen would have said "Hey Judy .... THATS how it should be sung"
wojo47 - if you think this is good, search out his Capitol recording of it just to see how very good the proper version was - he sings it in a slightly lower key.
It's touching to see how he enjoys his music and doesn't have just dollar signs in his eyes. I want to beam me into the screen and give this man a hug.
@joetyner Why all the Garland bashing? She was just sixteen when she sang it, had probably very little artistic control over how she sang it, and still made it memorable. Leave her alone.
To have seen Gene live will always stay in my memory banks. He was superb, my one regret was not seeing Eddie Cochran. but thanks to all those people who post these great clips,we can turn the clock back.

truly one of the most over-rated, under-talented rock singers of all time. The only way someone could like this guy is if they had absolutely never heard someone with talent.
I'd certainly agree that something about it doesn't quite work. Maybe it's the combination of his approach with the instrumental arrangement. Still, he somehow pulls it off, for me, anyway.

Man, that sounded anemic. Perhaps I'm not hearing the emperor's new clothes well enough. Anyhoo, he's done some extraordinary work but, this ain't it.

Americans , britons , frenches , chineese , greeks ... no matter where we come from , we are all brothers of rock n'roll , Long live to the greasers
Look on his web site,I think you will find he died of a bleeding ulcer, brought on by his dependency on prescriped drugs, for the painful leg. He also liked a few drinks, especially when not working.
He truly was a great all round singer. Not many Rock and Roll singers of that time could sing a ballad like that, after delivering a rocking song, he had the gift to silence a going wild venue. Teddy boys mesmerized. I remember it all so clearly. Great times.
I contacted the town next to his grave and they didnt know who he was, I asked them to mention him in their tourist brochure as he is one of a kind, only one Gene Vincent, the greatest
Gene Vincent had the very rare talent of being able to sing a ballad in the way it was meant to be sung. Always too good, I can't stop listening to them.
the same stage appears in a lot of videos featuring those singers like gene, collins kids and other the same guy wearing a cowboy hat and same women where that stage was?
Thank you, Gene!
