I'm not sure why people are confused about what emo is. It's a genre of music that stemmed off from hardcore punk in the late 80s and through the late 90s before " dying off. " It was typified by bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Texas Is The Reason, Mineral, Cap'n Jazz and so on.

This is post hardcore, and it sounds very dissimilar for the most part to emo music.

For the genre ordeal, I have been listening to senses fail for several years and I consider them to be post-hardcore, though they have had somewhat of a transition to a metalcore sound in recent years.
