It's funny because of the gratuitous obnoxiousness of the driver. He says "dumbass" with the same pitch and inflection Beavis and Butthead would have used.
@KEYSERSOZE1965 The Original Series had it's fair share of humorous moments already. In fact, Nimoy's idea for this movie was to bring back the lightheartedness of the old show after doing mostly darker dramatic films.
So many fun quotes from that movie... we repeat many of them in our family. Mention a crappy movie, book, or author, and we say " ... Ah yes! The Giants!" (from on the bus... in the same scene.) Great movie :)

AidanMclaren, I always thought "dumbass" was an ugly slang word too, for some reason ulgier and dirtier then "motherfucker" or something like that. But I have not heard anyone use "dumbass" in years and years. In the 80s, it was more common then today.
It is - it's the best of all the Star Trek movies, because it's funny as all get-out and such a breath of fresh air. If you're interested in Star Trek, I highly recommend this movie.
This always ranked high in my favorite Trek quotes. :D
I couldn't believe it when I called my mother a dumbass, and she said "Well a double dumbass on you!" Oh the agony, I laughed so hard I forgot we were fighting.
@CatAtomic99 Is that right? Thanks. Maybe I should use this approach when someone attempts to run me over or interfere in my right of way when they're driving--and I follow the crosswalk lights.
I love the fact that they're all wearing their traditional uniforms, while Chekov is being all stylish with the leather jacket. Funny as hell to me, and yet adorable at the same time.
That boppy sax music is the worst thing about the 80s. Back then you couldn't get away from saxophone. I would go so far as to call it the instrument of the decade if not for the keyboard synthesizer.
i see where you're coming from, but I happen to love it :) it makes me nostalgic. A lot of 80's movies and tv themes used that style too and kinds of cheer me up when I hear it.

Fun Fact: this scene was ad libed, the taxi driver ignored the "filming in progress" sign and drove onto the set.
