Yes! And, without a doubt her singer and the spirit that lied with "The Mother of Gospel", I call her is seen so naturally. Look at her eye's as she sangs, how natural they glow. SMILE
Man I tell you I'm 21 years old and I listen to what I call great music as far as jazz, R&B, Soul, Gospel, Country even classical and I tell you she's the greatest AND she only sang one genre of music (Gospel) and she's my favorite singer then there's everyone else no questions Asked! Also, I read her biography, seen all her intervews, listened to all her music, and it seems like her soul was spotless as if she was an angel from GOD Listen to that VOICE
I love gospel, i love Mahalia please someone, direct me. cause i love this and its a shame we do not get this today. Ry and yes i am white from the UK. but music has never been colour to me. never cause god bless my uncle and auntie who are jamacan. but i love gospel and soul i wish i was back in this time and i am 25. i just love music and its history i love people, not to get me mistaken for a complete fruit loop. lol :-) xxxxxx
What a classic! Thanks for posting, AhLordGod! I love this album (Garden of Prayer) because it is a 'smorgasbord' of diverse styles of gospel: Sanctified, Holiness, high church, Baptist, GOGIC, AME, and many others., across very different regions -- Kansas City, Memphis, New York/Harlem, South Chicago, Virginia Piedmont, New Orleans, and so on.
Thank you! There is a lot of ground to cover with this vast genre, that's for sure. Are you familiar with Marion Williams? Check out her YouTube selections, including 'Climbing Higher And Higher', 'Swing Low Sweet Chariot', or 'Even Me', which was one of Williams' standards, for even more variety. Williams was nearly a generation younger than Mahalia Jackson; she came to Philadelphia by way of Miami, Florida.
Even though the tracks are so unique, as compared with the rest of Mahalia's repertoire, they are a 'must-hear' for anyone being introduced to her immense talent & the incredible diversity of traditional gospel!

You know the gospel genre well. I think this Garden album is my favorite of all. It was the first one I bought in 1967.
