  • Pretty amazing looking for 1988.

  • Buggy Boy > *

  • Power Drift still seems the most thrilling, fast-paced racing game I’ve ever seen. Are there any modern games as fast and thrilling as this with this kind of feeling of speed?

  • @GrandDizzy Trackmania is about as awesome as it gets when it comes to speed. Especially the Island tracks and cars, check it out here on YouTube.

  • @sisterbrothers Thanks for that! :) I love it. Reminds me a lot of Power Drift. But I still don't think it has the same feeling of speed though. There isn't enough scenery whizzing past the camera.

  • Is it just me, or were some announcer sound clips, e.g. the countdown to start the race and "Final Lap!" recycled for use in Virtua Racing and Virtua Formula?

  • This came after OutRun and has an enlightening atmosphere. Like that every driver has a special animation when they pass someone.

  • always reminded me of a roller coaster this years ago

  • yeaaa this was heavy in my arcade

  • no le encuentro en mi lista de mame¿¿??

  • I hope Sega decides to release this as a Virtual Console Arcade title for the Wii in the future!

  • It's not for the Genesis. That's the cutoff for Sega's VC stuff. Maybe as WiiWare, but very very VERY unlikely.

  • i remeber seeing this in the arcades. you would sit in a car and it would spin 360 deg it was one of them machines u wouldnt miss when u walked in

  • I have MAME32 and I can't get Power Drift to work at all...how do you do it

  • It doesn't run under MAME. IIRC I ran it under an emulator called "final burn". You might try looking for that.

  • if sega had released like a sega y board in home form like the sega genesis they would own the shit out of aneo geo, anyhow if sgea released anything of theyre arcadeslike a sega system 32 in the early nintys like 91 or 92 they would own any 16 or any system on the market.

  • It is said this arcade game was the inspiration for Super Mario Kart. You can tell by a character called Emily in this game and the association to the lone female in SMK.

The makers of SMK even said so this game inspired them!

  • Power Drift is awesome. A long time ago they had this game right in the front in the Penny arcade at Kennywood. People would crowd around this game and you had to wait for a turn. Sega used that same graphic style from After Burner for this game.

  • that's because this game runs on the same hardware that After Burner and After Burner II ran on (Sega's X Hardware)

  • Is this available for the pc?

  • I always loved to play this game for the AMIGA, it was the best racing game ever. I could never pass this course when I was about 7, but I can now! I'LL NEVER FORGET THE INTRO WHEN THE START AND LIGHTS ENTER FLYING!

  • The Amiga version was good but the C64 version was awesome!

Smooth scrolling, fast input BUT the music alone out arcaded the Arcaded/Amiga version!

Check it out yourself at the hvsc!

    ... love those

  • that "final lap" sound's the same on Virtua Racing!

  • Loved the video. Course E was always my favorite, also had the best theme tune! :)

Can you let me know your settings for this under mame (assuming you use keboard or joypad)? I've tried this but the merest tap left or right sends my car hurtling across the road. I just want to be able to lightly tap left or right for the gentle corners :(

  • Good question! I don't have Mame to hand at the moment, since it wasn't long ago that I reinstalled Windows...but originally I took snapshots of the settings for the benefit of others. I know I also tried a few different settings, so these might not be the right ones. It's for use with a joypad. Give it a try. I can't find the other settings, sorry. Check the info up top, right.

  • Yay, those settings are fantastic!

Exactly what I was looking for!!!!

Thanks for getting back to me, I can see many hours of getting reaquainted with Power Drift ahead (and many annoyed looks from the girlie!)
