I have watched this film over and over ... and each time I discover something that I previously did not see, or understand. I thought this was all about Sean. I now know that Derek was pursuing Sean, hesitantly, even more than Sean was persuing Derek. Two boys, both wanting the same connection, yet fearful to admit it to themselves let alone each other. Love is love ... what is there to be afraid of ?
This is a film of subtleties. The gentle touches / caresses. The almost kiss - Derek says 'fuck' under his breath when Sean holds back. He is disappointed. The final running scene, Derek tells Sean It's OK. The "boy code" throughout. amazing.
The deaf guy was adorable and I want to know if the actor really is deaf because he played the part beautifully. Perfect script, perfect actors, perfect film. Thank you for sharing this with all of us. <3

I think in this intance if you'd gone with the cliche of (in this case) Sean kissing Derek, and then Derek sort of freaking out or whatever, then having the reconciliation at the end..? Maybe.

He is afriad to admit his emotions that he is in fact gay and into his friend... the long pause betwen them is another form of silence. The Mute actor is in fact living "with" sound b/c it is quite apparent that he wanted to kiss his friend. hope this helps.
@smithcutie I think the reasonthey didn't kiss is because sean could tell by the other boy's body language that the boy was hesitiant. he wanted it to be a mutual thing if the kiss had happened.
and i'm pretty sure that it's asl...i know the guy who played sean (the guy is actually hearing) and shad (the guy who played sean) is 100% american. i'm pretty sure that this was an all-american film.

I got his name wrong--it's 4ever with a 4. Finding deaf actors to audition isn't too hard, if you know where to look, such as Gallaudet, RIT, other colleges where there are programs for the Deaf. LOTS of untapped talent there!

Kind of like hearing people in general don't learn sign language to communicate with deaf people and expect deaf people to read lips, speak, etc. Probably reading too much into it.

i'm not deaf, but i love sign language, and while i love this short, i'm upset that there's close to no signing in this. i mean, except for the quick glimpses of the hearing aid and the sporadic signs, you can't tell that sean is deaf...in fact, everyone speaks to sean like he's kind of retarded...

Obviously, you are neither gay or deaf. This interpretation is severely close to reality. "I hate feeling this way" is a possible anthem to the angst of gay teenage youth. I am not some sad gay, but i can relate to the clusterfuck of emotions and action displayed in this film. "Rework it" does not qualify as constructive criticism.
