  • this song is great! i all so love the Cash version but tbh a song this well written is hard not to make it sound like a masterpiece

  • nin cant suck cuz nine inch nails made the song first you should not be so hatsy to make stupid comments like that it makes u look like a faggot wannabe

  • to go against all i will be there for you the one who reads this i will be there through the to the end

  • There can really only be one. Cash made a good effort, and the song was given a very rough edge by his passing. But Trent's original is so much more vulnerable and honest. It is totally unbelievable still to this day. It was a good thing that Nine Inch Nails quit in time, but they will be sorely missed.

  • I first heard/saw that song/clip about 15 yrs ago on "rage" (great Aussie music program) and it has kinda haunted me ever since(in a good way). Great song and great visuals to support it.

  • Awesome song. The only NIN song I like. (I actually prefer Cash's version, though)

  • I agree I like Cash's version he

has a lot more emotion when singing it. He makes you feel the song instead just raising the hair on your neck.

  • lol, so u don´t like music. right ?

  • Beautiful song, the vid does freak me out a bit tho

  • great song but IaAgree - freaky vid that makes you think

  • incredible. melodies, lyrics, the war footage projected, trent, fans... i cant describe how much this shakes me.

  • both versions are cool respect to the man in black but this is a nin song sry guys.

  • this is a sad song it makes me cry

  • @damnedsoul53,

me too. i think it's because we find so much truth about ourselves in this song. cheers

  • Eh! Who cares about Cash vs. NIN? Let's all be quiet and just look at yummy Trent. Damn he's hot! I'd like to do some very nasty things to that man!

  • Don't be a whore.

  • Respect em' both.

  • Hello I am NIN please respect evah other. But I remember everything. Ding Dong Ding Dong. hum hum What have I become, my sweetest friend hum hum everyone i know goes away in the end, la la la la and you can have it all, my empire of dire, i will let you down, I will make you hurt (OUCH) ladedala, oooh yaay, ding I wear this crown of poop, upon my something chair full of broken something i am still dont knowthe words, beneat the ...the feelings disaper you are someone else, im ..lalalalalal

  • Its a TOP Tune but The Man in Black Owns it ! Not trying to Offend anyone .

  • im offended

  • uh Trent Reznor wrote it originally and Johnny Cash covered it... So techniqually Trent owns the song.... But Johnny Cash's version is still awesome

  • im offended as well, cash simply covered it and didnt write a lick of that song

  • i like this but I love Johnny Cash'es virson. It is an amazing dong! Tho. I love it!

  • amazing WHAT ?

  • this is the original. Johnny covered it

  • Love It

  • dude I'm sure NIN is verry honnord that a legend like cash sang a song they wrote that meant so much to the band

  • the singer guy didnt like it in the begining, said he felt like someone kissed his girl, but after he hear cashs version and video, he liked it, and likes it still

  • Spiderlily21.. I completely agree. In an interview Trent also said that he had never listened to hes own version since.

Johnny and Trent both have strong relations to this song. They respect eah other for each of the songs.

They are both an amazing piece of art.

  • ummmmmm JC is dead

has been for a lil bit now so they respected eachother not respect eachother

oh and this version is far better to me anyway

  • ya dude when he wrote it, it just amazes me that he had cash sing it, cash didnt ruin it he just give it another tone, and you cant say it sucks because 21 milion people have viewed it, nin performed it better but just seeing cash do that is amazing

  • Stop whining you cunt.

  • theres more to music then range im not a fan of country music or anything but music can still be good if the singer has no range

  • McGritz.. Then you become a bigger legend than him if he is so terrible, make a better song, make a song that touches the very soul.. Other wise you are just saying a person is terrible while you are being even worse.

  • Trent is an amazing writer and did a great job you can tell the pain that he was feeling when he wrote it, you cant say cash destroyed it though. he mad it good in his own way. if you hear the cash version you know trent wrote it but you feel the pain in cash's voice. both are good songs and no one will ever be able to compare because they are very different songs.

  • bump+1

  • I only hate how everyone recognizes it as Cash's song. Cash really does make it his own though supplemented with Trent's great lyrics.

  • This is such an amazing song *shudder*

    man...

  • the guy from nine inch nails asked johnny cash to cover it

  • that's false, johnny listened to it and cover it coz he liked it, in fact you don't even know his name(Trent Reznor), so don't write about things you don't even understand

  • great song! (thats the concept,i say something nice and get on with my life =])

  • try being smart sludge. its much better than the dum dum you seem to be.

  • And, he still gave "The Slip" away for free. So even then he can't be that big of ass.

  • You're and idiot.

Reznor wrote Hurt and years later, Cash covered it.

Not trying to be dick but, do a bit of digging before you make a statement like that. Especially when around NIN fans.

Your asking for an ass-kicking when you call Trent a "cunt-head". At least in real life lol.

  • you have to admit he's a little bit of a cunthead

  • I'll ignore the gay bitch comment below because I don't know if it was directed at me.

And, no I don't. I think Trent is a musical genius. No one else can produce a sound like his. (At least with his older stuff). Can he be an Asshoole? Yes he can. And from what I hear he is good at it. But, is it really that big of a surprise that someone who has sold as much as he has, won as many awards, and go all that recigniton as he has, be an a bit of dick? No, it's not.

  • Fucking idiot, NIN wrote it first, what a fucking DUMBASS!

  • You sir, have just made yourself look like a moron.

  • Either you are intentionally trolling, or a complete fucktard.

Reznor wrote this song in the 90's. Cash did a wonderful cover of it about a decade later.

Morons like you ruin the internet.

  • Sorry i just "ruined" the internet with a comment. calm down you gay bitch

  • Oh no, not singlehandedly.

But you are clearly too stupid to be on here. Go die in a fire.

  • all in favor of sludgefactory dying in a fire BUMP!!!

    BUMP +1

  • you're a fucking dumbass. Trent Reznor wrote the original and Cash covered it. Shut the fuck up

  • Johnny Cash is GREAT. Both of these versions have different feelings but they are fantastic.

  • Cash covered this song...he didnt write it...it was all Reznor

  • ----*Irrelevant Reznor + Cash comparison*----

Love or hate it. They're both legends. Stop your bickering. Original or re made. Reznor wrote it. The end.

  • Why not hear Trents OWN view on Johnnys version!!!

Paste the following into search bar:- Johnny Cash - Hurt (Commentary by Trent Reznor)

  • Wow can we say Johnny Cash bandwagon!? Holy hell. I mean, his version isn't bad or anything but this is Trent's song and it will never have the same meaning in any other versio than Trent's. End of story

  • you are an idiot

  • God damn, I really wish Cash never covered this. His version is *okay*. I'm tired of people saying, "Cash's version is just as good, because he put his own meaning to it..." That's just ridiculous. He *covered* the song. Anyone who has experienced pain in their life can put their own meaning to it. The NIN version was the final song on The Downward Spiral, a compositional *masterpiece*. This is Trent's song, and Cash's version is, quite simply, a little boring.

  • are you seious this is shit

  • Where did all these Johnny Cash fans come from, anyways? Bandwagon hoppers. 7 years ago (something like that), Johnny Cash was an obscure country artist. Suddenly he became trendy when he covered modern songs by various artists, which was a brilliant move on his part. If you want a really good Cash cover, check out his cover of Soundgarden's Rusty Cage. He puts his own spin on it. As for Hurt, he took a song with feeling and made it incredibly boring.

  • Dude, you have got to be kidding. Trent said it himself that it wasn't his song anymore. He was moved to tears by Cash's version.

  • Mmhmm. I'll believe that when you give me more than your word on it. I really can't be expected to believe your claim without some sort of evidence.

  • i am just going by what i have heard but I believe that Renzor actually wrote the song for Cash. I remember hearing that when the song first came out a while ago. Correct me if I am wrong. And I completely agree with your statement lucianito

  • I dont think Trent minded Cash covering this song because (1) he had respect for Cash and (2) he knew that Cash truely understood the song, he knew how it was to actually feel the emotions expressed in it (having struggled with drug addiciton)

I think if anyone else had covered it it wouldn't have been as good because it would have felt as genuine.

Just incase you're wondering I love both versions.

  • johnny cash's version is waaay better!

  • Amen to appreciating both songs.

  • This song and video is amazing, everytime I watch it I go into a trance. Just brilliant!

  • theres no point in gettin mad over who wrote this. with a very little research you can find out for yourself johnny cash covered this song. both are good as fuck. if you dont like one.. well... beauty is in the eye of the beholder

  • I personally like Cash's version a little more, but this version definately has more emotion.

  • Classic.

  • I retract my previous comment. You're right, Johnny did cover it, my mistake. I guess it's just because johnny is so old you would think it would be the other way around.

  • emtgibson, this was not originally a Cash song.

  • Sigh, yes i appreciate Cash's cover of the song, but he totally made the world think he wrote it, when he didn't.....

  • yea this is def about H. Cash's version sounds like its about him being old

  • Swiggy loved this song...RIP my friend.

  • i first heard this by johnny cash years ago and loved it. didnt know it was a cover. hearing this one doesnt shake my love for Cash's rendition, but I must say i LOVE that piano part during the chorus. ha i jus like the chorus in general

  • I like Kermit the frog's version better. LOL, kidding...don't forget to tip ur waiter.

  • Even though NIN and Cash did the same song, same lyrics you can hear the different meanings. I think both songs are really good.

  • Veronique has smelly feet

  • The comments on this video are outrageous...Trent wrote this song "when he was in a very dark place". Johnny Cash's version is a jaded version and he actually tries to change the meaning. Trent was definitely addicted to H. And for anyone addicted, just quit cold turkey and take life by the ballz, I did

  • Wasn't addicted to heroin. Addicted to cocaine.

"the needle tears a hole" is not in reference to heroin.

  • i think both johnny cash and trent bring something great to the song. not quite sure why everyone is fighting over which is the better version. they are both amazing.

  • agreed! i love both versions i couldn't possibly choose!

  • well said i agree with you 100%

  • i live this song because it has so much feeling to it. you can almost feel the pain that is going on in his head & heart

  • fuckin cry asses

  • HERES THE BOTTOM LINE, Trent Reznor wrote and performed this song first and although johnny cash is cool and all his version is nowhere near as awesome as this one and just because you only ever heard johnny cashs version DOESNT MAKE YOU RIGHT WHEN U SAY HE WROTE IT

  • are you retarded? trent had to go through some intense rehab....YOU DONT GO TO REHAB UNLESS UR ADDICTED!

  • hahaha ur fuckin dumb. you go to rehab if you get caught with a gram of weed. standard procedure. you dont HAVE to be addicted to shit. im not sayin trent wasnt addicted. i dont know about that

  • you know what's funny ? TRENT REZNOR WASN'T EVEN ADDICTED TO HEROIN .

  • You're fucking dumb, Trent was addicted for a long time. Shut your god damn mouth and know what your talking about before you fuckin open it again.

  • i kinda prefer the original over cash's just because with nin u get that its about trent's heroin addiction, but with cash it sounds like insulin or high blood pressure... but cash it still awsome!

  • Legitimately made me lol.

  • what a dick thing to say about johnny cash. clearly when he sung his version it was about all the ups and downs throughout his life and career.

  • apologies, this is the original

  • this is alright, but it's a bit faint, Johnny cash was the better cover.

Also this is a cover also, the original song is by someone else, can't remember who.

  • your a retard, trent reznor wrote this song, its a NIN original

  • NIN nice, but Mr. Johnny Cash ROCKS.

  • Damn, he's tasty!

  • It is a shame that I cannot see what this "eaglescout" fellow had to say. I love analyzing weaker primates.

  • nin did a great job on wrighting the song but cash sings it way better he puts so much more soul into it

  • I agree!

And JC's vocal preformance is way better.

  • Bottom Line

NIN did an awesome job with the original

Johnny Cash did an awesome job with the cover

    Both are tremendous performances

  • Piss off guys this is art , jackass that came here complainning on this song have fucking no life ! By the way NIN rocks as well as for Johnny Cash but respect Trent for putting his guts and his soul in that song ! How dare you to spit on that! What a shame!

  • Piss off guys this is art , jackass that came here complainning on this song have fucking no life ! By the way NIN rocks as well as for Johnny Cash but respect Trent for putting his guts and his soul in that song ! How dare you to spit on that! What a shame!

  • Look, Nine Inch Nails and Johny Cash are both great artists who have made some genuinely soul stirring music in their own way. None is better than the other, thats a trivial argument. Cash obviously covered Hurt because it touched him in some way and he made it his own with that song. You have to respect both artists, stop arguing over trivial matters.

  • I love Cash's Version and this too. I can relate to this man better but I find Cash's version to be more musically intricate, these are just my preferences. And this is NIN-Hurt, Cash has 20 million views and plenty else, he doesnt need a page devoted to a debate he would never have wanted

  • TO EAGLESCOUT86, GET A LIFE!!!!! "Oh i cant respect this group blah blah blah" NIN did the song the way they wanted to do it plain and simple. Cash did it the way he wanted to do it and who ever else redid it. You say there a bunch of "talentless hacks" well all their songs are originals. So why dont you go back and listen to all those other groups that use somebody elses stuff cuz they cant come up with something by themselves and shut the fuck up!

  • Fascinating, writing this message must have cost you at least 10 seconds while listening to this amazing performance.

  • I could'nt have said it better,FUCK that pusshole!

  • amazing song... it puts me in my own little world and is my number one fav song ever... and since i am one of those fuckin fans murraycountycentral is talking about... i would like to say one thing to that little fuckin prick... fuck you get off the god damn site put a 12 guage in your mouth and pull the damn trigger... honestly if you dont like the shit... CHANGE SONGS... its that easy... you dont have to sit on you computer listing to it while you complain about it.... you really piss me off..

  • Yea if u dont like shit y listin to it you Dumb FUCK!!!

  • If it hadn't been for NIN there would of been no Johnny Cash version... So dunno how you could say that when without one there is no other! =)

  • BEAUTIFUL

  • If you dnt like the fkkn song dont listen dumbb fuckk!! ;) I love trent reznor<3

  • I like this song by nin, usually i can't hear any of the lyrics. Some of the lyircs are great, but i just can't make them out.

  • I have found a new band to love!

  • Probably the most powerful song ever, if not one of them.

  • Yeah, for somebody in the throws of loserdome.

If anything it epitomizes everything that centers around the self satisfactory behavior that causes strife and estrangement with those that are close to us.

  • Well, that's kind of obvious. He was addicted to heroin at the time of writing this. Sitting in a shitty hotel room, shooting up, nearly insane. His only connection to sanity being his music, knowing he's a failure and a weakling for succumbing to the drug, knowing its his own fault for driving everyone away, and that he'd give up all of the nothing that he had just to have someone back, even though he knows hell end up hurting them again. Its the vocalization of failure and helplessness.

  • One thing is absolutely undeniable.. "murraycountycentral" is a complete fvcking moron. He is someone who does not deserve the gift of life, and his opinion is not valued by anyone other than himself.

  • to all the haters

there is more emotion in this original

however i greatly love cash's version

enjoy both versions, Cash covered it because he also loved this version. sheesh.

  • Uh, Trent Reznor is a better vocalist than Johnny Cash...just saying for the person who begged to differ. That being said, Johnny Cash is awesome still. But let's keep it real.

  • wow you have no idea how much of and idiot you are

both of the versions are great, and trent's voice is one of the best in the world

and by the way, douche-bag, NIN wrote this song

  • Usually people who declare others of having differing sexual orientations are indefinitely hiding their own sexual insecurities.

So, who you callin' a faggot?

  • you, murraycountycentral, are a complete fucking idiot. Do your research before making such a blatantly stupid comment.

  • Of Cash's version: "different, but every bit as pure." - Trent Reznor

    Who am I to disagree?

  • cash's cover is way better

  • Damn! He is so yummy in this video...ahhhhh.

  • how can you say NIN's is better? half the people i talk to didnt even know it was origionally by them, they thought it was Cash's song.

  • gabe, just cuz u talk to ignorant people doesn't prove your point at all haha

  • Half the people you talk to are fucking ignorant. Doesnt mean that this version is any worse.

  • Both Versions are good.

But I love this song. <3

    Nine Inch Nails are Great.

  • Cash's version is better, but the nin version is the original. Reznor's girlfriend had just died, I believe, so both were very, very emotional.

All of you just shut up and enjoy the song.

  • Cash version is so much better. Johnny was really hurting when he recorded the song and his recording reflects that pain. Trent was sitting in a hotel room whacking off and feeling emo and lonely when he wrote the lyrics. Even Johnny's slight alterations of the lyrics ("Crown of thorns" instead of "Crown of shit") made the song more poignant. Besides, are you really going to compare Reznor's voice to Johnny Cash? Are you really?

  • but you realize trent reznor was the original creator of this song, and if you look at his face while he sings the song, you can know he is singing about something painful to him.

so shut up and stop pretending you know everything.

    the end.

  • Hey amateur musical historian, do you think only the original version of a song can be the definitive version? How many people have even heard "Big Mama" Thornton's version of "Hound Dog?" That's because Elvis' version blew it out of the water. Likewise, most people would agree, that the Beatles version of "Twist and Shout" is superior to the Isley Brothers original. I could give more examples but I'll just quote Franklin: It is better to appear a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt

  • And can we count the number of times covers of songs have been rubbish? Far more times, than successful covers.

The point is Trent Reznor *wrote* this song. Without Trent, there would be no song for Cash to cover. So give credit where credit is due

  • He is crying while performing the song, you douche. How much more emotional do you want him to get? Yeah, someone who uses someone else's words felt more "real" emotions.

  • fuck you. as far as im concerned, this is Johnny cash's song. if you dont think that Johnny cash didnt feel real emotion with this song, then you are THE stupidist person i have ever seen comment on youtube.

  • its his song..no ones version is better.

  • perfect

  • I like both versions. Why can't you appreciate both people? Anyway, check out my version

  • cash' version was so much better

  • no its not. his was boring. as deadyetfleshnbone says the original captures the message more than any remake

  • i think Cash's version is better, i'm a NIN fan too but Cash's hurt really gets to you

  • my boss and i were having a conversation about bob dylan and he mentioned bob dylan has some great songs, at least the ones he didnt sing. i disagree with this; if my opinion is as valid as any of yours, i think the original captures the message that the artist intended more so than any remake. when i heard cash's version i thought it was innapropriate and boring. very powerful song!

  • i agree

  • idk.. everyones got an opinion but it just seems indulgent to me. cash's is very raw.. doesnt need the glam to make it powerful. i gues i just dont get it. whatever.. guy still wrote a great song.

  • your an idiot

  • I like Johnny Cash's version better!

  • have you heard SEVENDUST's version? they are all very good, they all have their own feel to it. you should check it out.

  • no i haven't. but thanks a lot for the tip. I'm actually listening to Johnny Cash's version right now (I listen to it a lot). lol. I will definitely look them up. thanks again! :D

  • no i haven't. but thanks a lot for the tip. I'm actually listening to Johnny Cash's version right now (I listen to it a lot). lol. I will definitely look them up. thanks again! :D

  • Johnny Cash's verison's a million times better

  • i gotta say i like Sevendust's Acoustic version of this a lil better, but mad respect to Trent for writing this song

  • much respect to anyone who has battled back from drug adiiction and are clean! that's what respect is a clean body represents a clean mind, most of the time!

  • the johnny cash version and nine inch nails may have the same lyrics but they seem to be about completely different things.

  • NIN version is so good. I love johnny cash and think he did an amazing job, even trent reznor said he loved it in an interview. But this version is still so kick ass.

  • johnny cash version almost makes me wanna cry this version just makes me just think bout life

  • i love this song bowie does i prefure the vershion boiwe does whith them but still great song.
