mann we went to MN from CA one month earlier for July 4th 2007.. i remember crossing that brigde looking right over the Mississippi River.. it was a shock to hear about this.. and scary that we just cross it one month earlier before the collapse
i just finished watching a tv show called "Lost Tapes" on animal planet and it was about "MOTHMAN" a mysterious flying creature mostly spotted in Point Pleasant,WV or Ohio. Around 1957 a bridge collapsed there and 100s of people report seeing this MOTHMAN the day b4 the collapse. On 2007 dozens report seeing a black flying figure near a bridge a month b4 it collapsed........Aug 1, 2007 Minneapolis,Minnesota. ABOUT50yrs later A BRIDGE FELL WITH SAME ENCOUNTERS OF THIS CREATURE..WHAT COULDTHIS B
This happened on my birthday (Aug. 1) and I felt so horrible. My buddy works for a Emergency Medical Response team. He said about 30 cars at least fell with the bridge. He also told me that the bridge looked like it was weakly built. Ay yay yay.
I remember this day like it was yesterday. my father and I were driving to this restaurant and there are 36 ways to get there. There is only 1 way to get there that doesn't require you to take that bridge. My Aunt called while we were at a red light. we decided to pull into a parking lot to see what she wanted. She asked us if we wanted to go to dinner with her, so we picked her up. we would have been crossing that bridge had she not called. My Aunt saved 2 lives by making a single phone call.
It was thinner than federal regs said gusset plates caused the collaspe, a bridge built of the same design closed til a new is put up reason bent gusset plates and these meet the regs. I WANT ALL COMMENTS ABOUT THIS THAT CONSIDER "COOL" OR "AWESOME" TO BE INGORED PEOPLE DIED IN THIS I ALMOST LOST MY UNCLE, IF THE COLLASPE HAPPENED 2 MINUTES LATER WHILE HE WAS CROSSING HE WOULD'VE BEEN INJURED OR KILLED!
My condolences for almost losing your uncle in this tragedy. You must up until this day be almost very hurt. I hope the almost funeral wasn't to hard on you and your family.
Oh and Openbrains, check this out. Check out my 8/19/2007 flooding footage. CNN used that stuff but The Weather Channel blew it off. Several towns in SE MN wiped out by flash floods but they focused on Hurricane Dean, which did not even hit the United States. It's the media, it all depends on a hand full of people and who is working what shifts that decide what get's seen by billons of people each day around the world. Now that is the real power.
yeah well, I only shoot the news, I'm not producer :-) It's the media, it's always messed up. I talked to a lot of people that took off a few days after the bridge story to go cover the Utah mine story. If it bleeds, it leads...
Right . We have a very short attention span when it comes to news. Sometimes I think politicians take advantage of this problem by introducing diversarary news when a subject gets hot.
Dude, I've been busy. I run a video production company up here and busy dealing with all the Hurricane Katrina stuff. Go check out my other work. I would love to hear your comments about the flooding in New Orleans...
No, I just have the comments under approval on all of my new work to prevent the stupid "Check Out My Hot Body Web Cam" spam and racist stuff comments. Conspiracy thinking stuff is alright for debate and stuff. Me, I go with rust and 1960s design and money for repairs shifted to the stupid light rail projects.
Four of the eight lanes were shut down due to road construction so there was not that many people on the bridge and everyone avoids the road construction areas around here because traffic sucks, well it sucks all the time but it sucks 100 times worse. Rust, bad metal, age, and what about the drought? All you would need is for the foundation to shift an inch and it would bring it down since it was a span system.
The local TV stations has that footage from the south side where the fire and rescue were jumping in the water. I was not able to get in position until a half hour after it fell.
Last week, reports said that the investigation had found a possible design flaw in the steel gusset plates which bound the bridge's trusses together. Investigators were also taking a hard look at the construction that was being done on the Minneapolis Bridge when it collapsed. Last week, Secretary of Transportation cautioning them to carefully consider the extra weight placed on bridges similar to the I-35 W Bridge when they are undergoing repair or construction.
An interesting video is "I35w bridge collapse animation", and would love to hear a comment from an experienced civil engineer on this.
The closest I have seen to this bridge collapse is the highways in the San Francisco earthquake. I have seen no bridge collapse even remotely similar to this.
If they missed the rust damage 3 months prior, that would be a scandal on the inspection process. And the bridge only 40 years old. The Brooklyn Bridge was built like 1880.
But, also openbrains, as long as you want to debate this and post your side or for anyone else post their side, I will approve the comments. I just have the comments limited to do idiots that like to use hate speach or porn spam in the comments. Now there is your real terroroists, the spammers.
Thanks for your responses. There is a lot of interest in this bridge. 1 video with 212,000 comments had added comments blocked, and prior comments non-viewable. Unfortunately the conversation is at a nasty level.
Amazing statistic. With 44 cars in the river, only 13 dead and 100 injured.A school bus hanging from the bridge was removed. All 52 childdren survived. Some describe the noise and tremor like an earthquake, but no earthquake was reported.
It was fortunate that the bridge gave way on two ends simulataeously as it fell straight down, instead of breaking in the middle, saving lives. This bridge was in the way of building lite rail, and the new bridge will be built to support lite rail. Independent lawyers have been denied inspection, and those on the scene proposing alternative methods of immediate inspections have been imprisoned, considered jsut wanting to make a buck. The
Yes, lawyers were bared from the area for safety reasons since the danger to divers was so great the Navy was asked to come in to recover the remains that so many sick fu.ks around here wanted to get a closer look at. And the bridge did not all fall at once. South end fell then the north end a few seconds later as shown on the security tape. Bottom line, this was a "Maintance Issue" as already defined in several reports.
How did only 3-5 people die with 40-50 cars underwater? Is there an attempt to minimize the tradgedy? How many bodies did the Navy find. I understand that it was very dangerous duty considering the river flow. If the National Guard were not all in Iraq, there would have been a big call up. The videos i have seen is mostly civilians walking aimlessly around. Bring the National Guard and Army Reerve home. The emergency is over. (I was in the National Guard)

Oh, wrong, wrong wrong. I just said that most of the money goes to Iraq, and Bush votes ridicules money spent on the US whether its Katrina, or bridge examination. Why are people so sensitive. Lite rail is good, and tree hugging cant hurt. Brits have left Iraq because they said they are just making it worse. 80 billion more is requested

Well, one thing to consider before you make any conspiracy is this fact. In Minnesota, we like to joke that we have two weather seasons, Winter and Road Construction. In the winter for the last 40 years, salt and de-ice chemicals have been dumped on the bridge along with the rest of the roads and Salt eats metal.
